MASSAGE cons.
Application filed June 1.0, 1922: Serial No. 567,247.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, PHILIP NACH, a citi Zen. of the United States of America, residing at Neirton, in the county of Hancock and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Massage Combs, of which the following is a specification.
he present invention relates to improvements in massage combs adapted for treatment of the scalp in the application thereto of medicaments, tonics, &c., in the form of salves, liquids or pastes.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is comparatively simple in construction an operation, is inexpensive in cost of production, which may be manipulated with i'acility, and is sanitary in its uses and functions.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts involved in the construction of the device whereby the medicine, tonic, or other form of medicament is fed from the container or reservoir in the comb, as will more specifically be set forth.
In the accompanying illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged according to thebest mode I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention. It
will be understood that changes in shape, size, and form may be made and alterations may also be made in the operating parts of the device, within the scope 0t my claims.
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the massage comb of the invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the comb, showing the tines or teeth, except one, in elevation.
Figure 3' is a transverse sectional view at line 3-3 of Figure 2.
The comb may be made up of suitable material as Wood, hard rubber, or metal and is fashioned with a hollow body 1 and hollow handle portion 2 by means'of which it may be grasped in the hand and readily to manipulated. A chamber or reservoir 3 is formed within the interior of the comb body,
and in this instance it is of generally rcctangular shape. Thebottom perforated wall a and the transverse partition 5 may be in- I 6 that is normally drawings I havetegral and secured in usual manner in the hollow comb body to complete the walls of the reservoir inv which the medicament in the form of liquid or paste is stored. If necessary the bottom and partition may be removed, a for cleansing the interior of the reservon, or when removed other forms or shapes of devices may be substituted in lieu of this member on the comb.
At its end remote from the handle 2 the body of the comb is fashioned with a nipple closed by a screw cap 7, or other suitable closure may be utilized. When the cap is removed the liquid, salve, or paste may be passed through the open nipple to fill the interior of the hollow comb body. The perforated bottom wall or. plate 4: is
provided with a suitable number of hollow teeth 8 -t-hatmay be made up of hard rubber or other similar material, andfashioned, preferably with a rounded head 9. The bore of the. tooth entire length with the opening in the head 9 and the opposite end of the tooth is fixed and sealed in the perforated bottom plate or wall. By rounding the heads it will be apparent that the teeth of the comb may be passed over the scalp, or other part of the person, with ease and comfort, and without danger of scratching the skin of the user, or patient.
\Vith the reservoir or chamber 3 filled or partly filled with the salve or paste, the
8 extends throughout its latter is forced through the openings in the hollow teeth by pressure from a pressure plate 10. This plate is made to conform to the interior shape of the reservoir and may have a wear strip or packing gasket around its edges tomake a close fit in the walls of the reservoir and prevent leak of the medicament around the plate.
By means of a lever arm 12, which is located in the upperportion of the hollow comb body, the pressure plate is depressed in the drawings, and to compensatefor the swinging movement of the art, a loose or slotted pivotal connection is made at 13 between the lever arm andplate. A notch 12 may be provided in the partitiono to guide the lever arm, angular and projects mto the hollow handle portion 2. By means of a pivot pin 14:, which passes" transversely. through the handle portion, back of thejpa'rtitionh', the
' lever arm is supported to oscillate, and a channel extension 15, forming a finger piece, is fashioned integral with the arm 12. The finger piece 15 is located in an opening in the wall of the hollow handle, and isroun'ded with its convex face projecting beyond the handle in order that pressure may be ap-.
plied thereto when gripped lightly by the finger. By means of the spring 16 which isafilxed to the finger piece and has a rubbing contact with the inner Wall of thecomb-handle, the finger piece is urged away; from the handle and thisaction tends to hold the pressure plate, through the lever arm '12, out ofpressing action on the, corn tents of the reservoir. It will be apparent however, that when the finger piece 15 is gripped and squeezed into the hollow handle,
tion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-- i
1. The, combination in a massage comb having a, hollow body and comprising a fixed perforated bottom plate and integral end wall, of tubular teeth in said plate, a pressure plate within the body of the comb, a
lever arm pivotally connected to said plate and having a pivot outside the hollow body,
a spring pressed, integral finger-piece ,on
said lever arm, and a hollowhandle portiion forming a housing for said fingerpiece. I
2, The combination in a massage comb comprising a hollow body portion and hollow handle portlon, of a pressure plate in' the body portion, a lever pivoted in the handle portion including an arm projecting into the body portion, a pivotal connection between said lever arm and pressure plate, said lever having a second arm fashioned as a finger piece movable within the hollow handle, and a spring interposed between said finger piece and the hollow handle. 7
t 'In testimony whereof I have aifixed my signature. 7 v
