Be it known that l, Josnrrr B. FnY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horn Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is to provide meanswhereby the operator of an automobile lia-ving a push button controlling the circuit embracing the signal horn located substantially in the center of the steering wheel, can actuate the push button without removing his hand fromv the steering wheel.
Another Objectis to provide adevice for the purpose. statedy that may be readily mounted on various types and makes of automobiles, wherein thepush button is located as described. f
These and other objects are attained by the means described herein and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a steering wheel having mounted upon it a device embodying my invention. Y

My invention comprises a plate A having a yoke formed at one end thereof, the branches a of which yoke are adapted to be mounted upon the legs ZJ of the quadrant B by means of brackets a. The brackets comprise an upper jaw a2 having` a blind bore a3 therein, through which a screw at may extend, the head of the screw lying upon the upper surface of the jaw, and a lower aw a5 having a threaded bore a therein. in which the screw a* enga-ges. The opposed faces a formed on the jaws are rounded so that the aws may be mounted on the quadrant of any automobile. A linger al is formed at the free end of each aw to retain the jaws on the quadrant. The branches (t have formed in them, near their ends, a blind bore a7 through which the screw at extends. The screw a4c serves to mount the plate upon the jaws and to also mount the jaws upon the quadrant. The plate has a threaded slot as extending therethrough.l A

If desired the slot as may be elongated radially to permit radial adjustment of the rod D. A second lock nut would then be disposed below the plate to cooperate with the first mentioned lock nut to position the rod D radially in relation to the push button. The other leg Z8 of the rod D extends substantially parallel with the plate A and its free end is adapted to lie immediately over and upon the push button C disposed substantially central to the steering wheel E. The free end of the plate A terminates immediately adjacent the steering wheel E andin such proximity thereto that an operator can exert' a downward pressure on the free end of the plate by means of his thumb without removing his hand from the steering wheel or weakening his grip upon the steer-ing wheel. f
If desired the branches of the yoke may be pivotally mounted upon the brackets a. The structure shown in- Figs. 1, 2 and 3 however permit a very slight play of the kyoke branches' upon the screws a4, which play is sufficient to permit the necessary depressing of the plate A required t0 actuate the push button. The push button C is spring actuated as is common practice, and the return of the spring -to its normal position after the releasing of the pressure thereupon will suffice to return the plate to its v normal position.
Normally the parts are in the relation as shown in Fig. 2. When an operator desires to actuate the push buttom C, a downward pressure exerted upon the free end of the plate A is transmitted to the rod D and from the rod to the push button C, whereby the push button is moved downwardly against a yielding resistance forming a part of the push button, which push buttonl construction is well known in the art, thereby causing the push button to complete an electrical circuit embracing a signal horn or other device. When the plate A is released from this downward pressure, the yielding means in the-.push button mechanism moves the push button upwardly and this upward 'movement oft the push button is transmitted to the rod l) and the plate A, wherefore the parts resume their' normal positions. rlhe rod D may be readily adjusted longitudinally ol: its length to permit adjusting ot the device on the various automobiles to which it may be applied and having a push button disposed as described.
in lligs. and 5 l show a modification of my device, to be employed when the legs of the quadrant so disposed that the center oit movement of the plate A would be located between the push button and the operaters thumb` This condition will exist 'where the quadrant legs extend at right angles to one another if the form of my invention shown in l :is used. My modied term meets this condition by pivotally mounting the free ends of the yoke branches upon the lower or main jaws all of the brackets a', by means of suitable screws or pivots cl2. The upper or auxiliary jaws a are pivotally mounted on the main jaws by means of the screws als which are tightened or set to clamp the jaws upon one another. The pivotal connections cl2 permit moving of the said center of movement of the plate beyond the push button. It is preferable in my modified form to make the lower jaw longer than the upper jaw to permit ready mounting ot the device upon various types o'l quadrants having their legs disposed at angles at or near 180o. In these views I also show the rod D as being radially adjustable.
What l claim is:
l. ln a push button actuating device for automobiles having a signal controlling push button mounted lsubstantially central to the steering wheel, the combination of a plate, branches Jformed at one end of the plate, brackets adapted to mount the branches upon the steering wheel quadrant so as to disiframes the steering wheel, the combination of a plate extending substantially between the rim of the steering wheel and the center of the wheel and having an elongated slot extending longitudinally thereof, branches formed on the centermost end of the plate, brackets mounting the branches upon the steering wheel quadrant, a rod adjustable radially and longitudinally through the slot in the plate engaging the push button adapted to transmit a downward pressure exerted upon the free end of the plate to the push button and to transmit an upward pressure from the push button to the plate.
3. ln an attachment for a push button mounted substantially central to an automobile steering wheel, the combination oi a slotted plate, a yoke formed on one end of the plate, brackets adapted to be mounted upon an automobile quadrant and to mount the yoke branches upon the quadrant, whereby the plate is supported in substantially the same plane with that in which the steering wheel is rotatable, a rod ad- `instable through the slot in the plate mounted on the plate and engaging the push button whereby pressure upon the plate may be transmitted to the ush button, and pressure upon the push Button may be transmitted to the plate.
