SHARPENNR.
Application led September 20, 1921. Serial No. 501,925.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Im C. LEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yakima, in the county of Yakima and State of ilvashington, have invented a new and useful Sharpener, of which the following is a specification.
rThis invention aims to provide novel means whereby the perforated plate of a meat grinder may be sharpened, a portion of the grinder serving to support and carry the sharpening instrumentalities.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in section. a device constructed in accordance with the invention, mounted in a meat grinder, parts being larranged in the positions which they will assume whilst the perforated plate is being sharpened; Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure l; Figure 3 is a section taken through the sharpening disk.
The numeral 1 marks the barrel of a meat grinder, the barrel carrying a hopper 2 and being supported at 3. 1n any desired manner. In one end of the barrel 1-,-an annular recess 4 is formed. A perforated disk 5 fits in the recess 4. The barrel` l has a lug 6 projecting into the recess 4, the disk 5 having a notch 7 receiving the lug, the
disk, thus, being held against rotation in the barrel. lA-ring 8 is threaded on the barrel 1 and has a flange 10 engaging the forward or outer surface of the perforated disk 5. The ring 8 sometimes has lugs 11 facilitating the rotation of the ring.
Then it is desired to sharpen the" disk 5, the disk is left in place in the barrel 1, as shown in Figure 1. A shaft 21 is provided, and has a socket 77 which is journaled in one end of the barrel 1, the shaft having a squared part 22 `held in plate 23 secured at 5() to a sharpening disk 24. The forward end of the shaft 21 preferably is circular, as indicated at 25 so that it may rotate in the circular opening of the disk 5. Vhen rotation is imparted to the shaft 21, the sharpening disk 24 will be rotated, the disk 5 being ground down accordingly.
.The disk 24 may able way. Preferably, is consists of a layer wise to the felt '31, one or be made in any suitof carborundum indicated at 30, cemented to a layer 31 of felt, the felt acting as a packing. One or more layers of card board indicated at 32 are glued or secured othermore layers of wood veneer indicated at 33, being glued to the card board 32 or secured thereto other- Wise.
rlhe shaft 21 may carry a wheel 76 for grinding table knives and the like, and the socket 77 is adapted to receive the end of a drive shaft 78 journaled in a, frame .79 carrying fast and loose `pulleys 80 whereby rotation may be imparted to the Shaft 78 and thence to the shaft 21.l rlhe Wheel T6 acts as a fiy wheel cooperating with the shaft 21 and the disk 24. i
Having thus described the 1s claimed is 1. A machine for grinding disks, comprising a. barrel provided in one end with a recess for the disk to be ground; a ring threaded on the barrel and provided with an inwardly extended disk-retaining flange cooperating with the recess; a shaft journaled in the other end of' the barrel; and a grinding disk carried by the shaft and having its forward surface disposed approximately flush with the rear wall of the recess.
2. A machine for grinding disks comprising a barrel provided in one end with a recess invention, what `for the disk to be ground; disk-retaining extended beyond the disk retaining means;
a grinding disk carried by the shaft and having its forward surface disposed approximately flush with the rear wall of the recess; means external to the barre-l for rotating the shaft; and a fly wheel carried by said extended portion of the' shaft.
In testimony that I as'my own, I have hereto aiiixed myK signature in the vpresence of two Witnesses.
