DRUM AND CYMBAL HEATER.
appunti@ med December 23, 1921. serial No. 594,378.
To all whom t my Be it knownthaat I, Gnome I. DANLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drum and Cymbal Beaters, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to drum and cymbal beaters of the pedal actuated type, such as forms the subject matter of Patent No. 1,386,605 of August 9, 1921, to Robert C. Danly, A nd the present improvement has for its objects To provide a simple and durable structural formation and association of parts whereby an eicient mechanism is produced in an economical manner.
To provide an effective means for connecting the cymbal beater arm to the drum beater arm in a manner adapted to permit of a ready swingingr of the cymbal beater arm from an active to an iii-active position, and with which slid cymbal beater arm is effectively held in either position' to which it may be moved the operator, all as will hereinafter more lly appear.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1, is a side elevation, illustrating in full lines, the parts in the normal retracted position, and in dotted lines the parts in their striking position.
Fig. 2, is a rear end elevation.
Fig. 3, is a top view of the cymbal beater arm, showing its connection to the drum beater arm, which latter is shown in section.
Fig. 1, is an enlarged detail horizontal section on line 4-4, Fig. 1.
Fig. 5, is an enlarged detail vertical section on line 5 5, Fi
Like reference numerals parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the supporting base or floor member of the mechanism, comprising upper and lower strips of plate metal lixedly secured together at their midlength, with the end of one strip formed with a transverse loop or pivot eye 2, and with the opposite ends of the strips arranged in separated relation to form a pair of spaced resilient clamping jaws 3 adapted to engage the usual hoop of a drum and have clamping engagement therewith through the instrumentality of a clamping indicate like screw 4 passing through intermediate parts of said jaws, as shown.
5 designates the carrying arm of the drum beater head 6, of an angular shape, and which in the preferred construction is formed of rod metal bent to an angular shape to provide a. straight stem portion 7 carrying on its free end the aforesaid beater head 6, and a pedal portion 8 'of a closed loop shape having a triangular form, with the transverse member 9 of said loop having a straight form and adapted to fit and have pivotal movement in the pivot eye 2 of the base member 1. In the described for mation of arts the triangular loop shape of the peda portion 8 is adapted to provide a wide and ample rest for the foot of the operator in actuating the present mechanism.
10 designates a curved spring of plate metal secured to the base member l1 near the pivot eye 2 thereof, with its free end bearing against the under side of the pedal p ortion 8 to yieldingly hold the beater parts in their normal retracted position. The described formation and arrangement of the spring 10 and associated parts is adapted to provide an efficient and very easy operation in actual use, in that onlya slight resistance is offered to the initial movement of the beater carrying arms, with such resistance progressively increasing as the movement progresses due to theshift of the fulcrum of the spring along the base 1 as the Hexure of the spring increases.
1l. designates the carrying arm of a cymbal beater head, formed of plate metal, and having at one end a holding eye 11 for the usual. adjustable stem of a cymbal beater head, with the other end bearing against the rod portion 7 of the carrying arm of the drum beater head, with such end formed with curved channels 12 and 13 in cross relation to each other for alternate holding engagement with the adjacent curved surface of said rod portion 7. Said end of the arm is also formed with an orifice central of said cross channels 12, 13 for pivotal attachment to said rod portion by means as follows 14 designates a fixed stem or pin extending laterally from the aforesaid rod portion 7, provided with an outer head 15 forming an abutment for the bearingI washer or collar 16 of a spring 17 arranged between the collar 16 and the outer face of the arm 11 and adapted to yieldingly force said arm against the rod 7 and retain one or the other oi the curved channels l2, 13, in holding; engagement with the rod 7, as the carrying arm l1 off the cymbal beaterhead is manualiy moved to an active position at right angles to the rod or stem 7, or to an active position in parallel relation to said rod or stem.
lifavinp; thus fully described my invention7 what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: f
l. In a drum beater mechanism, the combination of a base member Yformed of upper and lower strips oi'f plate metal and having; an integral transversepivot eye at one end and a 'pair of integral clamping` jaws at the other end, a clamping; screw associated with said jaws, a drum beater arm havingl an angular shape and having pivotal engagement in the pivot eye oli the base member,
and a plate metal spring; of a curved form attached. at one end to the base member adjacent to its pivot eye `with the tree end of the spring having;` bearing against the under side of the beaterl carrying arm.
2, ln a drum beater mechanism, the combination of a base member formed of upper and lower strips of plate metal and having an integral transverse pivot eye at one end and a pair ot integral clamping jaws at the other end, a clamping' sereT associated with said iavvs, a ldrum beater arm having; an angular shape and formed or rod metal with its pedal portion formed by ay triangular'loop of the rod material., said loop having a straight transverse portion for pivotal enlejagement in the pivot eye of the base member, and a plate Vmetal spring; olE `a curved torni attached at one end tothe base member adjacent to its pivot eye with the :tree end ol" the spring; having' bearing `aga-inst the underside oi" said triangular loop.
ln a combined drum and cymbal beater mechanism, the combination of a. carryinsa stem of a drum beater head, a plate metal arm having at one end attaching; means for a cymbal beater head and at its other end having' crossed curved channels and a. central pivot orilice, a tired lateral stem secured to the carrying stem of the drum beater head engagging` said pivot orilice, and a spring` associated with said lateral stem and adapted to torce the carrying; arm or the cymbal beater head towards the carryingstem of the drum beater head to maintain one or the other or the crossed channels in engagement with the carrying stem ol thc drum beater head.
Ll. ln a combined drum and'cymbal beater mechanism, the combination of a carrying stem ot a drum beater head, a plate metal arm having at one end attaching means lor a cymbal beater head and at its other end havingu crossed curved channels and a central pivot orifice, a headed lateral stem secured to the carryingstem of the drum beater head engaging' said `pivot oriiice` abearing collar arranged on saidlateral stem and a coiled springv encircling said lateral stein and interposed between said collar and, said arm and adapted `to torce` said arm towards the stem of the drum beater head to maintain one or the other of the crossed channels in engagement with said stem of the drum beater head. i
Signed at Chicago, Illinois this l19th day of December, 1921. a GEORGE I. DANLY.
