Description

Dec. 15, 1.936- LA Pon'bl: VAN SANT 2,054,507
REMEDIAL/FOOTWEAR original Filed Juiy 25, 193s la@ Vd A HIS ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 15, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application July 25, 1933, Serial No. 682.146
Renewed April 20, 1936 s claims.- (cl. 36-71) 'I'his invention relates to certain novel improvements in remedial footwear, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly eiiicient in use and economical in manufacture.
Another object of this invention is to provide a new article of footwear in the form of a device for alleviating and remedying diseased'areas and conditions of the human foot such as are caused, for example, by corns, callouses, and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new article of footwear for alleviating corns, callouses, and the like by diverting the weight of-the body olf the diseased area and onto the healthy area of the foot.
Other obiects'will appear hereinafter.
'Ihe invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed. l
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying .drawing showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
. Fig. 1 is a top plan view showing the new device with the parts thereof assembled;
Fig. 2 is a. longitudinal sectional view on line 2-2 in Fig. 1;'
Fig. 3 is afragmentary longitudinal sectionalv view on line 3--3 in Fig. 1;
Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are perspective detail views of he several inserts embodied in the invention; an
Fig. 'l is a perspective view showing the insole and subsole embodied inthe device.
A preferred embodiment of the new device; is shown in the drawing and includes a flexible subsole I0, which may be made of leather, liber, or the like, and is adapted to be Inserted into an article of footwear, such as II.
'I'he new device also includes an insole I2, which may be made of liber, leather, or the like. This insole I2 is attached to the upper side of the subsole I0 by means of a tongue Il which is cut out ofthe toe portion of the -insole I2 and which is adhesively` or otherwise secured to the upper side of the subsole I0; thereby providing a' 55 foot, which latter area is distributed over the cut-out or recessed area Il in the toe portion of entire area of the upper surface of the insole I2 .excepting the cut-out area Il. In this manner the pain incidental to pressure on the diseased area is relieved and the diseased condition in time remedied.
By the same principle of alleviating and remedying the diseased foot condition by throwing the` weight of the body off from the diseased area onto the healthy area of the foot, a diseased condition such as, for example, a corn or a callous 10 on the bottom of the great toe, may be remedied by providing a cut-out portion I5 in the toe portion of the insole I2 and by adhesively or otherwise attaching the tongue I6 formed by such cutout portion to the subsole I0 which is shorter in 15 length than the insole. I2 and extends over about three-fourths of the length of the insole I2; the subsole III ending rearwardly of the front end or toe portion of the insole I2.
The new device also includes a series of ino serts I1, I8, and I9, each of which is longer than the other, in the order named. Inserts Il and I9 may be detachably attached to the subsole I Il and adjustably positioned thereon between'the insole .I 2 andthe subsole vI Il by means of separable fasteners each including a male element 20 attached to the insert and a female element 2| attached to the insole or vice versa.
The insert I 8 has female fastener elements 22 attached thereto so that it may be inserted be- 30 tween the inserts I'I and I9 if desired: in which event the male fastening elements 20 von the insert I1 are secured to the female fastening elements 22 on the insert I8.
Each of the inserts I'I, I8, and I9 has a cut- 35 out portion 23 formed in the toe portion by inwardly recessing the transverse front' edge 24 thereof. In use, these cut-out portions 23 are registered or aligned with the cut-out portion I4 below the diseased area of the foot. 40
If desired'a portion of one or both side edges o f the combined insole I2, subsole I0, and inserts Il, I8 and I9, may be recessed, as at 25, so as to alleviate pressure on a diseased area of the foot, such as a corn, at that point. While I have illustrated and described the pre- A ferredl form of construction for carrying my in- 'vention into effect, this is capable of variation f and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, 'but desire to availmyself of such variations and modications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus vdescribed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: A,
1. A remedial device for insertion into an article of footwear, comprising a flexible subsole and a exible insole for attachment to the upper side of the subsole; said insole having a cut-out portion providing a recess adapted to receive a diseased area of the i'oot and said cut-out portion providing a tongue attached to the said subsole; said device including an insert arranged between the said subsole and the said insole and including a toe portion having a portion cut out of its transverse front edge providing a recess, and said recess being registered with the first-named recess.
2. A remedial device for insertion into an article o! footwear, comprising a ilexible subsole and a flexible insole for attachment to the upper side of the subsole; said insole having a cut-out portion providinga recess adapted to receive a diseased area of the toot and said cut-out portion providing a tongue attached to the said subsole;
said device including an insert arranged between the said subsole and the said insole and including a toe-portion having a portion cut out of its transverse iront edge providing a recess, and said recess being registered with the Jirst named recess; and means for detachably attaching the said insert to, and for adjustably positioning the same on, the said subsole. Y
3. A remedial device for insertion into an article of footwear, comprising a flexible subsole and a exible insole for attachment to the upper side of the subsole; said insole having a cut-out portion providing a recess adapted to receive a diseased area of the foot and said cut-out portion providing a tongue attached to the said subsole; said device including a series of inserts arranged between the said insole and the said subsole and each of said inserts having a portion cut out of its transverse front edge providing a recess and said recesses being registered with the rstnamed recess.
