To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED G. F. llUnowsin, a citizen of the United States, residing the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the fol: lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to signalling mechanisms for chines, and is an improvement on the device line-locking and disclosed in the application of George W.
Campbell, SerialNo. 240%46, filed June 15, 1918. which became Patent No. 1,407,982, dated February 28, 1922. shown as applied to an Underwood portable typewriter.
H is an object of this invention to provide a simple structure for line-locking; and sinnalling, which cannot he accidentally set. To this end, a margin-gage or stop is adjnstably mounted on a rod journaied in the shittdrame of the machine, provided with fixed arms. A, member having a double cam surface is mounted onthe carriage, one of saidcams beingadapted to cooperate with the margin-stop to operate one of said fixed arms to actuate a signalling device,- and the other cam surface being adapted to co-operate with the margin-stop to operate another of said arms to actuate a line-locking mechanism.

The lever 74 of the key-lockingmechanism and the arm 60 of the signalling mechanism may be returned to normal, by the spring 80, by retracting the carriage to its initial position at the right, or by depressing lingenpiece to break the contact between projection 44 and the cam member. The rod 40 returns to normal position, carrying With it arms 60 and 70, a retractile spring; 81, connected to the shift-frame and to the arm 70 igure i), being provided for this purpose. The tip of arm 60 depresses the tip of lever 65, anti swings past the latter, whereupon the spring 68 snaps the lever 65 baclr to normal.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a shiftable frame, a carriage mounted to travel in said frame, a rod journaled in said frame, a margin-gage device adjustably mounted on said rod, an arm fixed to said rod, a bell-ringing device mounted on said frame, said device comprisin a bell, a clapper pivoted on said frame, ant a trip-lever pivoted on said elapper and capable of independent downward rotation but adapted to rotate upwardly in- .tegrally with said clapper, and means on said carriage adapted to engage said margin gage device to rotate said rod and swing said arm upwardly, said arm being adapted to lie beneath said trip-lever and rotate said triplever and clapper upwardly, said arm being adapted to slip past said trip-lever to allow said tripdever to return to normal position and strike said hell.

In a typewritng machine, the combinaper, and a spring fixed to said frame and said trip-lever and normally holding said trip-lever and clapper in lowered position adjacent said bell, and means on said e'afrriage adapted to engage said margin-gage device to rotate said rod and swing said arm upwardly, said arm being adapted to lie beneath said trip-lever and rotate said t-riplever and clapper upwardly against the action of said spring, said arm being adapted to. slip past said trip-lever to allowsaid spring to returnsaid trip-lever and clapper to loweredposition and strike said bell.

operating arm fixed to said rod, abell-crank operating arm, and means on said carriage adapted to engage said margin-gage device to rotate said rod and operating arm, said operating arm being adapted to engage the adjacent arm of the bell-crank and rotate the latter about its pivot to position the other arm of said bell-crank beneath the universal bar and prevent actuation thereof.
9. In a typewriting machine having typekeys and a universal bar actuable by said keys, the combination of a shiftable frame,

said operating arm being adapted to engage the adjacent arm of the bell-crank and rotate the latter about its pivot to position the other arm of said bell-crankbeneath the universal bar and prevent actuation thereof, and a spring fixed to said machine and said bell-crank and normally holding the lastnamed arm of said bell-crank in ineffective position to allow actuation of the universal bar.
10. In a typewriting machine having type-keys and a universal bar actuable by said keys, the combination of a shiftable frame, a carriage mounted to travel in said frame, a rod journaled 1n sald frame, a
margin-gage device adjustably mounted on said rod, an operating arm fixed to said rod, a bell-crank pivoted on said machine and having one arm thereof adjacent the universal bar and the other arm thereof terminating in a cam surface adjacent said operatiiig arm, and means on said carriage adapted to engage said margin-gage device to rotate said rod and operating arm, said operating arm being adapted to engage said cam surface and rotate said bell-crank about its pivot to position the respective arm of said bell-crank beneath the universal bar and prevent actuation thereof.

In a typewriting machine having type-keys and a universal bar actuable by said keys, the combination of a shiftable frame, a carriage mounted to travel in said frame, a rod journaled in said frame, a margin-gage device adjustably mounted on said rod, an operating arm fixed to said rod, a bell-crank pivoted on said machine and having one arm thereof adjacent the uni ALFRED G.
