To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I` FRANCIS W. DOLIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moorestown, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencils, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pencils and. pertains particularly to magazine pencils and to Sencils for carrying extra lead.
ne'of the objectsof the invention is to provide a compact simple device which 'will be durable and easily operated7 and at the same time inexpensive to manufactures.
The features of the invention provide for the utmost simplicity in the arrangementand construction of parts, thus reducing the chance of breakage and binding of the parts to a minimum. The relative simplicity vof the parts makes it possible to dispense 'with the need" for special manufacturing machinese.
The lfeatures of the invention provide numerous advantages over the known forms of pencils. In the present construction, whenever the front cap or tip is olf for reloading, the amount of reserved lead in the y bine magazme may be'seen because such extra leads project up beyond the barrel 'end and are finally` covered by the tip when the latter is attached to the barrel.
Another important advantage results from the peculiar spring feed feature which permits a cushioned effect, and prevents the breaking of lead, and reduces to a minimum the tiring effect experienced by the writer after using a pencil for along time in continuous writing. l
Another lfeature is the use of a transparent cover for the pencil and the particular way in Vwhich both end covers co-,op'erate with the sleeve to complete the structure;
The particular configuration and relative position of the parts isset forth in the following specification' and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

Referring in detail to the drawing, 1 indi'- cates the barrel of a pencil of the type described enlarged considerably in order to l more clearly show the relative positions of the parts. ,1a indicates the rear end of the barreland 1b indicates the frontend of the barrel,.and these ends are provided with the A respective threaded outer portions 1c and 1d.

The rear face'of. the cap 2 is' indicated at 2", and centrally through this rear face is an opening 2, the purpose of which will b described. The opposite end of the cap 2 providesan annular shoulder or flange surface 2d having a thickness the same as the wall of the cap. The front end is provided with ascrew threaded fastening vcap 3 which has a rear portion 3a with threads adapted to engage the threads 1d Aof the barrel. Tapering forwardly from the portion 3, the inner walls of the tip are indihca'ted at 3b and this tapered portion extends into a more sharply inclined part indicated at 3c. The rear end of the cap is provlded 4with the square cut shoulder orv annular Hange-surface indicated at 3d corresponding to the shoulder 2d of the rear end cap. The extreme tip 'of the pencil is indicated at 3e and a restricted bore for providing a tight sliding fit for the lead is indicated at 3f. Between the point 3 and the bore 3f, there is provided a cylindrical portion having the walls 3g which provides a loose 'sliding' fit for the central guide tube as will be described. Between the 'walls 3g and immediately adjacentthe entrance to the bore 3f is the annular inclined surface 31 against which the central tube is adapted -to restl in order to position the tube centrally and bring the bore of the4 tube into alignment withy the bore 3f.
A transparent sleeve 4 of celluloid or other suitable material-is loosely fitted over the length of the barrel 1. and held in position bythe flange surfaces 2dand 3d. Preferably the cylinder 4 has walls of thesame thickness as the width of the flanges, so that the assembled pencil may provide a smooth eX- terior. Between the barrel 1 and the-cylinder 4 there may be inserted suitable advertising material for display through the cylinder 4, or designs for artistic effect or advertising material may be carved on the outer surface of the barrel 1 and thus made visible vided with a slot through the wall theref vet through the cylinder 4 although protected from actual wear by the outer transparent covering. j
At the extreme end of the pencil is the actuating end piece 5 which is formed, 1n
the pencil illustrated, as a cylindrical caphaving an end partition 5a positioned against the rear face 2b of the cap 2. The outer end of the cylinder 5 is turned inward or otherwise suitably provided with some gripping surface as indicated at 5" to engage and hold an eraser. The partition 5a is provided with a central opening to be in alignment with and correspond to the o ening 2c in the cap 2 for the reception o the `rear end of the actuating screw andthe securing of an end between the plates 5 and in the-space 5c1 as will be descrlbed.
A central partition 6 is securely fixed within the barrel by brazing, soldering or suitable means, and divides the inner bore of the barrel into va front and rear chamber, the front chamber being a magazine for extraleads, and the rear chamber containing the actuating screws. The partition 6 has an axial opening 6 for the reception of the' guide tube as will be described.
The guide tube 7 is also rigidly mounted 4within the opening 6'L kof the partition 6 by brazing or soldering, and is thus fixed with respect to the barrel. The tube 7 has the extreme front end 73L projecting beyond the end of the barrel and adaptedl to engage the inclined wall 3 of the tip. Thevrear portion ofthe tube on the opposite side of the partition 6 is indicated at 7b and is proof at 7c, this slot extending from the rear end of the guidel tube substantially Iall of the way to the partition.
The actuating lhelically coiled spring screw member 8 substantially fills the diam-,-
eter of the bore of the barrel and extends the full length of -the rear chamber. It will be notedy thatl the member 8 is free to revolve within the circular walls ofthe barrel; that the lateral portions of the spring 8 are loosely positioned within the barrel, and that they coils or turns of the member 8 are positioned apart a distance substantially as great as the cross section of the material of the spring.l The extreme rear end 8P of the member 8 extends through the opening 2 and is bent at right-angles to the longitudinal axis of. the spring 8 and fixed within the actuating end piece 5 bymember 8 or the front end thereof is indicated at 8, which end normally should be located relatively close to the partition 6 so that the partition would prevent the actuated screw' from becoming unfastened from the coils of the screw 8.
The combined actuated screw and plunger 9 is illustrated in its removed position in Fig. 2 and in its assembled position with the other parts in Fig. 1. This structure is peculiar in that the plunger rod is continuous and formedv in one piece with the actuated screw portion 9a. The member is inserted in the rear end of the barrel, when the cap 2 and actuating piece 5 with the. actuating screw are removed, by itting the rod 9 into the slotted guide tube 7". A right-angle shoulder 9b extends from the straight rod 9 to the helical turn of the actuated screw part 9, this portion 9b being illustrated in 'Fig 3. The right-angle shoulder 9b extends through the open slot 7c and 'is prevented fromturning by the walls of this slotted opening. Comparing the respective size and pitchof the turns of the helical screw portions 8 and 9L as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it will be noted that these dimensions are substantially the same as' may be compared by observing the distance A-B in Fig. l with the distance C-D in Fig. 2. Referring to Fig. lit will be noted that the turn of the member 9 substantially fills the space between the adjacent turns of the member 8. i
The structure Yis assembled by first inserting a combined plunger 9 and actuated screw ,9L within the slotted tube so that thek shoulder 9h` extends through vthe slot. .The rear cap 2 is then screwed into placeby bringing'the end 8 of the actuating screw into screw threaded engagement with the coils 9n and completing this turning movef` ment until vthe end 8"? is moved to its extreme position near thev partition 6. The

