To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY J. YAonR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds; and T do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention provides a collapsible bed and spring designed chiefly for automobile touring and adapted to be reduced to compact form for convenience of carrying and handling, and which may be readily set up or taken down and which is durable, strong and light, and embodies a spring bottom capable of being readily tensioned.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention. 1

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of'the drawings by like reference characters.
The bed is essentially all metal and comprises similar or like side rails, a folding head section, a folding and detachable foot section and a detachable spring bottom capable of being rolled or folded into compact form. The bed. when set up is braced or stayed in practically every direction to prevent its casual collapsing.
The side rails are of similar or like forma tion each comprising right angularly disposed flanges 1 and 2 the latter occupying a horizontal position when the bed is set up and the flange 1 being disposed vertically. The horizontal flange 2 terminates short of the ends of the vertical flange 1. The, vertical flange 1 is provided at its foot end with a notch 3 in its lower edge and its head end is provided with an upwardly extending hook extension 4 which is adapted to engage a transverse member 5. A brace 6 is pivoted to the vertical flange 1 near the foot end thereof and the free end of the brace 6 is bent laterally and notched in its lower edge as indicated at 7. Each of the side rails is formed of a strip of metal of proper gauge bent intermediate its longitudinal edges to form the flanges 1 and 2.
The head section comprises similar or like legs which are pivotally connected to the vertical flanges 1 of the side rails. Each of'the legs comprises flanges 8 and 9 disposed relatively at a right angle to each other and an inner flange 10 forming a foot to prevent the legs from sinking into the ground when the bed is set up for use. The upper inner corners of the flanges 9 are made rounding to permit of the legs folding into the plane of the side rails when the bed is collapsed.
Cross braces 11 are pivoted at their upper ends to the upper ends of the flanges 8 of the legs and their lower ends are bent laterally and notched to engage openings 12 near the lower ends of the flanges 8.
Other braces 13 are pivoted at their lower ends to theflanges 9 and their upper ends are bent laterally and notched to engage openings 14 in the vertical flanges 1 of the side rails. It will thus be understood that the legs are braced laterally and longitudinally and remain fixed when the parts are properly adjusted,
The foot sectioncomprises uprights which are similar in construction and formed in a manner corresponding to the legs of the head section. Each of the uprights consists of flanges 14L and 15 having a right angular arrangement. An angle cross piece 16 connects the upper ends of the uprights and is pivoted to the flanges 14 thereof. Vertical slots 17 are formed in the flanges 1 1 to receive the notched ends of the side rails when the parts are assembled. Braces 18 pivoted at their upper ends toa transverse member 19 have detachable connections at their lower ends with the flanges 14c of the uprights. It will thus be understood that the uprights are braced both laterally and lon itudinally by the respective braces 18 and 6.
The transverse member 19 consists of an angle bar which when in operative position has one flange horizontal and the other flange vertical. The vertical flange of the member 19 has its opposite end portions bent to provide hooks 21 which engage the foot ends of the flanges 2 of the side rails. Braces 22 pivoted to the horizontal flange or the member 19 detachably engage the vertical flanges 1 of the side rails thereby staying the angles formed between said side rails and thefoot section.
The spring bed bottom 23 is of woven wire and reinforcements are disposed at opposite ends thereof and the wire comprising the bottom is woven there around. The reinforcement 24E at the head of the bed consists of a rod whereas the reinforcement 25 at the foot of the bed consists of a bar. The reinforcement 25 is secured to the horizontal flange of the member 19 by suitable fastenings 26 such as rivets or bolts. The trans verse member 5 consists of a tube having a slot along one side through which an end portion of the bed bottom 23 passes. The member 5 is preferably formed of a metal strip bent into tubular form with its longitudinal edge portion spaced apart a distance to form the slot through which an end portion 01 the bed bottom 2-3 passes. The reinforcement 24: is disposed within the tubular member 5 and is of such diameter as to prevent its withdrawal through the slots. Spreading of the member 5 is prevented by means of ties 27 which extend dian'ietrically through the member and have their project-- .ing ends upset. -T he n'ieinber 5 is adapted to be turned to wind a portion of the spring bed bottom 23 thereon and properly tension the same. Any suitable means may be employed for turning the member 5 and as shown a spanner 28 is fitted to an end portion thereof. A pin 29 pivotally connects the spanner to the member 5 and supplements the action of the fastenings 27 in preventing spreading or opening of the part 5. The member 5 is provided at opposite ends with a plurality of openings 30 which cooperate with dogs 31 to prevent backward rotation of the member after the same has been turned to properly tension the bed bottom 23. The dogs 31 are pivoted to the flanges 1 of the side rails at the head end thereof.
It will be understood from the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawings'that the bed may be reduced to compact form for convenience of carrying and handling and may be easily set up when required for use and when assembled iis firmly braced and stayed in every direction to preclude collapsing or' unpleasant play Or movement. The head section is set in some distance from the extremities of the side rails to admit of the latter overhanging the running board of an automobile thereby economizing space and enabling a canopy of: minimum length being used for enveloping the bed when the same is adjusted for use.
The uprights of the head and foot sections are provided near their lower ends with openings 32 for receiving fastenings where by the canopy (not shown) may be made secure when in position. The several braces are substantially alike in construction and are pivoted at one end and adapted to make detachable connection at the opposite end which is bent laterally and notched whereby to prevent displacement when the parts are properly adjusted.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is In a folding bed of the character specified, side rails comprising vertical and horizontal flanges the latter having their lower edges notched near one end, slotted uprights adapted to receive the notched end portions of the side rails, a transverse member comprising horizontal and vertical flanges, the latter having its end portions bent to engage the horizontal flanges of the side rails and braces between the uprights and side rails and transverse member and braces between the transverse member and side rails.
