stares ANTON ALBERT DOMY, OF ELMHURST, NEW YORK.
DECORATING DEVICE.
Application filed June l, 1922. Serial No. 565,150.
T 0 al? `whom it my concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON ALBERT DowY, a former citizen of Switzerland (who has forsworn his allegiance to that country and declared his intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, and is therefore not now a citizen or subject of any country,
and is a resident of Elmhurst, Long Island, in the county of Queens and State of New York), have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Decorating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in decorating devices, especially designed for use in the decorating or marking of walls with oil and water colors. The use of the device is of course not limited to this purpose, and may be used for various other purposes, as for instance, in connection with painting, varnishing or other manner of surfacing.
The object of my invention is the production of a decorating or marking device through the medium of which the decoration or marking of a surface by liquid coloring matter may be effectedA with ease and expedience.
A further object is the production of a decorating or marking device whichl will be simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, and durable and efficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best-understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and 1n which, I
Fig. l is a plan view of my invention, with the roller shown partly in section,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the upper p0rtion of the device, and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modified form of marking device.
'The preferred form of construction,l as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a cylindrical member or roller 6, preferably constructed of wood. Said member 6 is carried or operated by a handle or guiding member 7 having spaced arms 8 in the loop ends of which are rotatably mounted the ends of an axle rod 9. which passes through the said member` 6. On the periphery of the member 6 is a covering 10 of absorbent material having an irregular surface, such as sponge, which is secured to the member 6 by means of circular metallic bands l1.
In the form shown in Fig. 1, a plurality of spaced bands 11 are employed which surround and embrace the covering 10 at intervals, compressing the same so as to form a plurality of spaced annular sections, which sections are thus separated at their peripheral surfaces. In the form shown in Fig. 3 only 2 retaining bands l1 are employed which engage and contract the ends of the covering, leaving a straight continuous surface between said bands. The bands are fastened to the member 6 by means of brads l2, or other suitable securing devices.
In using the device the same is first dipped into the water color, or other liquid coloring matter, which itis desired to apply, hereafter the member 6 is drawn over the surface to be colored, by means of the handle 7. The irregular or foraminous character of the covering 10 results in the production of-a sort of mottled effect which is very desirous, particularly in the wall decorating where oil or water colors are used. If it is desired to produce a band or ribbon effect, an engaging member of the form shown in Fig. l is used; and if it is desired to roduce a plain uniform surface, a device of t e form shown in Fig. 3 is employed.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I,
therefore, do not wish to be limited to the' precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail Inyself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A decorating device of the class described comprising a cylindrical rotatable member; a covering on the periphery of said member consisting of absorbent material and forming an irregular surface; and narrow retaining bands surrounding and reducing certain portions of said covering for securing the same in position.
2. A decorating device of the class described comprising a cylindrical roller: a handle for carrying and rotatably operating said roller; a layer of absorbent material covering the peripheryA of said roller; and a plurality of spaced metallic members encircling and compressing said layer at intervals Iand dividing the saine into a plurality of annular sections.
3. A decorating device of the class described comprsing a cylindrical rotatable mdmber a covering on the periphery of said member formed .of sponge; and narrow retaining bands embracing said covering and compressingr portions of the same to a reduced diameter, thereby forming a plurality of equally spaced rollers, each separated from the other at the periphery of said member.
4. A decorating device of the class def scribed comprising a cylindrical roller of wood; a covering on the periphery of said roller consisting of sponge; and narrow metallic bands embracing said covering `and compressing portions of the same to a diameter closely approximating the diameter of said roller, thereby forming a plurality of similar narrow rollers, each separated from the other at the peripheral surface, said device producing a compound ribbon effect.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of a subscribing witness.
ANTON ALBERT DOMY.
