IMPROVEMENT IN GRAIN-SAMPLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,953, dated October Q8, 1873; application filed September 10, 1873.

Be it known that I, JAMEs J. Bois, of Rantoul, Champaign county, Illinois, have invented, made, and applied to use a new and useful Sampler for Sampling Grain; and that the following is a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my grain-sampler. Fig. 2 is a front View of the same. Fig. 3 is a side sectipnal view of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional view through line 1 2 of Fig. 3 of the drawing.
In the drawings, like parts ofthe invention are designated by the same letters of reference.
The nature of the present invention consists in the construction, as more fully hereinafter set forth, of an improved device for sampling or testing grain, more particularly corn; the object of the invention being the production of a device for such purpose which shall be aiforded at a low cost, and shall be simple and direct in its operation.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will describe the same.
A shows a triangular-shaped receptacle for the grain or corn, formed of tin or any suitable metal, and divided into a series of compartments by means of the division-plates a. This receptacle A is provided with the point C, and flanges e, and lip c. Over the flanges ethe lipped portions cl of the cover B are passed, while beneath the lip c the lower end of the cover B is received. B shows the cover, formed of tin or any suitable metal, intended to be passed over the receptacle A, being provided with the lipped portions d, sliding over the flanges e. The cover B is also provided with the projecting plate b and handle b. VThe re ceptacle A is provided with the handle a.
Such being the construction, the operation may be thus explained: The sampler is inserted into a sack of grain, (the point C and projecting plate b assisting materially the insertion of the sampler,) and having been inserted to its full extent, the cover B is then elevated, and the grain enters and iills the compartments of the receptacle A. After the compartments are filled the cover B is closed upon thereceptacle A by thrusting it down, and the sampler is then withdrawn from the sack of grain, and on opening the lid or cover the quality of the grain contained in the sack is ascertained by an examination of the grain contained in the In presence of- W.
