GEORGE POMINVILLE, OF ST. HYACINTHE, QUEBEC, CANADA.
ELECTRIC WATER HEATER.
Application filed September 1, 1920. Serial No. 407,292.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, inonsn PoMiNvILLn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at St. Hyacinthe, in the Province of Quebec, Canada. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric lVater Heaters; and I do hereby declare that the following a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to electric heaters and more particularly to a heater of this character which may be used in connection with hot water heating systems. An
object of the present invention is to produce an electric heater which may be easily and readily applied within the hot water system, or which may be applied. to the individual radiators having water therein to be heated.
A further object of the invention is to prmxide a device adapted for connection to any type of domestic or commercial water reservoirs or tanks, and which is capable of relatively instantaneously heating the water in the reservoir.
lVith the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the descrip tion continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an elevational view of a water tank. illustrating the application of my in vention thereto;
Figure 2 is a magnified view of the device detached from the tank;
Figure 8 is a horizontal section of the device;
Figure 4- is a plan view of the inner sur face of the resistance holding plate and outer cover plate; with the circuit wires schematically illustrated; and,
Figure 5 is an end elevational view of the same.
This invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following de-- tailed description wherein like and corre-- sponding parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the several views.
The numeral 1 designates the reservoir or tank of any desirable construction, which sconnected to the water supply pipe 2, by the pipe and three way fitting 4. Likes wise a pipe 5 leads from the top of said reservoir 1 and is connected by the elbow fitting 6 to an outlet pipe 7. A pipe 8 is connected to one branch of the three way fitting 41 and carries on its opposite end the three way fitting 9. A. similar'three way fitting is connected to the outlet pipe 7.
Two vertical pipes 11 and 12 have their lower and upper ends connected to fittings 9 and 10 respectively, and at their inner ends these pipes 11 and 12 take into interiorly threaded openings in the enlargements 13 and 14; formed on the annular casing Or housing 15. This housing 15 is hollow and formed with a marginal flange 16, the latter being provided with a plurality of openings 17. The casing or housing 15 is provided with a cover plate 18, likewise formed with an annular flange 19 corresponding to the flange 16 of the casing, and flange l9 is formed with openings 20, which are in alignment with the openings 17 which receive suitable fastening elements.
An annular plate 21 is interposed between the cover plate 18 and the casing 15, being formed with an angularly disposed flanged portion 22 which seats on the shoulder portion 23 of the casing whereby the said plate 21 is supported thereon.
Plate 21 is of any desired construction and at its central part is formed with an opening, the walls of which are beveled outwardly, forming a seat 24;. This opening or seat 24: registers with a relatively large opening 25 formed in the enlargement 26 of the cover plate 18. Opening 25 is interiorly threaded for the threaded portion 27 of the positive contact plug 28. Plug 28 at one end is formed with a tapered portion 29 which is adapted at its enlarged portion 30 to take into the seat 2 1. This plug 28 is formed at its central part with an opening adapted for the pin 31, which carries on its outer end a knurled head 32.
A plurality of porcelain insulating members 33 are secured to the inner surface of the plate 21 by means of the screws 34:.
A terminal screw 35 is mounted in the annular enlargement 36 of the cover plate I 18 and a similar screw 37 is secured to the inner face of the plate 21, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
Two resistance elements 38 and 39, com
prising-coils oil: wire of iielativeh hiy lgi re sistance are attached at their opposite ends to the pin ill of plu E28 and to screw 37. These resistanee wiress38 end 39 pass around the porcelain insulating members 52%.
A circuit wire 4:0 is appro 'iat connected to the outer end of plug; pin 31 and a similar wire 4:1. is secured to the annular enlargement 36 of the cover plate 18.
These wires it) and ll lead from the source of electrical supply, and as the resistance elements 38 a'nd Z-BS are grounded on the s row '37. and wire ll is in electrical connection with the cover plate 18 through screw 35, a complete circuit-is provided as illustrated in Figure 4;.
These resistance-elements 3S and 39 by their novel location on the inner surface of plate 21 are disposed within the casing and are in direct contact with the water to be heatedand by the peculiar arrangement of the same, arein series to the lines 42 and 43, but are in parallel with each other.
The cover plate 18 is detaehahly connected to the casing 14, loy the bolts A, and ahollow cap member 45 is provided with aninteriorly threaded portion adapted for con nection with the threaded portion otthe enlargeinent 26 of cover platelS. This cap member 455 is "formed with a central openii'igg 41-6 through which passes the lead wire 40 connected to the plug pin 1;;
The electric current passes troni line -42, throng-h wire 4-0 and pin 31 to the resistance element 38. Likewise resistance element 39 is energized and both elements are grounded with the screw 37.
15, they will become heated and thus in turn Tlhie heated water and ill will heat the water. passes upwardly through pipes 12 7 into the tank 1 and when drawn oft w pass out through pipe 7.
Having-thus fully dcscri ed the invention, what 1' claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:--
The combination v- 'th a water tank and pipe connections therefor, of en electric heater attached to said pipe connections, and comprising; a hollow casing and corer therefor a contact plate arranged. in said casing and held in position by the cover oi; the casing, resistance elements mounted on said plate, said resistance elements having; direct contact with the wate in said. casf said plate having; an opening; therein, the said cover having; an opening thereii. a plug within the opening); and connected with the resistance elements and means for attaching current conductors to the plug.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
