UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT O.
RUSSELL, 0]! LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, AND LAWRENCE J. EYLEB, OF
DAYTON, OHIO.
SPADE GRIP FOR MACHINE GUNS.
Application filed June 9,
Toall'whomitma concern:
Be it known t at we, HERBERT 0'. Bus- SELL and LAWRENCE J. Erma, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Los Angeles and Dayton, in the counties of Los Angeles and Montgomery and States of Cahfornia and Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spade Grips for Machine Guns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates machine guns and trigger mechanism of a machine gun.
The particular object of to provide in conjunction with the spade grip and handle of a machine gun, a trigger operable 'by the fore finger of the hand which grips the gun thereby producing greater accuracy of fire and leaving the 1e and of the gunner free for other work.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings;
Fi re 1 is a fragmentary side elevation part y in section of a machine gun illustratin t e spade grip and trigger mechanism.
igure 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fi ure 3 is an end view thereof.
1 designates a machine gun and 2 the thereof having the usual hanto spade grips for relates particularly to a for operating the sear the invention is 5 ads grip e 3. In carrying out the present invention, we
arrange a trigger 4 in the upper portion of the space within the spade grip and extend a trigger guard 5 across said space for safety. The trigger is mounted on a pivot 6 and the forward portion or arm 7 of the trigger is laterally oif-set as indicated at 8 in Figures 2 and 3, such off-set portion of the trigger cooperating with a plunger 9 which is arranged in the path of the trigger arm 8 and which is retracted to the normal position shown in Figure 1 by means of a retracting spring 10.
The opposite end of the plunger 9 cooperates with and actuates a transmission lever 11 which is mounted upon a pivot 12 in the lower part of the gun. The inner end of the transmission lever 11 cooperates with the short arm 13 of a scar operating lever 14 mounted on a pivot 15. The extremity of the sear operating lever 14 is arranged in cooperative relation to a scar operating slide 16 the operation of which will cause a corresponding operation of thesear slide of the gun.
It will be noted that the trigger is incor porated with the spade grip in such a way that it may be operated readily by the fore finger of the hand which directs the aim so tfhat the other hand of the operator will be ree.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1. The combination with spade grip of a machine gun, of a trigger pivoted in the upper portion thereof, a plunger in the path of said trigger and adapted for actuation thereby, a sear operating lever, and a transmission lever having one arm in the path of said plunger and the other arm in cooperative engagement with the sear operating lever.
23. The combination with spade grip of a machine gun. of a trigger pivoted in the upper portion thereof, a ring retracted plunger in the path of said trigger and adapted for actuation thereby, a sear operating lever, and a transmission lever having one arm in cooperative engagement with the sear operating lever.
3. The combination with spade grip of a machine gun, of a trigger pivoted in the upper portion thereof, a plunger in the path of said trigger and adapted for actuation thereby. said plunger being ofiset'to one side of the center of the gun, a sear operating lever. and a transmission lever having one arm in the path of said plunger and the other arm in cooperative engagement with the sear operating lever,
4. The combination with spade grip of a machine gun, of a trigger pivoted in the upper portion thereof. a trigger guard bounding the trigger operating space, a plunger in the path of said trigger and adapted for actuation thereby. a scar operating lever. and a transmission lever hav ing one arm in the path of said plunger and the other arm in cooperative engagement with the sear operating lever.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signa tures.
HERBERT O. RUSSELL. LAWRENCE J. EYLER.
