TWISTER.
Application filed October 25, 1921. Seriai No. 510,237.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that l. JoHN Sximonow BAonMAN, a citizen of the l nited States. and a resident of Rome. in the county of Floyd and State of Georgia. have invented ce't tain new and useful Improvements in Twisters, of which the following is a speci fication.
My invention relates to improvements in twisters, and it consists substantially in the construction. combination and mode ofoporation herein described and claimed.
One of the objects of theinventionis to provide a separator for keeping the many strands of yarn divided in the operation of twisting the strands into a thread.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide the combination of the invention with the mechanically driven rolls of a twister.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a twister, illustrating the application of the improved strand separator, and
Figure 2 is a detail perspective view illustrating the combination of the improved separator with the mechanically driven rolls.
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings, it is to. be observed that the creel 1 carries a plurality of spindles 2 on each of which spools 3 of yarn are supported. A certain number (three in the first instance) of strands of yarn are to be twisted or combined in a single thread 'l and wound on a bobbin l. it is the purpose of the invention to keep the strands of yarn separated, thereby preventing the yarn from running together and tangling.
Loops 5 gather or combine the diverging strands of yarn 3/ into a single strand '1. This strand is wrapped around the mechanically driven rolls (5 and T a number of times as shown in Fig. 2, the rotational movement of the rollscausing the twisting of the single strands of yarn into the resultant thread which is wound on the bobbin 4 as explained above.
A bar or separator 8 has a plurality of series of pins 9 which are equal 'in number to the wraps of the am around the rolls (5 and 7. Each bar 8 I for a number are used in longitudinalalinement) has a head 10 arranged in such a manner that a screw 11 may serve to hold the bar in place on the twisting machine.
The bar 8 may be made of steel, or of any other suitable material. and of a size to sint the purpose intended. Or the bar may be made of sheet steel. with slits through the top so as to provide channels or grooves to separate the yarn which is wrapped aroundthe revolving rolls 6 and '7.
The operation is doubtless understood from a reading of the foregoing description, but on a brief review, may be described as consisting of encasing the bar 8 between the mechanically driven rolls 0 and T which serve to twist the separate strands of yarn 3/ into the single resultant thread T. This thread is wound on the bobbin The yarn is wrapped around the rolls 6 and a. r her of times and with sutlioient tightr prevent sagging and insure the twisting action referred to. The pins 9 function keep the various strands separated so prevent tangling.
'lhis arrangcmcnt oi separating means regarded as being far superior to t common expedient of placing is v.- no
role prcsscr rolls on the yarn between the rolls 6 and T. An objectionable happening of frequent occurrence with this last arren ment is the soiling of the yarn by oil and dirt. Obviously the soiling ot' the yarn cannot occur with the present separator ar rangement. Should the yarn break bobbin 4-, the strands across the rolls 6 and will remain stationary. since the hrealtii'ig o the thread at,the bobbin automatically releases the pull on the strands and also releases the friction of the yarn on the rolls.
While the construction and arrangemen of the improved strand separator herein escribed and claimed. is that of a generailj, preferred form, obviously modifications and changes may be made without departing tron; the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
1. in combination with revolving twister rolls, a bar disposed between the rolls having a plurality of pins separating strands of varn run across the rolls from one to the,
other.
2. In combination with twister rolls, a be? disposed between the rolls being of a thicknews epproximaeely of or less than the diamejiier 0f the rolls, having a plurality of series 0% spaced fingers for separating strands of yarn wrapped from one roll to the next.
: 3. bar, means at each end of the ban by which it may be attached to a machine frame between revolving twister rolls, so as to constitnte one member of a series of such bars along the rolls, and means arranged in e plurality 01" groups along said bar to produce channels for the passage of yarn 10m one roll @0 the next.
