BOOK CONTAINER.
Application filed August 1,1921. Serial No. 488,313.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KATHAR NE ANNA Know, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Elizabeth, county of Jo Daviess, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Containers, of which the following is a specification.
The main objects of this invention are to provide ap improved form oi; holder for visibly supporting a cook book during its use and protecting the book from spattering of material worked upon in the vicinity of the container; and to provide means within the holder for retaining the book in an open position but which is movable to a. position where it bears against one of the side walls so as not to be in the way when the container is used for the temporary storage of cakes or other bakery goods.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown-in the accompanying drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the holder showing in dotted outline a book supported I therein.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the holder taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
The present invention is adapted for use wherever it is desirable to protect a book or other record against dust, and also where it is desired to protect the record against damage by chemicals, as for instance, in a laboratory where valuable records are sometimes accidentally destroyed during their use.
In the form shown, the holder comprises a box-like structure 1, preferably formed of sheet-metal so as to be light in weight, yet rigid in construction. I
The top of the holder is in the form of a transparent plate 2, of glass or other suitable material, through which the record is observed. One of the side walls 3 of the container is hinged to the bottom 4, and is provided at its upper edge with a slot 5, for engagement with a catch 6, secured to the frame 7 which supports the glass plate.
Located within the container and secured to brackets 8 mounted on the side walls 9 adjacent the hinged section, is a pair of oppositely disposed spring clips 10, which are formed to provide clamping parts 11 normally urged against the sidewalls 9 and arranged to firmly grip the leaves of a" book 12 orother record between the, clipand the bottom 4.
' In order that the interior of the container be free from obstruction when, it is used as a storage receptacle, the clamping parts 11 walls when the record is removed.
In operatlon, the hlnged section 3 is opened to permit the insertionot the record between the clips 10 and bottom of the container. The door3is then closed so as to protect the record against dust or spatter- .ing of material worked upon in the vicinity I of the container. When. the record -isrethe side walls 9, and the holder may then be used as a receptacle for the temporary goods to prevent them storage of bakery from becoming dry. I
moved, the clamping parts 11 swing downi Q wardly and'outwardly into engagement with Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that certain details of the construction shown may he altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined'by the following claims.
.Iclaim:
1. A book container of the class-described,
comprising a box-like structure having a tansparenttop member, and a resilient ele- I merit located within said container and havmg a clamping part normally urged against one of the side walls of said structure, said clamping part being movable inwardly to a position permitting the insertion of abook between said clamping part and the bottom of said box-like structure;
2. A book container of the class described,
comprising'a box-like structure having a transparent top member, and a spring se cured to one of the side walls of said boxlike structure and having a clamping part normally urged against said one wall, said clamping part being movable inwardly to a position permitting the insertion of a book between said clamping part and the bottom of said box-like structure. p
3. A book container of the class described, comprising a box-like structure having bot.
tom and side Walls and a transparent glass top, one of said side Walls being hinged to said bottom, and a pair of oppositely disposed springs secured to the side walls adjacent said hinged well, said springs being located Within the box-like structure and having clamping parts normally urged against said aeent side Walls, said clamping parts being movable inwardly to a position permitting the insertion of a book between said clamping parts and bottom Wall.
Signed at Chicago this 18th. day of July,
KATHARINE ANNA KLOPF.
