FREDERICK COATES, 0F CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR T0 FEDERAL PRODUCTS COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION'OF OHIO.
snmmn'ro PAPER WINDER.
Application filed Apri127, 1921. Serial No. 464,834.
T0 allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that FREDERICK CoA'rEs, a c tizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Semiauto Paper Winders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the manufacture of paper containers of the type commonly known as paper cans. l
More particularly the invention relates to a semi-automatic paper can body machine.
One important object of the invention is to improve and simplify the general construction of devices of this character.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a machine of this description having improved pneumatic means for holding the strip of paper while the same is being rolled. 1
'A third important. object of the invention is to provide, in a machine of this character,
means for positioning the end ofthe paper strip and for pressing the two'ends together after the can body has been formed.
A fourth important object is to provide a machine of this character having improved means for successively breaking the vacuum and ejecting the can body after formation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed. In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a detailed section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, the pressing and positioning means being thrown back and the view being on a reduced scale.
Figure 3 is a section similar to Figure 2 but taken on an enlarged scale and showing the positioning means brought forward.
In the construction of this invention there is provided a base 10 and extending upward from this base are bearing standards 11 and 12 wherein is revolvably mounted a shaft 13.
I This shaft 13 is driven by a clutch mechanism indicated in general at14'and whichis preferably the type of clutch mechanism lllustrated and described in my copending application filed the 27th day of April, 1921,
and bearing the Serial Number 464,831. The
22 facing the cylinder 16. The side of the head adjacent the cylinder is recessed to receive a rubber or other elastic 23, the pipe 20 extending entirely throughout the head and back as clearly shown in Figure 1. Connected to the sleeve 19 is a section pipe 24 and surrounding the pipe 20.js a channel 25 which communicates with the interior of said pipe 20 by ports 26. When the head 22 is in contact with the cylinder 16 the pipe 24 communicates with the channel 25 so that the pipe 26 forms an extension of the suction pipe. Extending upward from the base'lO is a bracket 27 to which is pivoted one end of the hand lever 28. This hand lever 28 is connected to a link 29 from which an arm 30 extends downwardly and is provided on its lower end with a shipper fork-31 engaging a grooved shipper collar 32 forming part of the head 22. Member 11 is extended upward of the bearing, and is provided on" its upper .end with a laterally extending arm'33 to which is pivoted the upper end of a shipper lever 34 engaging a channel 35 formed in an ejector head 36 mounted to slide longitudinally over the cylinder 16. Projecting from the lever 34 is a pin 37 which is received within a slot 38 formed in the link 29. Pro- ..jecting from the member 11 is an arm 39 provided with limit stop pins 40 between wh ch the shipper lever 34 may swing.
Extending upward from the base 10 is a bracket 41 to which is pivoted the angle of a bell crank lever 42. One arm of this lever extends outward towards. the front of the base 10 and is provided with a treadle 43. The other arm of this lever extends upward behind the cylinder 16 and is provided on its upper end with a presser plate 44 which, when the treadle 43 is pushed fully down,
v presser plate and bears against the upper part of the cylinder Secured to the central portion of the projecting through a suitable opening therein is a spring positioning finger 45. In order to normally hold the plate 44 and finger 45 away from the cylinder ends there is provided on the lever arm 42 a loop hole eye to which is connected the 7 upper end of a tension spring 47 having its lower ber of strips of paper or the like material the proper width and length and each having one end glued. The operator takes one of these strips and places it on the cylinder, the lever 28 having been moved to the right so as to produce a partial vacuum inset cylinder. At the time of positioning the paper strip S the treadle 43 is depressed until the finger 45 engages the cylinder 16. Thus the strip S will lie over the openings 17 and will be held firmly in position by the action of the partial-vacuum in the cylinder 16. The operator may then let go of this strip. The operator now grasps the lever 15 with her action of the clutch 14; shaft 13 and cylinder 16 will now revolve. Under these conditions the strip S will force the spring finger 45 upward and the strip will be caused to go around with the said ends to firmly stick together. Next, the
operator grasps the lever 28 with her left hand and moves the same to the left. The first form of this movement of the lever 28 45 assume shown in Figure 2 and are thus communication with entirely out of the way of the movement of head 36.
There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the ma terial principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is Wished to includeall such as properly come Within the scope claimed. are provided, each of the strips being out to Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
