NHTED STATES nnrcx K. LIEN, or sen mneo, CALIFORNIA.
PARING KNIFE.
Application filed September 20, 1920.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ERICK K. LIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Faring Knife, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to paring knives and the objects of my invention are: First, to provide a paring knife which will limit the thickness of the peel; second, to provide a paring knife in which the guard member is a roller so that it will not tend to clog and is easy of operation; third, to provide a knife of this class in which the parts are readily removed so that the blade may be easily sharpened; fourth, to provide a knife of this class which is adjustable for taking up the wear of. the knife blade; fifth, to provide a knife of this class with a means for engaging one of the fingers for supporting the knife in the hand and sixth, to provide a knife of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, easy to sharpen, easy to adjust, efficient in its action and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:
Figure 1 is a front edge view of the knife; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view thereof; Fig. 3 is a sectional view through 3-3 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the handle supporting portion on the opposite side from that of Fig, 2.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.
The handle 1, bladeg 2, finger engaging support 3, roller support 1, roller 5, roller support 6, screw 7, supporting block 8 and adjusting screw 9 constitute the principal parts and portions of my paring knife.
The blade 2 is of the ordinary shape and is provided with a hole therein adapted for the screw 7. It is inserted in a slot in the the handle and secured thereto in the conventional manner. Secured to the blade on.
Serial No. 411,389.
one side is a loop member 3 provided with an extended portion which extends between the extended portion of the blade and handle and secured by means of a pin 1 and secured in this loop member is the finger engaging support 3 which is preferably a wire shaped member as shown bestin Figs. 1 and a ofthe drawings and extending therefrom forming a finger hold for helping to support the knife. On the other side of the blade is a flange member with a portion extending between the blade and the handle and provided with a support 4 which is a thin metallic member which is provided with a hole adapted for a journal for the axle 5 of the roller 5 and the upper edge is extended forming a shield as shown best in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The screw 7 passes through the hole in the blade and is screwed into a supportingblock 8 and the blade2 is clamped between the head of the screw 7 and block 8- This block 8 is provided with a transverse hole 8 therein in which is mounted the extended end of the support 6 and adapted to move longitudinally therein and it is held in position by means of a set screw 9 screwed into the extended end of the block 8 and its end is adapted to rest against the support 6. This support 6 is provided with a hole 6' which forms a journal for the axle end 5 of the roller It will be noted that the axis of the roller 5 is positioned slightly in advance of the cutting edge of the blade and serves as a guide or support for regulating the thickness of the peel and that this axle end 5" may be adjusted by loosening the set screw 9 and moving the support 6 inwardly and outwardly as desired, it being noted that the cutting edge of a paring knife blade usually wears in a gradual taper from the handle toward the end so that the extended end is the only one that needs adjustment to provide for the wear of the blade.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement but desire to include in the purview of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
It is obvious that with this construction,
there is provided a paring knife with means i said means may be readily removed for sharpening the blade; that it may be adjusted to take up the Wear of the blade and that the device is very simple and economical of construction.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Leters Patent is:
1. A paring knife, including a blade, a handle for said blade, a supporting member secured between the blade and handle on one side and extending at right angles to the blade, a supporting block secured to said blade by means of a screw, a support adj ustably mounted in said supporting block and a revoluble roller interposed between said support and the support at the handle.
2. A paring knife, including a blade, a handle for said blade, a ournal member secured to said blade at the end of the handle, a support secured to said blade near the extended end of said blade, a journal member adjustably mounted for forward and backward movement on said support, and a roller provided with an extended axle at each end positioned in said journal.
3, A paring knife,'including a blade, a handle for said blade, a journal member secured to said blade at the end of the handle, a support secured to said blade near the extended end of said blade, a journal member adjust-ably mounted for forward and backward movement on said support, aroller provided with an extended axle at each end positioned in said journal and means for adjusting the position of the journal forwardly and backwardly near the free end of said blade.
4. A paring knife, including a blade, a handle for said blade, a journal member secured to said blade at the end of the handle, a support secured to said blade near the extended end of said blade, a journal member adj ustably mounted on said support, a roller provided with an extended axle at each end positioned in said journal, means for adjusting the position of the journal near the free end of said blade comprising a block secured to said blade by means of a screw passing through a hole in said blade and a set screw adapted to engage a journal member positioned in a transverse hole in said block.
5, A paring knife, including a blade, a handle for said blade, a journal positioned at the end of said handle on said blade, another journal spaced therefrom on said blade and a roller journaled in said journal members and extending along the cutting edge of the blade and means for adjusting the extended end of said roller forwardly and backwardly relatively to the cutting edge of the blade.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at San Diego, California, this 15th day of September, 1920.
