FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, GERMANY.
Application filed June 28, 1920. Serial mi eeaaee.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known. that I, CLAnmUs DORNlER, a. citizen of the German Empire, residing at; Friedrichshafen, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flying Boats (for which I have filed application in Germany, November. 18, .1919), of which the following is a specification My invention refers tr flying machines and more'especially to .iying boats. Its
particular object is an improved arrange-;
ment of the motor and the supporting planes relatively to the boat hull in special'connection with crafthaving one or a plurality of traction propellers.
Hitherto the type of hydroplanes, called flying boats, was almost uneXceptiona-lly provided with driving propellers and hence with raised -motors, being generally con-1 structed as a double deck aeroplane. A construction of this kind Iembodies manifold and serious disadvantages. Above all, the
center of gravity of the craft is located rather high, While the motors are only'accessible withv great difiiculty.
The present invention aims at obviating these drawbacks, by thepropeller being ar ranged at the bow, in such wise that the dis-. tance' between the water and the'circle described by the propeller will beas slight as admissible. To this end, the propeller is either directly or indirectly driven by a inotor or a motor plant, which is disposed close to the bow on low structures or imme diately on the, boat. j A substantially self supporting wing is inountedimmediately on the deck. However, if desired. the said 'wing may in addition be supported by means of struts directly connecting it. with the boat. or by aid of side floats. A construction of the kind described will go to form a boathaving. a very favorable low lying total center of gravity and hence possessing great stability both in the air as also on the water.
Beyond this, the resistance to the air is, in v the present case, considerably reduced in comparison to the known constructions,
- while the motors or the like, are rendered far more easily accessible than heretofore.
I' wish it to be understood that my invention is by no means restricted to flying boats and hydroplanesin generalhaving butasingle tractionpropeller. It may equally be adapted to'cr'aft provided with two floats and one traction propeller arranged on each,
float, and the number ofwihgs may likewise be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention. And though the invention'has been described above as applied to a" single deck hydroplane, additional suplevel 4. The supporting plane 5 is situated directly on the deck, leaving a space 6 free for the driver between the motor and its front edge. The boat- 1 is fitted out with lateral openings 7 in the shape of doors and windows, its end being provided in the 'custo'mary manner with a rudder and fins 8.
I claim I v A flying boat comprisingin combination, a stepped float-less boats hull, a motor disposed directly on the foremost part of said bull and 'a traction propeller adapted to be driven by said motor and extending, when. in verticah position, almost down to the level of the load water line, a self supporting plane extending close to the rear of said motor across said hull in contact with its upper deck, a pilots seat between said motor and rsaid plane and accommodation for the variable load in said hull underneath said plane.
In testimony whereof I- afiix my signature.
CLAUDIUS nonrunn.
