residing at New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, have invented newand useful Improvements in Protective Devices for Railway-Crossings, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in protective :devices for railway crossings.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide gates at the opposite sides of a crossing, one ofwhich being provided with a track which is adapted to. be engaged by a projection upon a passing train, to lower the said gate, mechanism being provided upon the gate and connected with the opposite or remaining gates to cause all of the gates to be simultaneously lowered when ,the track of the first mentioned gate is contacted, and all of said gates being provided with means for simultaneously returning the same to their initial open position.
A further object of the invention is to construct an apparatus of this character whichshall embody the desirable features of simplicity of construction, cheapness to v manufacture and thorough accuracy in op eration.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of a crossing for railway lines provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken approximately on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view, partly in section, illustrating the means for operating the main gate. Fig. 4 is an elevation, partly injsection, of one of the co-acting or auxiliary gates and its connections. Fig. 5 is atop plan view ofthe device illustrated in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 isa detail elevation illustrating the connection of the bar 11 with the support 13, and Fig. 7 isa transverse sectional view'of the substantially L-shaped bar 11.

In the drawings, T designates a railway and R a road which is crossed by the tracks of the railway T.
The numerals 1 designate uprights, one of which being positioned adjacent each of the corners of the crossing.
2 designates gates each of which being pivoted, as at 3, to one of the uprights 1.
The numerals 4: designate wells, one of which being disposed adjacent each of the uprights 1, the said wells being preferably in the nature of tubes and having their lower portions embedded in the ground.
5 designates weights, one of which being disposed in each of the wells 4, and each of the weights has connected therewith a flexible element6 which is trained over a pulley 7 at the top of each of the wells and se-' cured each to one of the gates 2. Each of the uprights is provided with a lateral finger 8 which contacts with what may be termed the rear face of each of the gates 2 to prevent the same being swung beyond a vertical position or beyond a horizontal position, (in a manner which will be hereinafter be more fully set forth) the weights 5 normally swinging the said gates to a vertical position, as is to be understood.
Two of the gates, disposed at diametrically opposite corners of the crossing, indicated by the characters M and M will, for
convenience, be hereinafter referred to as the main gates, and the remaining pair of gates which are disposed diametrically opposite each of the main gates and designated respectively by the characters A and A will, for convenience, be hereinafter referred to as the auxiliary gates. Each of the gatesM and M is provided upon what may be termed its inner edge with an extension 9 that is disposed above its pivot 3 and each of said extensions is adapted to receive a pivot 10 that also passes through one of the ends of the rearwardly extending longitudinally disposed bar 11. Each of the bars 11 has its opposite end provided with an elongated slot through which is passed a pivot 12, the same being received in a suitable support 13. It will be noted that the support 13 is disposed below the pivot 10 at the opposite end of the bar 11,
so that each of the said bars is retained at an angle or inclination. The bars 11 are arranged adjacent the outer tracks of the railway T, and are, of course, of any desired length. The bars are substantially L-shaped in cross section, the inner flanges being indicated by the characters L and the connecting web or base of the said L-shaped members, indicated by the numeral 14, and adapted to ride in the channeled bars 11 and to contact with the lower wall 1 1 thereof is an operating finger 15 which is carried by the pilot or is otherwise arranged upon the engine or other member of a rolling stock which travels upon the tracks of the railroad so that the bars 11 will be moved to a substantially horizontal position and thus swing the gates M and M upon their pivots and across the road R.
The gate A is arranged transversely opposite the gate M and has pivotally connected thereto a longitudinally extending bar 16, the free end of the same being provided with an elongated slot through which passes a pivot whereby the said bar is connected to a suitable support, similar to the support 13, the bar 16 being disposed in parallel relation with the L-shaped bar or track 11 of the gate M, and arranged upon the roadbed between the tracks T are suitable eyes or bearings 17 within which is journaled a transversely disposed rod 18 that has its opposite ends provided with angular extensions 19, one of the said extensions being pivotally secured to the bar 11 as indicated by the numeral 20, and the second extension or arm 19 being likewise connected to the bar 16 as also indicated by the numeral 20. By this arrangement it will be noted that when the gate M is swung to a closed position by a passing train, the gate A will be likewise simultaneously closed as aforestated, the weights 5 will return the gates to their initial position and the fingers 8 contacting the gates will sustain them in a horizontal position.
The numerals 29 designate conduit pipes which are embedded within the road B. One of these conduits 29 is disposed between the gates A and M, the second conduit being arranged longitudinally between the gates M and A. Each of the conduit pipes 29 has its opposite ends entering the boxes 25 which are also embedded in the road adjacent the supports 1 and pivoted within each of said boxes is a sheave wheel or pulley 26. All of the gates below their pivots are provided with extending fingers 21 which have secured thereto flexible members or cables 23, the said cables passing through suitable openings in the closures for the boxes 25 and being trained under the pulleys 26 and through the conduits 29. The auxiliary gates A and A have their supports 1 provided with lugs or extensions to. which are pivotally secured pulley wheels 31, and one end of each of the cables 23 is trained over each of the pulleys 81 and is connected with the finger 21 of the said auxiliary gates A and A. It will be noted that the pulley wheels 31 are disposed a suitable distance above the connection of the cables with the fingers 21 of the gates A and A, and by the arrangement just described, it will be noted that when either of the main gates is operated to a lowering position, the said main gate, through the medium of the cables 23 as well as by the rod connection between the gates M and A will all be simultaneously lowered.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention,w,h at I claim as new is 1 1. In a device forthe purpose set forth, swinging gates arranged at the corners of a railway crossing, compensating weights for normally sustainingthe gates in a vertical open position, angularly arranged bars upon certain of the gates, a U-shaped member between the tracks and connecting two of the bars, and a flexible connection between the opposite gates for simultaneously swinging all of the gates to a closed position over the crossing when a weight is deposited upon any of the bars.

In a device for the purpose set forth, pivoted gates arranged one at each of the corners of a railway crossing, depending fingers upon the gates below their pivots, a flexible element connecting the oppositely longitudinally disposed gates, guide pulleys for the flexible elements," compensating weights for normally sustaining the gates in a vertical open position, means for halting the gates in either an open or a closed position, angular bars having a pivotal connection with certain of the gates, a connecting member between certain of the angular bars, and adapted when one of the bars is contacted to operate the opposite bars and to exert a tension upon the flexible elements simultaneously to close all of the gates.
8. In a device for the purpose set forth, a support at each of the corners of the railway crossing, a gate pivotally connected to each of the supports, a well arranged adja-' cent each of the supports, a weight within the well, a flexible element between each of the weights and each of the gates, flexible members disposed below the crossing and connecting the opposite longitudinal gates to cause the same to be lowered in unison, and means comprising angular bars adapted, upon compression, to swing one of the gates to permit of the simultaneous swinging movement of the remaining gates to a closed position.
