Be it known that I, .Jonn Roscoe Environ,
Greenport, county of Sufiiolk, and State of New York, have invented new and useful. Improvements in Cutting Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
' 'My invention relates to cutting devices and refers particularly to devices suitable for cutting, eroding, or wearing away surfaces, with means whereby it may be adapted for other useful purposes.
The object of my invention is a power driven revoluble device whereby means of the proper substitution of elements is adapted for planing, or cutting away, surfaces by means of knife blades, erosive substances or other means, and whereby ,the position of the wearing away elements may be so determined as to enable it .to remove any desired amount of surface. from the object upon which it is operated. V
A "urther object-oi my invention is means whereby the removed portions of the surface may be collected and retained in a'bag, or container,thus preventing the dust arising from its use from contaminating theair and overcoming the uncleanliness and inconvenience which would otherwise result by the deposition of the removed substance upon the object subjected to the wearing away action of the device.
By the use of the words cutting, eroding and"wearing away, I do not limit myself to any particularfornroi' surface removal, as willbe evident upon a consideration oif'the device of my invention. 7

The casing top 10 has the boss 19 with an internally threaded opening 20, into which is meshed the externally threaded adjusting member 21. .The outward portion of the adjusting member 21 carries the gear wheel 22. The shaft 23 which is revoluble within an opening Within the adjusting member 21 and gear 22 has a recess in its outward central portion to receive the motor shaft 18. A key 24 allows of the telescopic movement of the shafts 18 and 23 but locks them into revoluble movement with each "other. A plurality of ball bearings within the ball races 25,26 attached to the shaft 23 act as bearings for the revolution of the shaft 23 within the member 21 and a similar plurality of ball bearings within the ball races 27, 28 attached to the shaft 23 act similarly. Carried by the casing top 10 is a revoluble elongated gear shaft 29 meshing with the gear wheel 22 and having the turning disk 30. The gear shaft 29 is carried'in the bearings 31 and 32 of the support 33. A set screw 34 maintains the gear 29 in fixed position. 1
Fixedly attached to the end of the shaft 23 is an annular plate 35, the plane of the plate being slightly out of right angular position to the shaft for purposes described later.
I A coil spring 36 abuts upon the plate 35 and the ball race member 27.
The outer face of the plate carries a plurality of knife blades 36, 36, 36.
In order that the knife blades may gradu ally work their way into the surface over which the device is passed, the portion of the blade nearest the exterior rim of the plate 35 is raised slightly, as shown in Figures l and 7.
The means'employed for varying the 1nclination of the knife blade to the surface over which the device is moved is shown particularly in Figures 5 and 6. Each knife has an opening through which is extended the screw bolt 37 threaded within an opening in the plate 35. Two threaded set screws 38, 38 are threaded within openings in the plate 35 and abut upon the knife blade 36. A lock nut 39 maintains the knife in a predetermined inclination.
The inner face of the plate 35 carries a plurality of fan vanes 40, 40.
A handle carrier 41 is extended into the two arms 42 and 43. The arm 42 is revoluble within the bearing 44 attached to the casing top 10, the pivot 45 carrying the set thumbscrew 46, in order to maintain the arm 42 in any desired position of revolution around the pivot 45. The other arm 43 is pivotally carried by the pivot 46 within the bearing 47 carried by the casing top 10. A removable handle 48 is insertable within the handle carrier 41. i
Fixedly attached to the flange side 11 is a bag supporting member 49 having an inwardly expanding elliptical opening 50 ex tending therethrough and opening'into the interior of the casing. The outward portion of the bag supporting member 49 has an annular recess 51 to which a dust collecting bag 52 is capable of being attached.
The bag 52 comprises a body portion extending into the open end portion 53. F ix-- edly attached to the body portion is a compartment member 54, open at the top, the end portion of the bag being capable of being folded and inserted therein. Fastening clasps 55, upon the inner face of the member 54 are capable of engagement with the clasps 56, 56 carried by the bag body. A drawing string 57, carried by the other end of the bag body, enables the bag to be firmly aflixed to the recess 51 of the member 49. WVhen the lower end of the bag is closed and placed within the member 54, the contents thereof can not escape. To empty the bag 52, the end member 53 is removed from the compartment 54 and the contents allowed to fall through the open end.
Figures 10 and 11 illustrate an eroding, or filing, plate 55 to replace the plate 35, if desired, carrying the rough file surface 56.
