UNITED STATES 1,436,463 PATENT OFFICE.
MYER S. SILVER, OF ALLSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
STOCKING PROTECTOR.
Application filed February 5, 1921. Serial No. 442,696.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MYER S. SILVER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stocking Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shoes and the prime object is toprovide an article adapted to be worn inside of a shoe, such article consisting of a sole having a vamp and a heel piece that serve as means for preventing undue wear on the stocking and foot. The article forming the subject matter of this invention is. formed from soft and flexible leather, and its vamp has a series of perforations arranged over the line of separation between the toes, and thesole is also provided with a similar series of perforations which serve as ventilating means.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent, from the following detailed description, which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1, is a plan view of my invention, the heel piece being shown in section;
Fig. 2, is a ve'rtlcal section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Fig. 3, is a detail plan of the toe portion of the sole;
Fiigi. 4=,-is an end view, illustrating the bee Fig. 5, is a detail plan of the tip of the blank from which the vamp isformed, showin the slit therein,
ig. 6, is a view showing the slit in the heel piece blank, and
Fig. 7 ,is a section view similar to 2,
' showing the heel piece omitted.
' a series of perforations 11, that are arra Referrin now to the drawings, the device comprises a sole 10, formed of the desired contour to fit properly within a shoe, and this sole is provided at its toe end witlli e in four rows, so that they lie beneath the hue of separation between the toes.
Stitched to the edge of the sole 10, 1s a vamp 12. This vamp isdesigned to cover the toes, and the portion thereof that hes over the larger toes is somewhat shorter in length than the portion lying over the smaller toes. formed in the, vamp, these'perforations bethe device is being worn.
A series of-perforatio'ns 13, is
ingsimilar to the perforations 11 in the sole, and when the device is in use they are positioned directly over the line of separation between the toes, and together with the perforations in the sole, serve as ventilating means, as will be readily understood.
The vamp 12 is stitched to the sole 10, as shown, and for the purpose of enabling it to be given the desired form during the stitching operation, its front edge is slitted as shown at 14. The slit 14.- is in the nature of a V-shaped notch having divergent edges as shown by Fig. 5, and when the vamp is being attached to the sole, the divergent edges of the slit are drawn together and held closed by means of stitches 15. This construction enables the top of the vamp to be arched so that it will form a pocket for the reception of the toes and the shape of such pocket is such that the toes will not be rubbed, when A heel-piece 16 formed from suitable soft and flexible leather can, if so desired be stitched to the rear or heel portion of the sole 10, as shown in Figures 1, 2, and 4. The purpose of this heel-piece is to prevent undue rubbing of the heel against the heel portion of a shoe, however, in some cases when this action does not occur, it isnot necessary, and therefore in Fig. 7, the device is shown with the heel-piece omitted. The heel-piece 16 isformed from a single piece of material, and one longitudinal edge thereof is stitched to the sole 10, as shown. For the purpose of enabling the heel-piece tobe given the desired-form during the stitching operation, its free upper horizontal edge is slittcd as shown at 17 so that a V-shaped notch having divergent edges is formed, and these edges are drawn together and closed by stitches 18. This construction is such that while the walls of the heel-piece are substantially vertical, they are flexed sufficiently to coincide with the shape of the heel receiving portion of a shoe.
From the foregoing. description, it will be noticed that I have produced an improved device which is simple in construction, and thoroughly reliable and efficient in its function.
What I claim as new is I 1. A device of the class -described', comprising a sole having a series of ventilating perforations extending longitudmally arranged on the lines of separationbetweenthe toes, and a vamp stitched to said sole, said vamp being designed to cover .the toes and having its portion that lies over the smaller toes longer in length than the portion that lies over the larger toes, saidvamp also having a series of ventilating perforations extending longitudinally arranged on the lines of separation between the toes, as and for the purpose specified. v
'2. ,An insole stocking protector comprising a sole member and a vamp secured to the sole, said vamp having its edge at the front thereof provided with a V-shaped slit whereby the body thereof is made to assume an arched shape when the edges of the slit are drawn together, said sole member and vamp having each a series of ventilating perfo-rations extending longitudinally thereof and arranged on the lines of separation between the toes.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
