Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 26, 1909.
Serial No. 514,794.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN D. WVILLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waurika, in the county of Jefferson and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Grocers Measure, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to adjustable meas ures, and is designed for the purpose of facilitating the speed in which staple groceries, such as sugars, coffee, rice, etc., are handled and measured.
It contemplates the construction of a de vice of this type and character which, through the instrumentality of a graduate thereon, provides a means whereby the same may be adjusted to various measures andweights of the above named articles and which will further eliminate all waste caused by overweight and careless handling.
With the above and other ends in view this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter fully described, specifically claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein,

Reference being had to the drawing, 1 indicates, in general, a stand constructed for my improved measure, which may be of any suitable construction, but as shown in the drawings, comprises a frame of converging supports 2, having at their upper extremities a rectangularly formed frame 3, and at their lower extremities the transverse braces 4:. The rectangular frame 3 is supported by the member 2 a suflicient distance from the base upon which the same rests to permit the insertion of the receptacle, the delivery spout and also the reciprocation of the adjustable measuring mechanism.
In the frame 3 there is rigidly secured a similarly constructed frame 5, having the inner edges of its upper extremity tapering as shown at 6 in Fig. 2. A hopper or reservoir 7 is secured to the upper extremities of these frames 3 and 5, the same resting flush, having its sides tapering to form a continuation of the tapering edges 6 of the inner frame 5. This hopper or reservoir 7, may be of any size suitable to the frame, and is secured to the rectangular frames 5 and 3 by the lip or flange 8, formed adjacent the outlet which is firmly secured to the frames by any suitable means. Carried by the lower side of the inner frame 5, in such a position that it continues the opening 9 therein, is a rectangular tube 10 provided upon its inner face with the graduations 11, which regulates the amount of material measured by the device. Slidably carried upon this rectangularly formed tube 10 is a similar tube 13 having its lower extremity converging to form a delivery spout 14, and its upper extremity so constructed that the same will form an indicator for the graduations 11. The lower tube 13 has a rectangular frame 15, forming a transverse brace for the tube 13, and a means whereby the slotted guides 12 of the same, may be attached thereto. These guides 12 are secured to each side of the frame 15 and have their upper extremities slotted at 16 to provide for the reception of the thumb screws 17 carried upon the adjacent sides of the upper frame 5. In combination, these guides 12 and the thumb screws 17 supply a means whereby the slidable tube 13, carrying the frame 15, may be held in any desired position in relation to the hopper and upper frame 5.
The frames 5 and 15, each have a transverse passage piercing the sides thereof adjacent the slotted guides 12, and presenting the slots 18 in the forward faces of the frames, for the reception of the gate indicated in general, as A. These gates comprise a sheet metal slide 19, bearing at one terminal against the opposite face of the frame, and secured at the other to the handle 20, said handle carrying at each side thereof, a pair of arms 21 adapted to be received in the transverse passages located in the frames, adjacent the slotted guides 12. These arms are bent laterally to form the steps 22 at the outer extremities, and in this manner prevent the handle 20 and the slide 19 from being entirely removed from the frame, consequently, allowing a certain freedom in the operation of the measure.
From the foregoing it will be understood, that, grain, or in fact, any material of this type, may be placed in the hopper 7, the gates carried by the frames 5 and 15 being Patented Apr. 4:, 1911.
retained in a' closed position, thus permitting none of the contents of the hopper, to pass into the tubes and 13. The distance or space between the gates is then adjusted through the medium of the slidable tubes 10 and with the aid of the graduate carried on the forward face of the tube 10, to the desired measure or weight, the upper gate 19 is opened, allowing the material contained in the hopper, to pass through and fill the chamber B, between the gates after which it is then closed shutting off the flow of the substance, and allowing the same to be exactly measured thereby. The lower gate is opened to permit the contents of the chamber 13 to pass out of the delivery spout 14: into any suitable receptacle disposed thereunder, the gate being closed after the passage thereof, placing the device in condition for again measuring a like amount of the material.
To place the device into practical use, a plurality of the same, may be placed upon any suitable platform, thus making it posbeans, rice, coffee, etc., as may be required by the customer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent is The combination of a support, a hopper thereon, a tube depending from the hopper having slots in its front and passages in its sides, valves sliding through said slots, handles on the valves adapted to bear against the front of the tube, and guides secured to the valves and extending through the passages in the sides of tube and provided at their rear ends with stops to engage the rear of the tube.
