Be it known that I, RICHARD R. VHITING, a citizen of'the United States, residing in the city of Norwood, in the county of Hamilton and the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in vCardllxhibiting Devices, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to card exhibiting devices wherein a series of exhibits in the form of cards are held in a mechanism for consecutively exposing to view, character or picture representations on their surfaces. In'devices of this character, it has been f heretofore necessary for a person desiring to view both sides of the exhibitsto change his position. Also the casings in which the card exhibiting mechanisms are mounted have been of extremely unsightly appearance and heavy weight and also difficult to handle;
It is the object of my invention to provide a readily portable and compact card exhibiting device, of extremely light weight and of a highly ornamental and symmetrical appearance; further to provide a means whereby exhibits in card form can be viewed on their reverse side as well as their front side without the necessity of the observer changing his position; further to provide a better means of lighting the exhibits; further to provide a more ready and convenient means to operate the card exhibitingl mechanism from the exterior of the casing; further to provide a casing for enclosing the card exhibiting mechanism of great strength and simplicity of construction and also of a highly ornamental and symmetric-al appearance; further to enclose within the casing the greatest number of exhibits in the small.- est possible space thereby effecting great reduction in weight and in the quantity of material employed in its construction; and further to conceal the edges of the material and avoid sharp projections.
My invention'consists in the provision of a readily portable and compact card exhibiting device of extremely light weight and highly ornamental and symmetrical appearance; further in mounting card exhibiting mechanism within a cylindrical casing,

In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated a cylindrical. casing l0 encloses a mechanism for consecutively exposing to view exhibit cards held therein. Thus view cards 1l are clasped to slender elastic arms 12 which are loosely attached to hub 13. rlhe hub is mounted on a shaft i4 which is supported for rotation in bearings l5. The connection of the arm to the hub is such as will permit each arm to have an individual limited movement thereon and in the plane of rotation of the same, but independent thereof. Rotation of the lshaft is had by a ratchet wheel 16 secured thereto and adapted to be engaged by a pawl 17 pivotally mounted on a rockable lever 18 having a bea-ring 19 about the shaft. The pawl is urged toward the ratchet by a spring 20. A retaining pawl 21 pivotally mounted on an extension 22 of one ofthe bearings 15 has a spring, 1
23 urging the same into engagement wit the ratchet wheel. A spring 24 secured vto the casing and tothe roclrable lever normally urges the same in an upward direction.

The e'ect of this retardation is that when the rotary movement of the hub proceeds, a spring tension `is set up in the rotated arm and a continuation of the movement effects finally the forcible release of the retarded arm from the stop 26. This causes said arm under theimpulse of the spring action, to flop at once over to the other side of the gap so that the view next followingbecomes visible for observation4 in like manner.
The cylindrical casing in which the pre-k viously described mechanism is contained j ycomprises a cylindrical wall 30 and side walls 31 preferably-formed of sheet metal rsuch as aluminum. The sidewalls `are attached to the cylindrical walls as by having a curl 32 thereon rolled over a bead 33 yon the cylindrical wall. The cylindrical wall is interrupted to form an opening 34 over which a hood 35 is located. The eye piece 28 is secured tothe outer end of the hood and is `so placed as to be directly at right angles tothe surface of the card when held in a retarded position'. The hood. comprises a rearA wall/36, side walls 37, and removable front wall 38. The .rear wall 36 may be formedyof an extension of the cylindrical wall and is secured to flanges 39 on the side walls. The portion of the cylindrical wall adjacent the removable front wall of the hood has a rectangular groove 40 therein, in which a reinforcing strip `41 is received and secured by rivets 42. The side walls further have inwardlyfextended flanges 43 on which the removable front wall 38 is adapted to rest. The upper end of the hood is closed by a cap 44 having depending lflanges 45 which have beads 46 formed on their lower edges. The cap is received over the endof the hood surrounded by the flanges and secured bvscrews 47 to flanges, 48 formed on the side walls 37'. The cap has apertures 49 therein that have depressions 50 formed about their edges. The depressions form a pocketin which stereoscopic lenses 5l are received.

