WORDOMETER;
Application filed May 2,
19/307,? it may concern:
it known that I, Ansnt R. KAY, a citi' of the United States, residing in the citv and county oi Denver and State of C0101 do, ha ve invented certain new and usei'ul improrements in a vvordometer; and I do herebv declare the following to be a full, clesi.',-: l exact description of the invention, such i. will enable others skilled in the art to which it EEPPOItz'liDS to make and use the same,
The ohjeet of the invention is to provide a wordometer or word registering device for use in connection with typewriting machines as means of keeping account of r of words for the purpose of t ,1 the basis of charges for work, as hv a public stenographer or for the in i1 ion oi QIUPlOyQIS as a means of de lug the relative values or degrees of and industry oit G'BiplOYQQS and the iturthermore to provdie for this device which may readily be a plied to a typewriting machine oi any of the ordinz y or commercial types either as a par; oi? the machine or an attachment thereto; and, also to pro in this connect on :1 cc icc which will not interfere in z. N ay with the usual operation of the ring; machine, will not require any e). .re. effort or movement upon the part of the operator in order that the word counting (lOViCC may be actuated, which will not intcr'lere with the use of the usual spacing bar or other devices when the counting mechanism is not reouired, and which may readily be di cmmected"when work not rea record beingdone; and with and related objects in view the inlion co tion and re tion' ot parts ot wh ch a preferred embodiment is shown in the accomdrawing. wherein:
l is a plan view oi an apparatus he invention apiilicil in the op erzu'ire position to the base ot a typewriting Figure 5 is a similar view of the rock shaft.
sts in a construction, combina- 1921 Serial N0. 466.294.
The device consists essentially of a countcr-bar adapted to be arranged upon the space bar 11 of the typewriting machine or quired which does not call for the use of the counter or measuring device; in connection with a counter 12 which is adapted to keep an accurate, record of the number of operations of the counter bar.
Any suitable or preferred construction of counter, many of which are now on the market may we utilized, the type indicated having a plurality of disks arranged so that motion may be communicated from one to the other to provide for registering unit-s, tens, hundreds, thousands, etc. Motion is communicated to the spindle 13 otthe counter by means of a rockshaft 14 which when the device is to be applied as an attachment to a typewriting machine may be mounted upon a base 16 consisting of a bar held to the base of the machine screws 17 or the equivalent thereof.- This rock shaft is connected with a spindle of the counter by means of a coupling 18 provided with a counter lever by which a relative adjustment ot' the counter-spindle with regard to the rock shaft may be effected, to the end that a full stroke II'IO'VQIHGDh of the counter bar will efliect a full stroke registering movement of the cminter. I
The rock shaft is provided with a terminally free crank arm 20 at the end opposite to the counter, and the counter bar in the construction illust ated is in the term o a saddle adapted to straddle the space bar oi the typewriting machine with a depending arm 21 provided at its lower end with an eve 22 for the reception of the ex tremity of said crank.
is illustrated, the counter bar being of the saddle form adapted to rest upon the space bar and being readily removable therefrom when the counter mechanism is not required, said counter bar is adapted to be supported by thespace bar and to be elevated thereby after the counter bar has been i.or opera ii the ting noted he operated indepei' i it is 11 :e Witho 5 A of 5 lnent thereof and hem inarock pevri'itin eni sin ,th the connte e space h 6 provided i necte-l with and h a cenntei' her ati'veiy co ed with said ci'ank.
