WINDOW SASH.
Application filed January 21, 1922. Serial No. 530,987.
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrrr DE Bonnow- SKI, a citizen of Poland, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window Sashes, of which the following is aspecification.
it is the object of this invention to provide a window sash construction, whereby the sash is slidable in the window frame, and at the same time may be readily rotated relative to the frame, in order to present the outside of the window glass for cleaning.
More specifically, the invention comprises a simplified pivotal mounting for the window sash, together with conveniently removable locking means for the sash.
In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated, the sash is mounted upon horizontal pivots, between runners slidable in the sides of the window frame. The means for locking the sash relative to the runners, consists of flexible friction strips adapted to b received in cooperating grooves formed in the adjacent edges of the sash and runners, and running the length of the same. By this arrangement, the sash may be firmly locked with relation to the runners, in order to raise and lower the sash in usual manner; and by simply withdrawing the locking strips, the sash is adapted for rotation in the window frame.
T he construction contemplated, may be used as an attachment for standard sashes already in use, or may be embodied in a new sash structure.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings, in which:
l is a fragmentary perspective view of a window sash and frame, constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the side of the sash and frame.
The window frame 1 is provided with usual side channels 2 adapted to receive upper and lower sashes and i respectively.
Each sash is pivotally mounted between runners 5, which extend the length of the sash and are received in the channels 2. These runners project beyond the surface of the window frame, so as to permit the unobstructed rotation of the sashes with relation to the frame.
The pivotal mountings for the sashes consist of pivot pins 6 received through the runners, midway of their length, and having pro ecting ends journaled' in the sides of the sashes, so that when the sashes are unlocked, they may be rotated to present the outside of the window panes.
The means for locking the sashes with relation to their runners, comprise cooperatlng grooves 7 and 8 formed in the adjacent surfaces of the sashes and runners, at one side of the pivot pins, and extending the length of the runners and sashes. Flexible friction strips are received in these cooperating grooves, so as to positively lock the sashes, and may be readily removed Or inserted from the end of the sash.
. The locking strips are adapted to form frictional engagement in the grooves, in order to retain the strips in position, and are of sufficient rigidity to be readily inserted in the grooves. For this purpose, each strip may comprise a strip 10, of steel or the like, having a covering 11 of yieldable friction forming material, such as rubber.
By this arrangement it will be seen that I have provided a convenient locking means for the sashes, upon the removal of which, the sashes may be readily rotated. It will also be noted. that the construction is adaptable to either standard sashes, already in use, or to newly manufactured sashes, embodying the improvement.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the device, it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
"What is claimed is:
A window construction comprising side runners, a sash pivoted between said runners, the meeting edges of said sash and runners having cooperating grooves extending the length thereof, and locking strips received in saidcooperating grooves and slidably removable therefrom, said locking strips each comprising a strip of relatively hard material providing desired rigidity for the locking strip and a covering of yieldable relatively soft material forming a friction surface for the locking strip.
In testimony whereof I have signed inv name to this specification.
JOSEPH DE BOBROXVSKI.
