THIEFPROOF EECORD HOLDER.
Application filed April 18, .1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that WILLIAM A. FArrI-r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Murdock, in the county of Douglas and State of Illinois, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thiefproof Record Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined license tag and identification card holder for automobiles.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a license tag and identification card holder for automobiles wherein same is adapted to be placed in the casing positioned at any desirable point on an automobile where same will be visible from the front and rear and wherein said combined license tag and card will be sealed in said casing against removal by an unauthorized person.
A further object of my invention is to provide a combined license tag and identification card in which the lower portion of both sides of the card bears the license number of the automobile, make of the same, horse power, engine number, etc, while the upper portion of the front of the card bears the name of the owner in his own handwriting, the description of him and his finger prints which are supposed to be taken at the time of the granting of the car license, while the upper portion on the rear side of the card is provided space and indicia thereon to record any sale of the machine.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a casing for holding a combined license and identification card which will prevent stealing of said card within said casing and provided with a lid and backing which prevents the upper portion of the card from being displayed until after the seal of the casing has been broken and the lid of same has been raised.
An additional object of my invention is to provide a combined license and identification card in combination with a casing of the above stated character, which is simple in construction, efiicient for the purpose intended, and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a relatively low cost.
These and like objects of the invention will be better understood as the description follows and as is specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
Serial No. 554,528.
Referring to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and which clearly illustrates the construction of my improved license tag and card holder,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of same.
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is'a plan view of the window glass in the rear of the casing, showing same detached therefrom.
Figure is a plan view of the front glass cover, showing same removed from the casing.
Figure 5 is a plan view of one side of the license tag and identification card,'and
Figure 6 is a plan View of the reverse side of same.
Referring to the drawings in detail, like characters of reference'will be used to designate like parts in the different views.
The numeral 1 designates a casing comprising a rectangular frame formed with a lip 2 on the bottom of same and adapted to be pivotally connected as at 8 to a bracket 4r, whichis in turn secured to any part of an automobile where an identification card 5 can be plainly seen both from the front and rear when same is held within the rectan gular casing 1. The casing 1 is provided with a back plate 5 which forms the upper portion of the back and is connected therewith to a glass cover 6. A stop or guide flange 7 is positioned within the rectangular casing and one side of said stopcor flange engages the casing back 5 and. frame of the window 6, while the opposite side of the stop or flange 7 bears in engagement with the combined license and identification card o. A glass cover 8 fixed within the front of the. casing and the frame of same bears against the license and identification card, which cooperates with the stop or flange 7 to firmly hold'the card in position. The front of the casing has hingedly connected at the top of same a lid or cover 9, that ex tends one-half way down over the front of the glass covering 8, the purpose of which will be better understood as the description follows. The cover or lid 9 is provided with a tongue 10 having an aperture there- IlH WhGI'GlD a seal may be inserted for looking the cover or lid in a closed position witl the body of the rectangular frame.
The combined license and identification card is provided on the lower half of each side with the license number of the car, the
make, style, horse power, engine number, etc, while the upper half of the front of the car is the name of the owner written in his own hand writing, his address, age, weight,
height and description of him, and is also provided with a space to receive the finger prints of the owner of the car, while the upper half of the back of the card is provided with space to record any sale the owner may make of the car, also space to receive finger prints of the purchaser of same.
From the foregoing description of my invention, it can be readily seen that a card or license tag is sealed within a casing, and that the casing is so constructed that only the lower half of each side of the card is visible, which as above stated indicates the license number, make, style, etc, and assuming that the machine should be stolen and that the thief should attempt to dispose of the car, the prospective purchaser could raise the hinged cover or lid 9 and certify the correct owner of the car and if necessary could compare the finger prints on the card with those of the disposer of same. If the thief of the car should break the seal 10 and remove the card from the'casing, it would be readily apparent to the prospective purchaser that something was wrong and would warn him not to purchase the machine until the identity of the seller had been fully established.
In view of the foregoing description of my invention it is thought that any further explanation of same as to its operation and objects are unnecessary.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I realize that various minor changes may be resorted to, Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed, therefore, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction shown, nor to the combination and arrangement of parts.
It will be further noted from the above that a license tag and identification card and holder of the above stated character will prevent the using of a license tag on more than one automobile, which will result in a considerable saving to the government in the course of a year.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a device of the character described, comprising a rectangular casing, said casing being provided with a glass front in the lower half of the back, a combined license and identification card positioned Within said casing, a removable glass cover positioned within said casing and adapted to rest against the combined license and identification card and a hinged lid adapted to cover the upper half of the removable cover and identification card and lock said combined license and identification card in a sealed position within said casing.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
