Application lediDeceniber 20, 1918. Serial No. 267,65-f
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Monnocn lilfaonormnn, a citizen ot the United States, and aresident ot Cleveland, county ci Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented a nenT and usei'iul Improvement in Registers, ot which the Afollowing is a speciiication, the "principle ot the invention being herein explained and the best mode in Which l have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it trom other inventions.
The present invention, relating, as indie cated, to registers is particularly directed to certain improvements in that general type ot machines Which are generally known as autographic registers, and which are used in shopsv ,and ottices for conveniently and quickly Writing out several duplicates an order,'receipt or other memorandum.
ln such machines it is customary to provide tivo or more rolls ofpaper, from which the individual sheets are ledv to the top oi the enclosed casing which is provided With an opening therein at one point and a sup#y porting table beneath *for the purpose oit Writing, and are then carried out rfrom the machine to a straight-edge for tearing off the Written tickets, orders or the like. *lin terposed between the superimposed ysheetsy of paper are sheets of carbon paper, which are usually brought permanently across the top ot the supporting table and slide betvveenthe sheets of papervvvhen drawn out.
The difficulty in such machinesis to keep*` thesuperimposed sheets of paper in exact and permanent registration during their passage through'the machine. Since themarhines are all printed with certain memoranda it is of little real use unless theprintinoj on 'the superimposed sheets is in exact alignment at all times,y as otherwise the carbon copies of the original sheet bear the Written memoranda at the Wrong place and opposite the Wrong printed memoranda or Vforms on the sheet. My improvements relate to animproved and simplified method ot maintaining-the superimposed Sheets in registration their passage through the machine, and to certain other improvements intended to simplify and make more convenient the construction and use ot such mechanism. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of'. the means hereinafter fully i described and particularly pointed out in1 the claims.
The annexed drawing and the' following descriptiongset forth in detail certain mechanism' embodying the invention, suchldis-k i closed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical torinsy in which the principle oi? the invention may be used. i
ln said annexed drawings p Fig.y 1 is a side elevation of my improved machine; Fig. 2 'is longitudinal section through the left end of the machine as viewed in Fig. 1; Fio. 3 is a transverse section on thek line 3-3,*`igure 1; and Figure l is 'a longitudinal section through `the handle and stop.
llh'e general construction and arrangement ofthe machine is best illustrated inl41 ig. l, and it is seen to consist ot a suitable rectangular boxlike enclosing casing 1,'p`ro-y vided with tivo or more rollers 2, each carrying a roll of paper 3. From these rolls the sheets of paper 1, 5 andv 6 are carried to the rear end ot the machinev and are than brought 'over small rolls orguides 7, trom Which they are carried ina superimposed relation across the top of the machine, and across a longitudinally disposed support or table kS. The ltorivard end ot the machine, at the top 9 of the casing, is provided with an'opening` 10 ot considerable extent directly above lone `portion ofthe table 8, andv at this point a luser may Write any desired memoranda upon the uppermost 6 ofthe threesheets 4, 5 'and 6. The top 9 or" the c-.fisingl is hinged at 11 at the rear end of the casing and may be swung upvvardlyin orderto open the casing for the purpose of removing and replacing any of the paper rolls.l l
At the rightside ot Jthe machine, as shown in Fig.l 3', thereis 'formed an extension or small enclosing casing 12, in which are mounted a roll 13 carrying one or more sheets of carbon paper. trom which roll the carbon paper is passed across the support- GOy ing table 8 and down on the outside of the of the carbon sheets against the sides, of the casing when the plate is in its locked position. A suiiicient tension and grip is put on the carbon paper to hold it in the position indicated with each of the sheets of 'carbon paper between two of the sheets of paper from the rolls 3, and this 'relation is maintained even when the sheets of paper from the rolls 3 are carried forward by the mechanism to be presently described.
A t the forward end of the machine there are mounted two co-operative corrugated rolls and 2l; The roll 2l is carried in suitable bearings in the sides of the casing proper and this shaft extends through one side of the casing and carries a crank arm 22 and handle 23 for rotating the two corrugated rolls to draw the paper between them and pass it out from the end of the casing. rllhe other corrugated roll 20, is provided with extending ends 21-, which are received in vertical slots '25 in a raised extension 26 on the forward end of the cover 9, and this roll is maintained in resilient but steady contact and engagement with the roll 21 by means of springs 27 which press down upon the shaft ends or spindles 24.
The handle 23, for operating the corrugated rolls, includes a spring pressed plunger 28 which is normally maintained in the position shown in 4 by'a coil spring 29, and in this position is pressedinwardly toward the casing and in a position to ena stop SOprojecting from the side ofthe casing,l which normally prevents movement of the handle in a direction to operate the rolls 2O and 2l to pass the paper therebetween.
The lower roll 2l is also provided with ratchet teeth 3l and a. pawl 32, which prevent operation of the rolls in such a way as to passvthe paper forwardlybetween them. The-'cover 9 is locked in a position to operatively engage the rolls 20 and 2l with the sheets of paper therebetween by means of pivoted hooks engaging over bolts 34 on the outer sidesof the' extension 26 of the top 9.
In operation the three sheets of paper 4, 5 and'G arex first passed forwardly over the supporting table 8 and under the cover' 9. The carbon sheets are' then brought between the sheets of paper and locked' in' position by the plate or bar 15, and the paper is positioned over the lower roll 2l. The cover is then brought down into position and locked with the corrugated rolls in operative position. lVhen the exposed portion of the sheets of paper are used `the plunger 23 is pulled out, thus releasing its inner end from contact with the stop 30, yand the handlel is given one complete revolution, the plunger being allowed to return to its normal position during that revolution so that it will engage against the stop and limit the action to exactly one revolution of the rolls 2O and 2l. These rolls pass paper between them, maintaining the sheets in exact registration and "alignment since the rolls grip and even slightly corrugate the paper which isv passed therethrough. rlhe exposed portion of the sheets may then be torn off against the straight-edge formed at the forward end of the cover 9.
The construction of the present register is extremely simple and inexpensive, while the action of the co-operative corrugating rolls upon the paper prevents any possibility of any one of the sheets of paper lagging behind or slipping to one side and spoiling the exact alignment of all the sheets.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided tie means stated by the following claim or the equivalent of such stated means be employed. y
l therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:v
ln a device of the character described, the combination of a platen. a plurality of paper carrying rolls mounted to allow two super-imposed sheets of paper to pass over said support papery feeding rolls disposed adjacent the endof said support. opposite that from which the sheets are fed, said paper feeding rolls provided with interengaging.y longitudinally disposed corrugations having rounded surfaces to grip and fold the sheets transversely their direction of feed only, thereby effecting uniform feeding or the sheets without mutilating the same.
9igned by me, this 19th day of December. l 8.
Munnocix MACDONALD.