In a pencil, the combination of a barrel, an actuating end piece at one end of said barrel, an actuating helically coiled spring screw member rotatably mounted within said barrel and having one end thereof fixed to said actuating end piece, the coils of said spring member 'substantially filling the bore of said barrel and being free to turn therein,
and having adjacent coils spaced apart,.and.
a unitary combined reciprocating plunger and screw within said barrel, and having as one portion thereof a straight rod and as another portion an actuated helical screw member slidably mounted within said barrel forl longitudinal movement, the coils ofl said actuated member. being substantially of the same curvature and pitch as the actuating spring member ,and fitting between adjacent turns of thesame, said straight rodbeing positioned axially and centrally with respect to the helix of said actuated screw member.
3. In a pencil the combination of a barrel, an actuating end pieceat one end of said barrel, an actuating helically coiled spring j screw member rotatably mounted within sai barrel and having one end thereof fixed to` said actuating end piece, the coils of said vspring member substantially filling the bore of said barrel and being free to turn-therein,l and having adjacent coils spaced apart, and a unitary combined reciprocating plunger and screw within said barrel, and having as one portion thereof a straight rod and as another ortion an actuated helical screw member s idably mounted within said barrel for longitudinal movement, the coils of said actuated member being substantially of the same curvature. and pitch as th'e actuating spring member and fitting between adja-A cent turns of the same, said straight rod be` ing positioned axially and centrally with respect to the helix of said actuated screw member, and having one end continued substantially-at right-angles to said actuated screw member and rigidly fixed with respect thereto.
4. In a pencil, the. combination of a bar` rel, an actuating end piece at one end of said barrel, an actuating helically coiled spring screw lmember rotatably mounted within said barrel and having one end thereof fixed to said actuating end piece, the coils of said spring member substantially filling the bore of said barrel and being free to turn therein, and having adjacent coils spaced apart, a fixed tube centrally mounted `within said barrel and having a rear portion thereof extending withinsaid actuating s ring and slotted for'a substantial portion o its length within said actuating spring, and a unitary combined reciprocatin plunger land screw within said barrel, andIia-ving as one portion thereof a straight rod and as another portion an actuated helical screw member, slidablyv mounted within said barrel for longitudinal movement, the coils of said actuated-member being substantially of the same curvature and pitch asthe actuating spring member and fitting between adjacent turns of the same.

In a pencil, the combination of a barrel, an actuating end piece at one end of said barrel, an actuating helically coiled Spring screw member rotatably mounted within said barrel and havingonel end thereof fixed to said actuating end piece, the coils of said spring member substantially filling the bore of said barrel and being free to turn therein, and having adjacent coils spaced apart, a barrel cap mounted on the end of said barrel and positioned between said actuating end axially through said openlng, said extension being piece. v

In a pencil, the combination of a barrel rigidly secured to 'said actuating end having the bore thereof divided transversely by a 4partitioninto twio main chambers coni sisting of a rear chamber and a forward chamber, and 'an actuating end piece at the .ist l ber being provided with a longitudinally ex.
tending slot through the wall thereof, an actuating helically coiled spring screw member vrotatably mounted wit-hin said rear chamber and encircling said slotted tube, and a unitary combined reciprocating plunger and actuated screw within said barrel having as one portion thereof, a straight rod mounted within said guide tube, and as another portion, an actuated helical screw member encircling the Slotted portion of said tube, the coils of said actuated member being substantially of the -same curvature and pitch as the actuating spring member and fitting between adjacent turns of the same. In a pencil, the combination of a barrel having the bore thereof divided transversely by a partition into two main chambers consisting' of a rear chamber and a forward chamber, an actuating end piece at the rear end of said barrel, a barrel rear end cap def tachably mounted on said barrel between said actuating end piece and said barrel, a
guide tube extending centrally the length of said forward chamber and through' said partition and projecting centrally into said rear chamber, the portion of said tube in said rear chamber being provided with a longitudinally extending slot through the wall thereof, the space in Isaid forward 4cham'ber around said guidetube constituting a magazine for extra leads, a barrel forward end cover and pencil tip having a central bore, ythe walls of which are in alignment with the bore of said guide tube, an actuating` helically coiled spring screw member rotatably mounted Within said rear chamber and encircling said slotted tube, and a unitary combined reciprocating plunger and actuated screw within said barrel having as one portion thereof, a Straight rod mounted within said guide tube, and as another portion, an actuated helical screw member encircling the slotted portion of said tube, the'coils of said actuated member being of substantially the same curvature and pitch as the actuating spring member and fitting between adjacent turns of the same.