The eye piece further lenses and the card exhibits are in the form ofstereoscope views, it becomes necessary to employ a septum to `prevent interference of vision. Thus a septum 58 comprises a front plate 59 and a rear brace 60. The front plate has a foot 6l. thereon and the rear brace hasa foot 62 thereon. ltivets 63 jimssing through the feet and the rear wall 36 of the hood. secure the septum thereto.
The removable Vtop wall of the hood may beinthcform ofl a door through which access is had to the interior of the casing and comprises. a sheet 65 having beads 66 formed on the outer edges thereof. The removable doorhas an opening 67 therein about which depressions 68 are formed. A transparency for instance as a glass plate 64 is received in the depression and held inv place by flanges 69 secured to the removable door by rivets 70. The ends of the flanges -may be bent down as shown at 7l to preventy shifting of the glass plate. The removable door is locked in position by a projecting flange 72 secured to the portion of the removable door adjacent the yreinforcement strip 4l. yond the edge of the door, and when the door is placed in position this flange is made to enter under the reinforcement strip and prevents removal. The opposite edge of the door has a lock 73 secured thereto, having a key barrel 74 projecting through a hole 75 therein. A slidable lock bolt 76 of the lock is adapted to be operated by a suitable key inserted in the barrel. The lock bolt is received under one of the beads and flanges of the cap 44. In this manner the removable door is securely locked in place.
The cards are additionally illuminated as by side windows 78. The side windows comprise a circular opening 79 'in the side walls having glass plates 80 held before the same by being received in pockets 81 riveted to the side walls of the cylindrical casing by rivets 82. The pockets are preferably formed of sheet metal and may have their corners bent down as shown at 83 to hold the glass plates in place.
Means is provided whereby the card exhibits can be consecutively thrown in position from the exterior of the casing. Thus the lever 18 has a reduced extension 8:3 thereon, projecting through a slot 86 in the cylindrical wall of the casing directly below the hood. A bell crank 87 pivoted on a pin 88 in a bell crank housing 89 secured to the casing by rivets 90, is adapted to coact with the extension of the rockable lever. The bell crank comprises a contact arm 91 having a contact portion 92 thereon adapted to operate in conjunction with the extension of the arm. The bell crank further has a trigger 93 thereon projecting through a slot 94 in the bell crank housing. The trigger is so formed as to be readily taken hold of by one of the fingers and pulled outward. In this manner the lever is operated to intermittently rotate the shaft 14 and thus consecutively bring the card exhibits to view.
Means is provided whereby the person viewing the cards can observe the pictorial representation on the front thereof, and also such other matter as may be inscrriried ns is accomplished by bringing either the eye piece into the line of vision or rocking the casing about its axis to bring the opening in the removable door into the line of vision. Thus the bearings 15 have anges 98 secured to the side walls 31 by rivets 99. The bearings have extensions thereon that project through holes 101 in the side walls of the casing. Trunnions 102 are secured in the bearings by set screws 103. The cylindrical casing is removably supported on a stand 104, having open end slots 105 in which the trunnions 102 are received. The stand comprises a base 106 and angular brace arms 107 joined at their upper ends. The open end slots are preferably located in the junction of the angular arms.
To hold the casing in such a position as will suit the person viewing the cards, a
round nose pin 110 is secured to a spring f servers line of vision, a rest is secured L thereto as by rivets 116. The rest also serves as a counterweight to counterbalance the excess weight of the hood andl eye piece. The rivets 116 passing through the vertical wall and the cylindrical wall of the casing thus firmly secure the counterweight thereto.
` My improved device is also adapted to be readily rocked for viewing either the backs or fronts of the cards when removed from the stand and placed on a smooth surface such as a table. To this end the casing is adapted to rest on the curls 32 of the cylindrical casing and held in position by the combined counterweight and rest 115. Tn this position the fronts of the cards can be viewed through the stereoscopic eye piece. Should it be desired however, to view the backs of the card exhibits the casing is rocked on the curls against the action of the counterweight 115. The backs of the exhibits are then visible through the glass plate 64 in the removable door 38 of the hood. In this manner the fronts and backs of the card exhibits are brought selectively into the line of vision of the observer.
When it is desired to bring successive views into position the trigger 93 in the housing 89 is pulled outwardly. This movement forces the contact portion 92 of the bell crank 87 downwardly on the lever 1S which in turn actuates the ratchet wheel 16 to rotate the shaft which exposes a succeeding card to view. Y pressure is withdrawn from the trigger, the spring 24 pulls the lever back and places it in position for again operating the ratchet wheel.
In this manner the card exhibits are always in position to be instantly released to expose succeeding subjects. ters the casing and falls upon the card exhibits through the glass 64 secured in the removable door of the hood, as well as the side windows 78 in the casing.

