UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK IB. TWINING, OF TROY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO GEO. P. IDE 6c COMPANY, INC., OF TROY, NEN YORK, A. CORPORATION 0F NEW YORK.
SOFT TURNOVER COLLAR.
Application filed August 15, 1921.
To all who/m, t may cof/110cm Be it known that I, FRANK B. TwrNrNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soft Turnover Col* lars, of which the following is a specification.
Manyattempts have been made to produce a soft unstarched turn over collar, all with more or less success, by placing various kinds of rigidifying attachments or plies in the collar, but these have been found more or less objectionable, especially those wherein the reinforcing element is detachable, because of the liability7 of loss of the element, but notwithstanding these objections the soft turn over collar has become a very popular collar and there is a large demand for them.
Attempts have been made to make a collar of a very rigid or stiff material, but in such instance it was found necessary to weaken the fabric along the line of fold, but even this is objectionable because it makes the collar weak at a point where it receives the most wear, consequently the collar will giveA away first at such weakened line.
The object of my invention is to produce a soft collar, preferably from a multiply interwoven fabric, which will have a natural predetermined folding line or guide for the folding of the collar, without in any degree weakening the fabric of the collar, thereby producing a very desirable soft turn over collar with no weakened zones, no detachable rigidifying elements, and free from the objections of soft collars prior to my invention.
My invention consists of a soft folding collar from one piece of fabric made up of an inner and outer panel with an intermediate strengthened fold portion.
My invention consists further of a collar comprising aneck band and a turn over top portion made from a fabric of a plurality of interwoven plies with additional interwoven ply or plies at the juncture of the neck band and turn over top portion.
My invention consists further of a collar, cu" and the like, made from a multiply in* terwoven fabric of uniform thickness throughout having an intermediate thickened or stiffened portion formed by one or more added interwoven plies at the fold line of the collah Serial N0. 492,499.
While I have, for the purposes of disclosing my invention, shown it embodied in a soft turn down collar, it will be understood that the invention can be practiced in the manufacture of collars designed to be starched and that the invention can be utilized in standing collars that have fold lines at the front.
In the drawings- Figure l is a plan view of a collar, laid flat and embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the collar folded, one end of the top fold turned back.
Figure 3 is a sectional View on the line 3 3, Figure 2.
The reference numeral 1 designates the neck band and 2 the turn over top of the neck band, which may be of any desired pattern; the neck band is provided with the usual button holes 3, 4 and 5.
The collar is made from a multiply interwoven fabric; the several layers or plies being woven from cotton, linen or other thread of any suitable kind and quality appropriate to collar manufacture. The facing of the turn over top portion may be made of thread of different quality or character than the other plies.
The fabric for my improved collars is woven with additional interwoven threads in the weaving of the fabric, which extend longitudinally of the collar at the juncture, or zone of juncture of the neckband and turn over top portion as indicated by the reference numeral 6, which additional interwoven threads increase the thickness of the fabric at the fold Zone of the collar and form a natural predetermined line of folding of the collar. These additional threads', constitute an edge fold portion connecting the neck band, and a fold over top and constitute a thickened or stiffened part of the multiply interwoven fabric.
l have found that the fabric from which I make my collar can be woven on existing machines without making any changes in the machines, therefore manufacturing cost is not increased from that standpoint.
Collars have been made for me embodying my invention, which have been found to possess all the advantages of soft unstarched collars, plus the advantages of my invention, among which is the fact that the collar stands up well without starching, is of coinparative stiffness, and is free from buckling or wrinkling, the thickened portion constituting predetermined fold line whereby the collar will always lhave the proper set on the neck of' the wearer without starching.
Another advantage of having this thickened or stif'fened fold line guide is that it functions to give the collar a neat set around the neck of the wearer inasmuch as it holds the .top edgeofthe collar in a graceful curve and prevents the top edge'from breaking or puckeri-ng.
i What I claim is:
l. A folding collar or cuffn woven in one piece made yup of' a neck band `and va turn ydown portion ,and a strengthened fold portion adjacent the fold line of the Collar.
2. A folding or turned `down .collar Ina-de up of ,la A nfmltiply interwoven fabric, forming both the jec-k .band and :the turn down .portions of ,the collar, an added interwoven thickness near the top Vof the neck band por tion of' the collar to provide an increased .thickness yand stiffness near vthe fold line bev tween the neckband and the folding portion of' the collar.
3. A folding collar having a neck band portion and a turn down portion of a thickness to impart stiffness tothe collar, one of,
4. A folding collar having a neck band portion and a turn downportion of appropriate thickness to impart stiffness to the collar, the neck band having an integral upper edge relatively stiffer than the balance of the neckband the edge of the stiferedge defining the fold line.
5. A folding or turn down collar comprising a neck band portion anda turn down portion, composed of al plurality o f interwoven plies, there bein@r additional integral interwoven warp threas near .the juncture between the band and ,turn ydown portion.
In testimony whereof I affix m s nature.
