insaisis- GRAPPLING TOOL.
Application filed ctoloer 25,1921. Serial Ic. 510,201.
This invention relates to a tool for remov-4 ing objects from wells and the like, the principal object of the invention being to provide a pair of jaw members for gripping the object, with means for causing the jaws to.
engage the object when a releasing member is moved by the object to a position where it will permit the jaws to close.
Another object of the invention is to provide spring means for securing the releasing member to the body of the device, so that said member may be placed in a position holding the jaws apart or in a position away from the aws which will permit them to close on the object.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement ofthe several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated inthe accompanying drawings and specifically pointed v out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will bel had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or correspoding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the jaws as engaging the object.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the lower ends of the aws with the spreading member in position. l
Figure 4 is a section on line lc- 4lof Figure 3.
Figure 5`is a view showing a modified form of spreading member.
Figure 6 is a view showing another form of spreading member.
In these figures 1 indicates 4a stem which is adapted to be connected with piping or a cable in order that it may be lowered into a well. A pair of jaws 2 are connected to the Vlower end of this stem, these jaws being shown as metal strips with their upper ends' riveted or bolted to the stem and their lower known toggle lever effect.
ends being rounded and flanged to form opposing jaw faces 2. These jaws are adapted to be held in spreaded conditionby a member 3, which is shown in Figures l to las being in the form of a pin, the eye of which is engaged by the lower end of a flexible member el, the upper end of which is connected to spring 5 which in turn is connected to a staple at the lower end of the stem by a flexible member 6. This spring will permit the member 3 to be placed be'- tween the lower ends of the jaws to spread said jaws apart and in this position the spring will be in expanded form so that if the spreading member is struck, as by the object to be removed from the well, the spring will jerk said member upwardlyI from between the jaws and said jaws will thus come together and grip the object, so.
that it can be removed from thewell with kthe device.
The pin is placed in position spreading the jaws apart, before the device is lowered in `the well.
Figure 5 shows a pin having `a screw threaded socket to receive a bolt '7 so that the pin is adjustable as to length. This pin can be nsed to make the device fit .varying sizes of wells.
Figure G shows another form of spreading device. This view shows a 'pair of members S connected together at their abutting ends by the connecting means and having the well IVhen this device is engaged by the object the members will move together and then they will be jerked upwardly by the spring. i
`While this device can be used for removing objects from all kinds of wells it is especially designed to raise loose valves from Red `jacket pumps as shown in the drawings.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire itto be understood that I may make changes in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, providedv that such changes fall within the `scope of spreading member for the jaws adapted to j be moved from between the jaws by an object in the Well and spring means for moving the member into inoperative position.
2. lA device of the'class described comprising a stem, spring strips connected with thev same for forming a pair of jaws, a pin for spreading the jaws apart and a spring connecting the pin with the stem.
3. A device of the class described comprising a stem, spring strips connected with the stem and forming jaws, a member 'for holding the jaws apart, means for adjusting the member and spring means for connecting the member with a part of the stem.
In testimony whereof Iy affix my signature. l5
