Be it known that I, HowARo DYKMAN, a resident of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys and Coverings Therefor, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to toys, and it especially appertains to such species thereof that are adapted to be carried about for the amusement of children.

The prime object of the present invention is to provide a toy including an attached element wherein it can be concealed, when desired.

Another object is to produce a device of the character described having a garment by means of which a doll or other toy may be carried in shielded condition.

A further object is the production of a device of the nature set forth embodying a combined doll and handbag.

Still another object is the provision of a device of the type specified having an element affording in inverted, extended condition a garment for the doll or other article, and capable of being converted and contracted over and around the latter to envelop the Sallie.

A still further object in producing a device of the class mentioned is to embody with the garment, positively operated means for contracting the latter when converted to encompass the doll, which means shall be hidden at such times as the garment is in normal position.

A supplemental object is to furnish a device of the species referred to, wherein the means for contracting the converted garment over the doll are utilized also as carriers for the handbag.

An additional object is to supply a device of, the genus alluded to in which an ornament on the bag constitutes a grip for holding the doll or toy when handling the same.

A general object is to obtain a practical device for the purpose implied, which shall be pleasing in appearance. composed of few, durable and simple parts. as also amenable of economical manufacture. I

scribed in their .preferred embodiments, pointed out in the subjoined claims, and illustrated. on the annexed drawing, wherein like parts are designated by the same reference characters throughoutthe several views.

In the said drawings Figure l is a front elevation of the device constituting the present invention, in the form which it is adapted to partake of when used as a doll for the amusement of a child.

Fig. IT is a perspective front view showing the manner in which a garment of the doll may be turned up to partly encompass the latter;

Fig. III is a View similar to the preceding representing the dolls garment entirely folded up and the device in condition to be carried as a bag; and

Generally described, the device under con sideration comprises in its organization the torso of a doll, terminating preferably at the waist line and with which are associated a head and appropriate arms. The upper portion of the dolls torso may be draped or dressed in any suitable manner, according to taste, and such clothing can be secured in place in any desired way. The garment,

which may be a skirt, is attached about the waist to the doll, and hangs freely below the lower portion thereof, being hemmed near its bottom edge to permit of the introduction of draw-strings. The latterare threaded thru the hem and preferably emerge therefrom at diametrally opposite sides interiorly of this garment. These strings are preferably of such length thatwhcn the garment is in a depending extended condition, they will be drawn entirely within the hem and become hidden. by the same. llowever, when it is requiredto carry the toy in concealment, the garment 'is'pulled upwardly over the figure and the strings are drawn to collapse the hem, thereby forming an encompassing bag. To the underside of the torso, which is preferably covered, is affixed a tassel to enhance the appearance of the bag when used as such, and to serve as ahandle or grip for the doll, at such times as the garment hangs downwardly.

The advantages of the invention as here outlined are best realized when all of its features and instrumentalities are combined in the one and. same structure, but, useful de vices may be produced embodying less than the whole.

It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, upon becoming conversant with the details thereof, that the same may be incorporated in several different constructions. The accompanying drawings, therefore, are submitted merely as showing the preferred exemplification of the invention.

Referring now to these views for a detailed description of the invention, the numeral 5 denotes the torso of a doll to which is connected a head 6 and suitable arms 7. The torso as well as the head and arms may be made of any appropriate material, and the arms can be movable or rigid relatively to the said torso. These features of construction are merely a question of detail and in carrying out the principles of the invention, these parts may be manufactured in any way'or of any material desired.

In the present embodiment of the invention, the portion of the conventional doll below the waist line is dispensed with, and the torso 5 discontinued at substantially this point, as best seen in Fig. IV. The doll thus formed may be dressed in such a manner that the upper part of its body is clothed in a waist 8, while another garment, forinstance a skirt element 9, will normally hang from the waist line of the torso.

In order to facilitate the dressing of the doll, particularly if it be formed of some hard substance, such as porcelain or papier macho, the lower portion of the torso is preferably provided with a circumambient channel or groove 10 in which are formed a series of spaced apertures 11 (see'Fig. IV).

The waist and skirt may be held gathered or in shirred position around the torso thru the instruinentality of a string 12, and sewn by means of a thread 13 passed in and out of the apertures 11. Or, either one of these binding media can be used alone to effect the anchoring of the dolls clothing to the said torso.

By preference, the skirt 9 is made quite full and furnished at or near its lower free edge with a hem 14 which serves as a guide for opposed sets of draw strings or hands 15, 16 that are threaded thru the same. These bands, which preferably are composed of ribbons, emerge thru openings or incisions provided therefor at diametrically opposite points of the skirts interior portion. As shown, the terminals of each set of ribbons, where they comeout of the hem, are tied into bow-knots 17, 18 which afford means for contracting the skirt,- as will here inafter appear.

