ELECTRICAL BATH CABINET.
Application filed December 29, 1920. Serial No. 433,780.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRIET A. GREENA- WALT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milledgeville, in the county of Car- "roll and State of 'Illinois,'have invented lowing is a specification.
My invention has reference to electrical bath cabinets, and is-specially designed for use in private homes, and other places where a simple, compact, and inexpensive device of this kind is desired. By supplying heat thereto electrically all of the obnoxious fumes which are common to cabinets heated by gas or other fuel are eliminated.
Another advantage of the invention consists in the possibility of providing a supply of hot air alone, or hot air and medicated vapor at the same time, and distributing the same so as to be most effective to the occupant thereof. In many devices of this kind hot air only is supplied, while in others a vapor is produced for a time, then discontinued, and replaced by the heated air.
Another advantage consists in the as rangement of the cabinet so that all of the control devices are within reach of the occupant, permitting the heat to be turned off or on, or hot or cold water to be supplied for spray purposes, from the interior of the cabinet, doing away with the necessity of having an assistant or attendant.
A further purposeof the invention is to provide a compartment which can be opened so that there will be no obstruction to the entrance of the user into the cabinet or his departure therefrom. The parts of the cabinet are also detachable, so that they can be readily taken apart for shipment- The heating and vaporizing devices are in a separate compartment in the lower part of the cabinet, and can be easily. reached for the purpose of removal or attention. The cabinetis preferably formed of wood, but it can be made of metal or other material if desired. It is of the upright type of cabinets, and so constructed as to occupy a minimum of space in a room, making a desirable bathroom accessory.
The above-named, and other features and advantages of the invention willbe more fully understood from the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which;
Fig. 1 is a vertical section on the line 1--1 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device.
1 represents a base, supported on-legs 2, above which base is a compartment 3, removably mounted thereon, and provided in its front face with a door 4., hinged at one side and extending from top to bottom of the cabinet. The top of the compartment is formed by a cross-piece 5, and side pieces 6, between which is supported a cover 7, having a hinged connection with one of the pieces 6. Such cover can thus be turned over to one side leaving a large part of the top open, and if at the'same time the door 4 is opened there is nothing to interfere with the ingress or egress of a person to or from the compartment. A board 8 is slidable in guides 9 on the cover 7 the rear end of such board being provided with a neck opening 10, a portion of which is formed in the cross-piece 5.
Supported on the base 1, so as to form a floor for the compartment 3, is a platform 11, by means of cross-pieces 12, the ends of which are held in recessed portions of the base. At its rear end the latform hasa hinged connection with the base, and openings are provided in the front and rear ends of said platform. Beneath the platform is a floor 13, sloping toward the rear and provided at that point with an outlet The fioor 13 is preferably formed of sheet metal.
Centrally of the floor 13 is an opening in which is held a heating device 14:, having upwardly and outwardly flaring sides, and provided with an electrical heating point or element 15, connected by wires 16 with a switch 17 on the interior of the compartment 3, at a point convenient to the occupant thereof. Connection between the wires and switch is preferably made by-means of a plug 18, so that such parts can be disconnected when it is desirous to separate the cabinet from its base. Connection is similarly made through a plug 19 with an electric system or source of electrical power, whereby a suitable current can be supplied to the point 15, under the control of the switch 17. When the point l 15 is energized the heat produced thereby passes upwardly and out of the openings at the sides and ends of the platform 11.
Mounted above the part 14 is a receptacle 20, held in place by means of arms 21 secured in the part 14, and bearing at their upper ends'against the rim of the vessel20. When such vessel is supplied with suitable liquids the heat from the element 15 causes the same to. vaporize and pass upwardly.
round the sides of the platform, moistening the air in the compartment and charging it' with such medicinal properties as may be desired. When it is desired to supply the com;
partment with heated air alone, the recep- 1 tacle 20 is removed. This can be readily accomplished by raising the front end of the platform 11. Hit is desired to replemsh the supply of liquid in the receptacle 20 this can be done without raising the platform, by means of an opening 22 therein normally closed by a shutter 23, pivoted at one side of the opening.
For the convenience of the occupant of the v cabinet 'a stool 24 .is provided, preferably fittedwith a separate seat 25, having a threaded standard 26 for mounting 1n a with the slide 8 in a forward position. Next Y he moves such slide rearwardly until his neck is enclosed thereby, making the cabinet practically air-tight, and fitted to retain the heat and vapors produced therein. If at any time the heat becomes too intense it can be modified by cutting out the electrical c'urrent'or opening the slide alittle ways. To leave the cabinet the operator first moves the slide 8 forwardly, then opens the cover 7, and lastly opens the door 4..
It has been found to be conducive to producing a perspirationfor the feet of the bather to be immersed in hot water, and I have therefore shoWna small bath tub 29 in Fig. 1 of the drawings, which may be employed for that purpose.
After the occupant of the cabinet has been subjected to a thorough treatment of the heat or heat andvapor combined, the spray is made use of for the purpose of removing all accumulations from the body, the water pass ing downwardly to the floor 13, and outwardly therefrom to a receptacle or drain.
The metal parts of the device are preferably nickel-plated, and the heater 14 and receptacle 20 formed of aluminum.
What Iclaim and desire to secureby Letters Patent,-is:
- A device of the class described, comprising a suitably mounted base provided .in its lower part with a drain floor; a platform'in the upper-part of said base, hinged thereto at its rear edge, and spaced apart therefrom at its sides; a cabinet removably supported on said base and provided in one of its sides with a inged closure; a top for said cabinet provided with a central hinged section; and a, heating device supported insaid base and provided wit means for control thereof from within the cabinet.
In testimony whereof I afix my'signature.
