To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that we, Ann AIKDO on AGUIAP. and Barren VALons Arron-rive, both citizens of the Republic of Cuba, and residents of Habana, Cuba, and whose post-office address of both is #271A Avenida de la Republica, Habana, Cuba, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Aparatus for Bending Tubes, Rails, and Similar Metal Pieces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus for bending pipes, rails and similar metal pieces and its main object is to provide a simple mechanism for cold-bending tubes or pipes, rails, plates of any section, etc, with high eificiency and at the desired angle.
An advantage of the invention is to effect the operation of bending the said tubes and metal pieces without exerting on them an injurious action that may deform them, thus being possible to bend steel tubes without depriving them of the bluing with which they are generally provided.
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus whose construction permits it to bend metal pieces of different transverse sections, such as tubes, rails, etc, by means of the simple substitution of removable bending members adapted to the form of such sections.
T he invention is described with reference to the figures of the annexed drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus forming the subject-matter of this invention.
Fig. 2 is an upper plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of said apparatus.
Fig. 4t is a cross vertical section on line H, of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a detailed view showing the form of bending members used for bending tubes and bars of circular cross section.
Fig. 6 is a detail view showing the form of the bending members used for bending plates of rectangular cross-section.
Fig. 7 is a detailed view showing the form of the bending members used for bending plates or beams of angular transverse section; and
Fig. 8 is a detailed view showing the form of the bending members used for bending rails or l-beams.
The apparatus comprises a working platform or bench 1 supported on legs 2 secured together by a bracket 2, said bench, as illustrated in the drawings, being of rectangular form with an end extension of curved edges 1.
At the center of the bench there is a hole through which is rotatably mounted a short vertical shaft 4: having fixed two col lars 5 one on the upper face and the other immediately below the lower face of bench l to hold securely shaft 4 with respect to the bench. On the projecting upper portion of shaft 4: is mounted a collar wheel 6 bearing on the upper face of the bench presenting recess 6 at its lower face for lodging the upper collar 5 and thus permit the free rotation of shaft t. Said wheel is fixed to the bench by means of a vertical pin or screw 7. Shaft 4: terminates on a portion of reduced section a threaded at its ends and through which fits and is fixed by a nut 8 screwed on the threaded end of portion 4; a horizontal arm 9 provided at its central part with an elongated slot 10. Through the slot 10 of arm 9 is mounted a trunnion 11 which carries pivotally beneath the arm 9 a collar wheel 12 of less diameter than the wheel 6 and arranged in plan almost in contact with the upper face of bench 1. Trunnion 11 is adapted to slide along slot '9 and to be fixed at any point along the same by means of a securing of nut and washer 13 screwed at its upper threaded end.'
iransversely to bench 1 are provided three elongated slots 14, 15 and 16, the lattor of less length, and parallelly spaced apart and through any one of which is mounted a bolt 17 whose upper threaded end passes up through the central opening of a channelled wheel of small diameter 18 both parts being secured by a nut 19 screwed on the projecting threaded end of bolt 17.
On the lower portion of shaft 4 projecting beneath bench 1 immediately below the lower collar 5 is fixed a bevel pinion 20 by means of a wedge 21 and said pinion meshes at right angle with another bevel pinion 22 fixed on a horizontal rotatable shaft 23 transversally to the bench between journals of hanging supports 2 lfixed beneath bench 1. Q'oposite to pinion 22 is wedged in said shaft 23 another bevel pinion 25 meshing at right angle with a bevel pinion 26 wedged on an end of a horizontal shaft 9.? longitudinally to the bench and beneath the same, on journals of pending supports 28 fixed beneath bench On the opposite end of this shaft projecting out of the bench is fixed a large gear wheel 29 which meshes with a gear wheel of less diameter 3O fixed to a horizontal driving shaft 31 parallel with shaft 27 longitudinally to the bench and rotatable on bearings arranged on brackets 32 exteriorly fixed to a side of the bench. At one end of this shaft adjacent to wheel 30 is fixed a lever wheel 33 for imparting motion toshaft 31 and which wheel has annexed an idle pulley 34 in case it is desired to use any mechanical engine.
The operation of this apparatus is as follows z-Assuming that it is desired to bend a tube 35 such as represented in Fig. 2, the wheel 18 acting as hearing to an end of the tube to be bended, is set through one of the slots 14:, 15 and 16 according to the degree of curvature desired, and in the case illustrated the bearing wheel 18 is shown fixed on a point along the slot 16 which as it is obvious is the one used for the closer curves. The wheel 12 is approached to the bearing wheel 6 sliding same along the slot 10 of arm 9 to adapt it to thediameter of tube 35. Tube 35 is then placed in the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 and upon imparting motion to the arm wheel 33 this motion will be transmitted through the differential system of gears to shaft etwhich has fixed the arm 9, the same carryingthe idle wheel 12 in a planetary manner around the wheel 6 in the direction indicated by the arrows in said figure, bending the tube 35 against the bearing wheel 6 as shown in full line in said Fig. 2.
\Vit-h this apparatus can be used jointly an outfit of interchangeable bending members such as the ones illustrated in Figs. 6, 7 and 8 of the drawings, substituting with them only the collar wheel (Sand 12 which have been described and are illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. Thus, in case of bending a rectangular plate it will be used the bending members such as illustrated in Fig. 6 that is, Wheels of a single flange 36 and 36 between which is adapted the plate 37 to be bended.
In case of bending a plate or beam of angular section, the wheels used in place of wheels 6 and 12 will have its rims as per the confi uration shown in Fig. 7 presenting an anguTar flange 38 and 38 respectively between which is inserted the plate 39 to be bended.
And finally, if it is desired to bend an I-beam or rail will be used members as those illustrated in Fig. 8 comprising wheels presenting the central part 4:0 and 40 re spectively of its rims, beveled recesses and projections 41 and 41 adjacent thereto terminating in vertical flanges 42 and 42, being adapted between both the section of an I-beam or rail 43 which is to be bended.
It isobvious that these bending members can vary indefinitely in section or contour so as to be adapted to the section or contour of the various pieces which are to be bended, as wellas certain modifications can be made in the construction described Without departing from the spirit of the invention, which is as pointed out in the appended claim.
lVhat we claim is An apparatus for bending tubes, rails and the like, comprising a bench, a vertical rotatable shaft mounted through the same and provided with two collars, a collar wheel provided with a recess, mounted to the upper portion of said vertical shaft and secured to the bench, a horizontal arm secured to said shaft and provided with a slot, a trunnion mounted therein and provided with a second collar wheel of less diameter than the first mentioned wheel, said second collar wheel being adjustable to the contour of the pieces to be bent, spaced slots in the bench, bearing elements for supporting one end of the piece to be bent, adjustable in said slots, and means for rotating said vertical shaft.
