Be it known that l, ELMOND C. IMMEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lee ray, in the county oi Stephens and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slip Sockets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This inventionrelates to slip sockets and has for its object to provide a device oi this character whereby the sucker rod, used in well drilling, may be readily withdrawn.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this character wherein the parts may be readily disassembled without destroying their etliciency. I 7
It is another object of the invention to provide a slip socket of this character where in chuck jaws are used to grip the sucker rod, said chuck jaws being urged outwardly of the body member or socket by a spring so as to cause the jaws to substantially contract and grip the sucker rod.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device of this character wherein the spring used to urge the chuck jaws into engagement with the sucker rod may be readily compressed to permit ready removal of the chuck jaws.
It is a still further object oi? the invention to provide a slip socket of this character wherein a plurality of chuck jaws are used and are retained within the socket by means of a cap, disengagement of the jaws from the cap being prevented by the spring.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to bezhereinafter more particularly described, fully claimed and illustrated in the'accompanying drawings in which:

Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a body member having its end 6 reduced and formed into a threaded stem for connection to any suitable implement. The intermediateand opposite end portion 8 of the body member is provided with a bore 9, opposed slots 10 beingprovided in the side walls of the body member and adapted to communicats with the bore 9. It will be noted that the inner surface ofthe end 8 of the body member gradually inclines from the intermediate portion of the body member to the extremity ofthe end 8 to substantially form a cone, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. A supplemental bore 11 is provided in the closed end of the body member, said bore being threaded.
A spring 12 is mounted within the bore 9 and is adaptedto engage the end wall 13 of .the bore, said spring being greater in diameter than the diameter of the bore 11, so as to surround the edges of said bore. The oppo- I site end of the spring is adapted to receive a supporting member 1d, including an eXten sion 15 which is adapted to be disposed with in the end of the spring, the member 14 rest ing upon the end coil of the spring. This member as well as the extension 15 is provided with an opening 16 which is greater in diameter than the bore 11, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
In order to permit a broken rod to be withdrawn from the bore of the well, there is provided a novel mechanism embodying a cap 17 having a flange 18 and an opening 19.

one end ofeach slot communicating with the .opening 19. The supporting member 14 isl adapted to be disposed within the cap, the opening 19 being considerably larger than the bore 16 so that a socket 21 is formed through the cooperation of the supporting member 14: and the cap, for the reception of a washer '22. In connection with the cap 17 a plurality of chuck jaws 23 are employed, each jawbeing substantially segmental in cross section and having its concave face 2% provided with teeth, while its convex face 25 is tapered to conform to the cone shaped end of the bore 9, said tapered portion terminating adjacent the end 26 of the jaw. Formed integral with, and projecting from the end 26 of each jaw is a shank 27, said shank being considerably longer than the jaw, and having its end portion 28 provided with a .air of opposed recesses 29, said recesses bedisposed inwardly oi the extremity of said end portion, the shanks 97 being resilient so as to respond to the movement of the jaws outwardly of the socket member and permit said jaws to firmly clamp the sucker rod.
In assembling the device, the spring 19. is disposed in engagementwith the end 13 and over the supplemental bore 11. lhe supporting member 'l-l is then positioned uponthe opposite end of the spring. The cap 17 is disposed within the bore 9 witi t 1.6 flange 17 extending toward the wall 13. The chuck jaws 23 are then placed withi" the bore so as to permit the end portions 28 of the shanks 2? to pass through the opening 19 of the cap and permit the reduced portions of said ends formed by the recesses 29 to pass into the slots 20. The member 1% is then per mitted to move into the cap so to close the open ends of the slots and lock the end portions 28 oi the shanks to the cap, the expansion oi' the spring causing the jaw members 23 to move through tne cone shaped portion of the bore 9 so as to substantially contract said members and cause the same to grip the desired object.
It is of course obvious that 'm assembling and disassembling the device the spir g w l be prevented from expanding. This is accomplished by means or a screw 80 having athreaded shank 31, a flange 32 being formed on one end, and a substantially rectangular head 33 formed above the flange. This screw is adapted to be passed through the chuck jaws 23,.the opening 19, and the washer 22, as well as through the bore 16 of the holding member, and into the supplemental bore 11. A suitable wrench 3c is provided, said wrench being adapted to extend tl'n'ough the jaw members 23 so as to engage the head 38 of the screw. Upon rotation of the wrench, the screw will be moved into the bore 11 so as to cause the flange 32 to engage the washer 22. The rotation Or the screw will cause the holding member 14-, together with the spring, to be moved toward the end wall 13, thereby relieving the cap 17 of pressure, as well as opening the slots 20 to permit removal or release of the end portions 28 of the shanks.
It is of course obvious that after the member ll is withdrawn from the cap 17, the jaws 25. may be readily removed from the socket by passing the same through the slots 10, it being also possible to remove the cap in the same manner. After the various parts of the device have been assembled as above described, the wrench 34- is used to withdraw the screw 30 so as to permit the spring to expand and cause the member 1a to engage the cap 17 and urge the aw members 23 to-- ward the end S of the body member.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that this invention provides a novel form of slip socket, so constructed that the parts may be readily assembled and disassembled with ease, and wherein a double resilient function is obtained through the cooperation of the shanks 27' of the chuck jaws and the spring 12, and when a sucker rod is once inserted in the bore 9, accidental disengagement is impossible.

1, A slip socket of the character described comprising a body member, a spring disposed in said body member, a supporting member carried by the sp ing, a cap engaged with the supporting member, said cap having an opening in its central portion and slots communicating with said opening, and chuck jaws including shanks, said shanks being disposed in the slots of the cap, said chuck jaws and shanks being secured and urged toward one end of the body member through the cooperation of the holding member and the cap.
2. A slip socket of the character described comprising a body member, a spring disposed in said body member, a supporting member carried by the spring, a cap engaged with the supporting member, said cap having an opening in its central portion and slots comn'iunicating with said opening, and chuck jaws including shanks, said shanks being disposed in the slots of the cap, said holding member being adapted to extend into the cap to lock the shanks within the slots.