At such times asthe dollisusedas 'aplaything for the amusement ofthe child, the

skirt is .permitted'tohang-from the torso the draw bands are invisible, being covered up by this garment. However, if it is desired to carry the doll in concealed condition, the skirt is drawn upwardly as indicated in Fig. II, until the hem comes to a point over the top of the doll figure, whereupon the bows 17, 18 are grasped and tension is exerted on the draw strings 15, 16. Such tension effects the shirring of the hem, which thereby contracts the skirtabove the figure, the same as is done with drawing together the mouth of a bag or pouch. When contracted, the parts appear as in Fig. III from which it will be seen that considerable portions of the draw bands or ribbons 15, 16 have been withdrawn from the hem to form loops that may be passed over the wrist or arm'to permit of the device being carried like the conventional handbag.

In view of the fact that when the skirt garment is collapsed as described, for the purpose of enclosing the doll, the bottom or underside of the torso is exposed to view, the latter is preferably provided with a suitable covering or facing 19. This covering may be glued or otherwise secured to the said torso, or it can be convenientlyspread thereon by simply drawing up the edges of the facing over the sides of the figure and holding them there by the same means which hold the garments in position.

The aesthetic appearance of the collapsed device may be enhanced by attaching an ornament such as a tassel 20 to the facing or covering 19. Aside from its decorative value, this tassel can be used as a handle for the doll when the lower garment portion 9 thereof is distended as shown in Fig. I. By thrusting one hand under the skirt, the said tassel may be grasped for the purpose of holcling the doll before the child for its amusement.

It will be apparent from the foregoing description of the invention that the sanie is of novel and unique construction, and fills a long-felt want, particularly for persons who are in the habit of taking children along with them when going out. lVhen the skirt is collasped, the device may readily be suspended by its loops from the wrist of the person carrying the same, thus leaving both hands ofthe latter free and unem-umbered.

The doll when carried in this manner is entirely concealed, and instead of causing embarassment to a sensitive person, as the lugging of a doll of the conventional type would be apt to do, this device becomes an article of adornment, rather than a sourceof annoyance.

In itspractical forms, the device under consideration may be made highly artistic and pleasing in appearance, by making the bows 17 518 and the'dr'aw strings 15, 16, of 0 I p colored ribbons or f ancy-cordfwhile the in- :afterthe manner depicted-in" F1g;-I,-wherem -*ner'- side' of the" skirt 9" which is 1 exposed at such times as the doll is concealed, may be provided with an ornamental facing so as to improve the aspect of the bag when carried as such. 7

Another feature of the present invention is that when the device is used as a handbag, the doll portion is supported in an upright position. Accordingly, if the skirt is expanded and the doll brought into view, the latter appears in neat and attractive condition instead of being di heveled and disarranged, which would be the case, were it in an inverted position.

This device is in its entirety, light, clurable and ornamental, and while possessing all of the advantages of the conventional doll, is wholly lacking the objectionable features inherent therein concerning weight and size, as ordinarily made. It is important to note that all of the benefits of this invention can be obtained without increasing the cost of the doll over that which would usually be paid for a plaything of the same character and quality in one of the conventional types of dolls now in common use that may be carried in a separate ba In the foregoing detailed description of the invention, the skirt portion 9 has been referred to as associated with a doll torso and head. However, in lieu of a doll as represented in the drawings, a manikin, image or. statuette may be employed and a skirt or other appropriate garment combined therewith substantially in the manner shown and described.

While a certain preferred embodiment of this device has been shown and described, it will be understood that changes in the form, arrangements, proportions, sizes and details thereof may be made, without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim, is i 1. A. device of the character described including a figure member, a reversible garment element afiixed to said member and exposing it to view when depending therefrom, said. element being capable of concealing the member when. converted thereover, and means carried by the element serving to maintain it in the la st named position.

2. A device of the character described including a toy object, simulating the upper part of a doll, a flexible skirt-element secured to the waist of said object leaving it exposed as a doll when depending therefrom but admitting of being folded in reversed condition around the same to constitute a gag therefor, and means for carrying said 3. A device of the character described including a toy or the like, a hemmed skirt garment appendage thereto convertible into a bag for the same, and pliant means slidable within the hem of said appendage constituting a carrying handle for the covered toy.

A device of the character described including a bag having sides capable of being inverted, a figure member attached to the bottom of said bag normally concealed therein, said sides constituting a garment appendage to said member when the latter is exposed to View, and means attached to the bag for carrying it when drawn over the figure.

5. A device of the character described including a reversible bag, a figure member attached to the interior of said bag so as to be enclosed thereby in normal condition and to be exposed to view when the bag is reversed, and pliant means connected with the latter for closing it over said member.

6. A device of the character described ineluding a bag having reversible sides provided with a guide, a figure member afixed to the interior thereof, said member being encompassed by said sides when the bag is closed but appearing to view while the sides are reversed, and carrying means for said bag arranged upon opening of the same to disappear within said guide.

7. A device of the character described including a reversible bag, a figure member attached interiorly to the botom of the same so as to be normally concealed therein and brought into sight while the sides of said bag are reversed, and an ornament secured to the exterior of the bag providing a grip for holding said member in exposed position.

8. A device of the character described ineluding a figure member comprising the torso of a doll, a skirt element applied to said torso, said element being capable of folding over and enclosing the member so as to constitute a bag concealing the latter, means for securing the upper part of the element to the torso, and other means near the lower edge of the said element serving as a carrier handle for said bag.
