App1ication fi1ed July 5, 1922. Serial No; erases,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARoIN MAJGI-IER, a
citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Glenella, in the Province of Manitoba and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Gates, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates tocertain new and useful improvements in railway gates, and has particular reference to a gate adapted to be moved to a position to close a track crossing by devices automatically operated by the wheels of rolling stock passing thereover.
The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of operating means for railway crossings wherein a trip bar operated by the wheels of rolling stock automatically moves the gate to its closed position, and further automatically operating to open the gate when the train has passed the crossing; z
With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Tn the drawings forming a partof this application and in which like designating char acters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of a railway track provided with the automatic gate operated mechanism,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line IIII of Figure 1, showing by dotted lines, the gate in a closed position.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on line TIT-III of Figure 2 showing the wheel engaged trip bar positioned adjacent the track, and the shaft and gear members for automatically closing the gate,
Figure l. is a detail sectional view taken on line TVIV of Figure 2, showing the two track rails and the weighted arm of the shaft for operating the gate,
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view taken on line V-V of Figure 2 showing the two track rails, the operating shaft and the arms carried by the trip rods for operating the shaft,
Figure 6 is a fragmentary side elevational viewof a portion of one of the rails and the trip rod associated therewith showing the inclined end of the trip rod, and
Figure 7 is afragmentary top plan view of one of the track rails and trip rod associated therewith and further showing a portion of one of the bracket arms carried by the trip rod for operating the shaft.
In the accompanying drawing wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, the reference numerals 1 and 2 designate the track rails supported in the usualrmanner and traversing the crossing road 3 as shown in Figure 1.
A swingingly mounted gate is arranged adjacent the rails 52 and is adapted to be moved to a position crossing the road crossing 3, the operating mechanism therefor including a relatively long trip rod 4 positioned adjacent the inner side of the rail 2 for engagement by the 'wheels of rolling 7 stock, stud bolts 5 carried by the rail 2 extending through perpendicular slots 6 formedin the trip rod for guiding the move ment of the same. The trip rod 4 is maintained in its elevated position as shown in Figures 3 to 6 by spring devices 7 supported on the adjacent base flange of the rail 2 and engaging at their upper ends lugs 8 projecting laterally from the trip rod 4:, while each end of the trip rod is inclined downwardly as at 9, to provide for the gradually lowering movement of thetrip rod.
A shaft 10 is journaled in standards 11 longitudinally and midway of the rails 1 and 2 and carries crank portions 12 intermediate the ends thereof. The connection between the trip rod at and the crank portions 12 of the shaft 10 is shown more clearly in Figures 1, 5 and 7, a bracket arm 13 pivotally secured as at 14 to the outer face of the rod 4 and being provided upon the outer end thereof with an elongated slot 15 loosely receiving the cross arm of the crank portion 12, as clearly shown in Figure 5. The bracxet arms 13 are normally held at their limits of upward movement by the spring devices 7, and to assist said springs, the shaft 10 carries an arm 16 provided with an adjustably mounted weight 17 to accomplish the purpose as shown in Figures 1 and 4.
As shown in Figures 1 and 3, a perpendicular standard is mounted adjacent the track rail 2 at the outer side thereof and carries upon the upper end an angle arm 19 that rotatably supports a perpendicular shaft 29 to which a gate frame 21 is secured, the lower end of the shaft 20 extending beneath the standard arm 19 and having secured thereto a bevel pinion 22. The shaft 23 is journaled transversely of and beneath the track rails 2 in bearings 2a and carries upon the outer end thereof a beveled gear 25 in mesh with the pinion 22. A inion 26 is fixed to the inner end of the shaft 23 and meshes with the beveled gear 27 secured to the shaft 10.
In the operation of the device, the wheels of rolling stock approaching the trip rod t ride over the inclined end surfaces 9 for gradually lowering the trip bars against the tension of the springs 7 and the pressure of the weight 17 upon the arm 16 secured to the shaft 10, this movement swinging the arms 16 upwardly and simultaneously lowering the bracket arm 13 rigidly connected to the trip rod. The connection between the outer ends of the bracket arms 13 and the crank portions 12 of the shaft 10 causes a rotation of the shaft, and through the meshing gears above described, rotates the perpendicular shaft 20 supporting the gate frame 2i to move the same to closed position as shown by dotted lines in Figure 2 to close the track crossing 3, a stop 28 being provided for limiting the closing movement of the gate as shown in Figure 1. When the wheels travel beyond the trip rods at, the weight 17 upon the shaft arm 16 will rotate the shaft in a reverse direction to effect an opening movement of the gate, the spring 7 simultaneously elevating the trip rod 4 to its set position.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention,
it is nevertheless to be understood that va rious forms, modifi *ations and arrangements of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the in vention'as (la inied.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. An operating mechanism for a railway gate comprising in combination with a track rail, a trip rod resiliently supported adjacent the rail, a shaft journaled parallel with the rail, means rigidly connected to the trip rod and loosely connected to said shaft for rotating said shaft when the trip rod is lowered, a swingingly mounted gate, and means forming communication between said gate and shaft.
2. An operating mechanism for a railway gate comprising in combination with a track rail, a resiliently mounted trip rod associated with the rail, a longitudinal shaft journaled parallel with said rail, bracket arms rigidly connected to the trip rod and loosely connected to said shaft for rotating the shaft when the trip rod is lowered, a weighted arm connected to said shaft for reversely rotating the same when the trip rod is elevated, a swinging mounted gate and means forming communication between the shaft and gate.
3. An operating mechanism for a railway gate comprising in combination with a track rail, a resiliently mounted trip rod associated with the rail, a longitudinal shaft journaled parallel with said rail, bracket arms rigidly connected to the trip rod and loosely connected to said shaft for rotating the shaft when the trip rod is lowered, a weighted arm connected to said shaft for reversely rotating the same when the trip rod is elevated, a swingingly mounted gate, the gate including perpendicular shaft, a pinion secured to the lower end thereof. a cross shaft journaled beneath said track rail, a gear secured to the outer end of the cross shaft in mesh with said pinion, and gear connections between the inner endof the cross shaft and the longitudinal shaft.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
his M ARCTN MAJCIrllilR.
