EQUALIZING NECK YOKE.
Application filed September 30, 1921. Serial No. 504,355.
To all whom at my concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS GnnBNnR, a citizen of the United States, residin at Thompson Township, in the county 0 Jo Daviess and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Equalizing Neck Yokes, of which the fob lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in equalizing neck yokes, and the primary object of the invention is to provide means whereby the operation of the tongue of the vehicle may be guided and controlled while the load is drawn by three horses and where by all strains are properly equalized.
\Vith the foregoing object outlined and with other objects in View, reference will be had. to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the equalizing neck yoke applied to a vehicle tongue,
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same partly broken away for the purpose of clearness,
Fig. 3 is a lan view of the front plate, of the equalizing neck yoke,
Fig. 4 is a similar View of the rear plate of the neck yoke, and
Fig, 5 is a side view partly in section of the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the drawing, 1 designates the front plate of the neck yoke and 2 is the rear same. These plates are spaced apart and each provided with an aperture 3. through which the tongue 4 of the vehicle is adapted to extend. The tongue is provided with the usual downwardly projecting lugs 5 which engages the rear side of the rear plate 2 when the equalizer is in use.
Arranged between the plates, is a U-shaped member 6, the legs of which are provided with rearwardly extending curved arms 7 having curved slots 8. The arms 7 project through recesses 9 provided in the rear plate 2, and a bolt 10 extends through the slots 8 and through the tongue 4 for the purpose of securing the neck yoke to the tongue. It is obvious that the angle of the plates 1 and 2 may be adjusted relatively to the tongue 4 by sliding the slotted portion of the arms 7 on the bolt 10.
The U-shaped member 6 is secured to the plates 1 and 2 by means of pins 11 which pass through the cross head of the U-shaped member and through the plates 1 and 2. It will be noted from Figs. 3 and 5 that one corner of the front plate 1 is ofiset as is shown at 12 and this ofi'set portion increases the width of the space between the plates 1 and 2 at the upper portions of the plates. Levers 141 and 15 are pivotally connected to the plates 1 and 2 by means of a pivot pin 16, and at the point 18 where the levers overlap the oilset portion 1.2 is provided. 1- lever 19 is pivotally mounted between the plates at the point 20 and the outer ends of this lever are pivotally connected to the lower ends of links 21, which have their upper ends pivotally connected to intermediate portions of the levers 14 and 15 as shown at 22.
In use, the device constructed in the manner above set forth is placed on the front end of the tongue 4 and the bolt 10 is passed through the tongue and through the slots 8 and then the nut on the bolt is tightened for the purpose of securing the parts in position.
lVhen in operation, the load causes the tongue to turn in one direction, and the pressure of the tongue against the arm 7 will cause the plates 1 and 2 to turn on their pivots 16 and 20, and entirely equalize the pressure on the three horses.
It will be noted that a doubletree 23 is connected to the outer end of the lever 14 by a suitable connecting device 21, and eyes or rings 25 are provided at the outer ends of the doubletree to receive the harness straps. Another ring 26 is provided at the outer end of the lever 15 to receive the strap of the harness of the third horse, it being understood that two of the horses are runnected to the rings 25.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the mechanism may be readily understood by those skilled in the art, and I am aware that various changes may be made in the construction illustrated without departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the following claims.
What is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is 1. In combination, a vehicle pole, a device attached to the front end of said pole and arranged substantially perpendicular to the latter, levers having their ends pivotally connected together and to said device and arranged above the pole, another lever arranged beneath the pole and pivotally conllU nected intermediate its ends to said device, and substantially vertical links pivotally connecting the first mentioned levers to the second mentioned lever.
2. An equalizing neck yoke including a plurality of plates spaced apart, a member connected to said plates and having projecting arms adapted to be connected to a vehicle pole, levers having their inner ends pivotally connected to said plates, another lever pivotall connected to said plates, and links pivotall y connecting the first mentioned levers to the second mentioned levers.
3. A combination of the kind defined by claim 1 in which said links are pivotally connected to the outer ends of the second mentioned lever and are pivotally connected to intermediate portions of the first mentioned levers.
4. A combination of the kind defined by claim 1 in which a whitfietree is connected to the outer end of one of the first mentioned levers, and a connecting device is provided at the outer end of the other first mentioned lever.
5. An equalizing neck yoke including a plurality of plates spaced apart and each provided with an aperture adapted to receive a vehicle'tongue, a H -shapsdnnember mounted between said plates and having rearvvardly extending slotted curved arms which pro'iectthrough one of saidplates, a fastenin means for connecting said arms to a ve i'ele tongue, a plurality of levers having their inner ends arranged between and pivotally connected to said plates, a third lever having its medial portion pivotally connected to said plate, links connecting the outer ends of the third lever to intermediate portions of the first mentioned levers, a Whifiletree connected to the outer end of one of the first mentioned levers, and a connecting device arranged at the outer end of the other first mentioned lever.
6. A neck yoke of the kind defined by claim 5 in Which'one ofsaid plates isprovided with an offset portion to increase the width of the space between the plates at one point, and in which the first mentioned levers overlap one another at the widened portion of said space.