In a card exhibiting device, a cylindrical casing, card exhibits, externally controlled card exhibiting mechanism mounted within said casing adapted to successively expose to view said card exhibits, a window in said casing, an eyepiece in said casing, and rockable means to bring either said window or said eyepiece into the line of vision oit the observer.
3. In a card exhibiting device, card exhibits, a cylindrical casing, externally actuated card exhibiting mechanism. mounted within said casing whereby said card exhibits have both their fronts and backs successively exposed to view, a hood on said casing, an eyepiece on said hood, said hood comprising side walls, a bottom wall, and removable upper wall, an opening in said upper wall, and a transparency closing said opening', 'an end wall on said hood, an eyepiece secured to said end wall, rocha-ble means embodied within said casing, whereby either said eyepiece or said transparency are capable of being brought into line ot vision of the observer, and counterbalancing and supporting means secured to said casing whereby said eyepiece is normally urged into the line of vision of the observer.
4. In a card exhibiting device, a cylindrical casing, comprising side walls, a cylindrical wall, beads on the edges of said cylindrical wall, and curls on said side walls received over said beads whereby said sidewalls are secured to said cylindrical wall, card exhibits, card exhibiting mechanism mounted in said casing adapted to expose to View either the bacls or 'front of said cards successively, bearings secured to said side walls in which said card exhibiting mechanism is mounted, means to rockably support said casing whereby either the fronts or backs of said card exhibits are brought into the line of vision of the observer, and comprising extension on said bearings, trunnions secured in said extensions, a supporting frame, and slots in said supporting frame in which said trunnions are received, positioning means on said frame for said easing, and
comprising depressions in said casing, a spring secured to said frame, and a pin on said spring adapted to coact with said depressions, a rest on said casing, and an overbalance Weight to normally hold said casing in a position to view one side of said card exhibits.
5. In a card exhibiting device, a cylindrical casing, card exhibits, card exhibiting mechanism mounted within said casing whereby said card exhibits are successively exposed to view, external actuating means on said casing for said exhibiting mechanism, a hood on said casing, an eyepiece on said hood so arranged as to view one side of said `card exhibits, said hood havingv an opening therein distanced from said eyepiece, a removable window closing said opening so aranged as to view the other side or said card exhibits, windows in said casing through whichflight is adapted to enter and fall upon said card exhibits, rockable means embodied within said casing comprisinga rounded surface thereon, whereby either said removable window or said eyepiece is brought into the line of vision olf the observer and a foot secured to said casing adapted to act as a counterweight to normally hold said eyepiece in the line of vision of the observer.

