To all w ham it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARoLn H. DE Moss, a citizen of the United States, residing at (.llarksburg, in the county of Harrison and State of Nest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail Ties, oi which the following isa specification. a 1 i This invention relates to improvements in 1G an improved rail tie foruse in laying temporary tracks in mines. In laying such tracks it has heretofore been the custom to employ ties having spaced upstanding memat their ends against and beneath one of which the rail is disposed, at one side, a wooden :wedge being driven between the rail and the other said member so as to bind and clamp the rail to its seat. However the preparation of these wedges requires considcrable time and labor and their 'useis gen. erally unsatisfactory. On the other hand it undesirable to employ rails embodying rail clamping members which require to be secured in place by bolts and nuts as too much time is consumed in assembling and laying the track. Therefore it is the primary object of the present invention to provide a rail tie for use in a temporary track structiu'e which tie will be simple and substantial in structure, will be adapted to securely clamp the rail base without the employment of wooden or other wedges as is now customary and will be adapted to have sembled and disassembled thus permitting oi? the track being laid or taken up in a short space of time.
Where wooden wedges are employed as members are secured in place by bolts and nuts, wedges of a certain size and shape must be produced in large numbers and because of their nature they soon become so damaged or mutilated as to become unfit for further use. The employment of bolts and nuts is an expensive proposition where they require to be frequently removed and replaced the threads soon become worn, and also difficulty often experienced in removing the bolts it they have become rusted. Therefore the inventionhas a further and equally important object to provide a rail tie ot the class referred to embodying a rail clamping member adapted to be secured in metallic rail ties and more particularly to its component parts readily and quickly as-.

While the tie embodying the invention may be employed as a permanent rail tie or in other words as a component part oi a per manen't track, it is prin'iarily designed for use in constructing a temporary traclnthe tie being)? indicated in general in the drawings by the numeral 1 and the rails by the numeral The tie 1 comprises a body which is indicated by the numeral 3 and is preferably of channel iron construction, embody a supporting top portion and depending longitudinal flanges 5 designed to rest upon or seatin the temporary road bed. yin o will also be evident that the member 10 is more or less resilient and that a sutlicicntclearance is left the point where the bend in the lip 12 engages about the end of the supporting top portion 4 of the tie body and the edge of the rail base flange, to permit ot the loiigitudinal'displacement of the member in an inwarddirection to an extent to insure of proper wedging engagement of the lip 12 with the base flange of the rail.