Figures 12 and 13 illustrate a plate carrying sand paper to replace the plate 35, if desired. The two plates 67 and 68 are attached to, and spaced from, each other by the imbedded screw bolts 69, 69, each carrying a revoluble sleeve 60. A split flat clamping ring 61 encircles the sleeves 60, and is capable of being tightened thereon by means of the screw 62 passing through holes in the ringends 63, 63. Sand-paper 64 is placed over the outer face of the plate 57, turned over the edges thereof and clamped into position by the clamping member 61.
The operation of my device is as follows It is placed upon a surface 65 and the shaft 18 revolved by means of the motor 15. This revolution revolves the shaft 23 and the plate 35. The knives 36, 36 are set at the desired inclination as explained above. In order to obtain the desired position of the knives 36, 36 to the surface 65 and thus predetermine the depth of blade cutting, the set screw 34 is released and the disk 30 revolved which revolves the member 21 and which is, therefore, raised, or lowered, through the medium of the threaded boss 19, which, in turn, raises, or lowers, the plate 35 with respect to the surface 65. The set screw 34 is then used to fix the device in the desired position. During the revolution of the plate 35, the fan blades 40, 40 cause a rotary suotional movement of the air within the casing and the particles removed from the surface 65 by the knives 36, 36 are sucked, or drawn, through the space 66 into the casing and are injected thence into the collecting bag 52. The movement of the device over the surface being treated produces ion smooth surface.
When the plate carrying the knives is replaced by the plates shown in Figures 10, 11, 12 and 13, the effect is of an eroding character rather than a cutting one;
It is evident that other cutting, eroding, or wearing away devices may be employed with my device, thus making it of genuine usefulness.
I do not limit myself to the particular size, shape, number, arrangement, or form of elements, shown and described, as these are given simply as a means for clearly explaining the device of my invention.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the character specified, in combination, a supporting casing open at the bottom, a motor carried by said casing, a shaft revoluble with said motor, a second shaft revoluble with the motor shaft and telescopic therewith, a threaded menr ber revoluble around the second shaft, an internally threaded opening within the cas ing top meshed with the threaded member, means for revolving the threaded member, means whereby the revolution of the threaded member will raise or lower the second shaft, means for locking the second shaft in a predetermined position, an eroding plate carried by the second shaft within the casing and spaced from the sides thereof and a plurality of fan blades carried by the plate capable of drawing eroded materials into the casing.
2. In a device of the character specified, in combination, a supporting casing open at the bottom, a motor carried by said casing, a shaft revoluble with said motor, a second shaft revoluble with the motor shaft and telescopic therewith, a threaded member revoluble around the second shaft, an internally threaded opening within the casing top meshed with the threaded member, means for revolving the threaded member, means whereby the revolution of the threaded member will raise or lower the second shaft, means for locking the second shaft in a predetermined position, a removable plate carried within the casing by the second shaft and revolublethereing into the casing materials separated by V the revolving knife blades.
3. In a device of the character specified, in combination, a supporting casing open at the bottom and having an opening in the side thereof, a motor carried by said casing, a shaft revoluble with said motor, a second shaft revoluble with the motor shaft and telescopic therewith, a threaded member revoluble around the second shaft, an internally threaded opening within the casing top meshed with the threaded member, means for revolving the threaded member, means whereby, the revolution of the threaded member will raise or lower the second shaft, means for locking the second shaft in a predetermined position, a removable plate carried within the casing by the second shaft and revoluble therewith, a plurality of knife blades carried by the outer face of the plate, means for changing the angle of said knife blades with respect to the face, a plurality of fan blades carried by the plate capable of drawing into the casing materials separated by the revolving knife blades and a bag over the casing side opening capable of receiving the materials drawn into the casing.
4. In a device of the character specified, in combination, a supporting casing open at the bottom and having an opening in the side thereof, a motor carried by said casing, a shaft revoluble with said motor, asecond shaft revoluble with the motor shaft and telescopic therewith, a threaded member revoluble around the second shaft, a gear wheel fixedly attached to the threaded member, a second gear wheel meshed with the gear of the threaded member, a threaded opening in the casing top meshing with the threaded member whereby the revolution of the second gear will cause the threaded member to move inwardly or outwardly of the casing, a plate carried by the second shaft within the casing, a plurality of knife blades carried by the outer face of the plate and a plurality of fan blades carried by the inner face of the plate.