In a card exhibiting device, card' exhibits, a cylindrical casing, comprising a cylindrical wall, and a side wall, said cylindrical wall having an opening therein, card exhibiting mechanism mounted within said casing adapted to successively expose to view said card exhibits, windows in said side walls adapted to permit light to enter said casing and fall upon said card exhibits, external actuating means for said card exhibiting mechanism mounted on said casing, a hood received over said opening, and comprising a bottom wall, side walls, and a removable top wall, said removable wall having an opening therein, a transparency closing said opening, locking means to hold said removable wall in place, an eyepiece in said hood `distanced from said removable top wall, rockable means embodiedin said casing, whereby one side of said card exhibits is adapted to be brought into the line of vision through said eyepiece and the other side oi said card exhibits to he brought into the line of vision through said transparency, a 'foot on said casing opposite to said hood to act as an overbalance weight whereby said eyepiece is normally urged into the line of' vision of the observer.
7. In a card exhibiting device, card exhibits, a cylindrical casing, card exhibiting mechanism mounted within said casing adapted to successively expose to view said card exhibits, said casing having an aperture therein, external actuating means for sai-d card exhibiting mechanism, comprising an extension of said card exhibiting mechanism 'projecting through said` aperture, a housing secured to the outside of said casing about saidextension, a bell crank in said housing, a pin secured in said housing on which said bell crank is rockable, a contact on said bell crank adapted to coact with said extension, and a trigger on said bell crank,
whereby said card exhibiting mechanism is operated.
8. In a card exhibiting device, a casing, sterescopic card exhibits, card exhibiting mechanism operatively mounted within said casing, a hood mounted directly on said casing, sterescopic lenses in said hood, a septum mounted intermediate of said card exhibiting mechanism and said sterescopic lenses, and comprising a front section, and an integrally connected brace section, and means to secure said septum to said hood.
9. In a card exhibiting device, a cylindrical casing, comprising side walls, and a cylindrical wall, said cylindrical wall having a light-receiving opening therein, a hood over said opening, and means whereby said hood, said side walls and said cylindrical wall are combinedly secured together.

In a card exhibiting device, a cylindrical casing, comprising side Walls, and a cylindrical wall, said cylindrical wall having an opening therein, a hood mounted over said opening, flanges on said hood, beads on said flanges, beads on said cylindrical Wall, and curls on said side walls received over said rst named beads and said second named beads, whereby said cylindrical wall, side walls and said hood are' combinedly secured together.

In a. card exhibiting device, a cylindrical casing, comprising side walls, and a cylindrical wall, said cylindrical wall having an opening therein, a hood mounted over said opening, and comprising a top wall, side walls and a bottom wall integrally formed with said cylindrical wall, and means whereby said side walls or said hood and said walls 0I" said casing are com-y binedly secured together.
12. In a card exhibiting device, a cylindrical casing, said casing having an opening therein, a hood over said opening, said hood comprising a removable top wall, side walls, and a bottom wall formed by a continuation oit a part of said casing, flanges on said side walls having said bottom wall secured thereto, additional flanges on said side walls, a cap secured to said last named ilanges, and an eyepiece on said cap. l
13. In a card exhibiting device, a cylindrical casing, card exhibiting mechanisms mounted within said casing, said casing having an opening therein, a hood secured to said casing over said opening, said hood comprising a removable top wall, side walls, and a bottom wall, a cap secured over said hood, comprising a horizontal wall, depending flanges on said horizontal wall, received about said hood, apertures in said horizontal wall and depressions about said apertures, lenses received in said depressions, an eyepiece secured to said cap, comprising a light shield, a bottom Wall, and apertures in said bottom wall, and means to secure said eyepiece to'said cap with apertures therein coincident with the apertures in said cap, whereby said lenses are held in said depressions.

In a card exhibiting device, a cylindrical casing, said cylindrical casing having a light-receiving opening therein, and a hood mounted over said opening, said hood comprising a. bottom wall, side walls and end wall, and a removable top wall, and depressed flanges on said side walls whereon said removable top wall is carried, and locking means to hold said top wall in place.
15. In a card exhibiting device, a casing, stereoscopic card exhibits, card exhibiting mechanism operatively mounted within said casing, a hood on said casing, stereoscopic lenses in said hood, a septum mounted intermediate of said card exhibiting mechanism and said stereoscopic lenses, and comprising a front section, and an itegrally connected brace section, and means to secure said septum to said hood.
16. In a card exhibition device, a casing, a hood thereon, stereoscopic lenses mounted in said hood, a V shaped septum in said hoodvin advance of said lenses, and means to secure said septum to said hood.
17. In a card exhibiting device, a casing, a hood secured thereon, comprising a top wall, side walls, an end wall, and a bottom wall, lenses in said end wall, a septum comprising a front plate facing said lenses, and an angular brace extending downwardly from an integrally formed with the upper end of said plate, and means to secure said septum to said bottom wall.
