Description

Patented lll/lee. l2,
is www nevica;
WILLIAM HEDRIGH AND JOHN LENDIEMAN, OF TROCHU, ALBERTA, CANADA.
DRAG.
Application filed January 8, 1921.
To @ZZ a0/Om it may concern Re it lrnewn that we. WILLIAM l'l'nnnioi-i, a citizen oit the United States, and donn inname-m, a. citizen or' Canada. both residing at Trochu, in the Province oi1 `Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Drags7 or which the 'following is a speci iication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. l
This invention relates to certain improvements in drags, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device ot this general character which can be employed to` advantage in packing and leveling the soil.
Another object or the invention is to provide a device oi' this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same operates to pack the soil smoothand tight without dragging the soil and which can be employed to advantage in packing the soil in hollows.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device or this general character which operates eiectively to break the land where there are thistles or stubbles and which treats the land;` whereby7 the possibility of drifting is sub stantially eliminated.
The invention consists in the details or construction. and in the combination and `arrangement ot the severalparts et our improved drag whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use` as will be hereinafter more i'ully set forth.
The novel features of our invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawingsq wherein:
Figure l is a view in top plan of a drag constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of the device as illustrated in Figure l., with portions broken away, and
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure l.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings our improved device comprises two side or end runners l of? desired dimensions and which maintained in desired spaced.
Serial No. 435,923.
relation by an elongated beam or rigid me1n ber 2. The end portions of the beam or member 2 rest upon the upper end portions of the runners l adjacent the rear ends thereof and are secured thereto by the bolts 3 `or the like. lt is preferred that each of the bolts 3 be inserted through a runner l trom below and the opening or bore 'et through which said bolt Sis directed has its lower portion enlarged, as at c, so that the head b oit the bolt is housed within the runner so that said bolt yoffers no obstruce tion to the ground engaging or working edge ot the runner.
The beam or member 2 at substantially its longitudinal center also has arranged thereon a seat structure S. The. forward end portions of the runners 1 are connected by a bar or rod 5 which serves as a pivot or tulcrum common to all ot the intermediate runners or `slides 6.
rlhe runners or slides t3 are interposed between the'runners l and substantially till the space between said runners l and each ci the runners or slides 6v is capable of independent swinging movement in a vertical direct-ion. As is clearly illustrated in Figure ofthe drawing, yit is to be noted that the runners l are of a height greater than the height of the runners orslides 6. The forward end portion ot each oi' the runners or slides 6' is provided with an {opening` 7 through which the bar or rod 5 isireely directed and whereby said runner orslide ti is supported for desiredy swinging moveniient. The contiguous runners or slides 6 are also closely adjacent to each other. f
Hingedly connected. as at 8, with the top .tace ot each of the runners or slides 6 at a point in advance or the beam or member 2 is `an end portion of a rearwardly directed elongated strip or bar 9. This bar or strip 9 is ot a length to terminate rearwardly of the beam or member Q and said rear end portion has loosely disposed therethrough an upstanding rod 10 carried by the rear portion or the coacting runner or slide 6. interposed between said runner or slide 6 and the bar or strip 9 is an expansible member il, preferably a coil spring encircling the rod 10. The member 11 serves to urge the runner or slidetl downwardly yet permitting the same to have yielding upward movement.
Suitably secured to the rod or bar 5 is a rigging! to which; adapted to be hitched' a team of draft animals. ln. practice, the runners vor slides 6 slightly converge foi'- Wardly toward the central runner with the front of the device approximately twelve feet wide and the rear portion about thirteen feet wide, and with a device of such dimensions we iind best results can be attained with the use of four draft animals.
As the device isy drawn over the soil, each of the runners or slides 6 is capable of independent swinging movement in a vertical direction which is of particular advantage in properly packing the soil in hollows. It has also been found, in practice, that by having the runners or sleeves 6 independently movable, a more effective packing of the soil is effected with a resultant leveling of the ground and which result is especially desirable when a harvesting machine is adapted to be later used.
Our improved device has also been found to work with advantage Yin places where there are thistles or stubbles as it. will breal; them up and also level the land. Our kimproved device also effectively treats the soil to substantially eliminate drifting.
F rom the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a drag construct ed in accordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will alsobe obvious that our invention is susceptible of 'some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
` Ve claim: y i
l. An agricultural device of the class described comprising side runners, arod connecting said runners at the :forward end por tionsthereof, a beam connecting the'rear portionsof the runners and fixed thereto, a plurality of slides interposed between the runners, the forward portion of the slides being pivotally engaged with the rod, said slides having swinging movement independently of the runners and beam, and means (io-acting with each of the slides and the beam for urging the slides downwardly.
2. An agricultural device of the class described comprising side runners, a rod connecting said runners at the forward end portions thereof, a beanl connect-ing the rear portions of thel runners and fixed thereto, a plurality of slides interpoesd between the runners, the forward portion of the slides being pivotally engaged with the rod, said slides having swinging movement independently of the runners and beam, and means co-acting with each .of the slides and the bea-infor urging the slides downwardly, the runners being` of a height greater than the height of the slides.
3. An agricultural device of the class de scribed comprising side runners, a rod connecting said runners at the forward end portions thereof, a beam connecting the rear portions of the runners and fixed thereto, a plurality of slides interposed between the runners, the'forward portion of the slides being pivotally engaged with the rod, said slides having swinging movement independently of the runners and beam, a bar hingedly connected to each of the runners and extending rearwardly thereof and below the beam, and an eXpansible member interposed between the slide and the bar to maintain the bar in Contact with the beam and to urge the slide downwardly.
In .testimony whereof we hereunto afliX our signatures.
` AUGUST JQ MUELLER,
`ARNOLD BOLTER.
