EDWARD LAMBERT, or oouvnlv'r, Louisiana.
'wEEn-nEs'rao me MACHINE.
Application filed'Jan'uary 20, 1920. Serial no. 352,722.
To all to hem it may concern Be it known that LEDWARD LAMBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Convent, in the parish of'St' James, State of Louisiana, have invented a new and'useful VVeed-Destroying Machine; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to weed destroying machines and particularly to machines adapted for burningand destroying weeds in ditches or the like. a r a A further object is to provide a machine of this character comprising a fuel tank mounted on a wheeled body, said wheeled body being adapted to straddle a ditch and to provide a horizontally disposed burner having a centrally disposed downwardly extending segmentally shaped portion adapted to register with a ditch andbe disposed therein so that as the vehicle advances, said burner to which fuel oil is conducted by means of piping will burn the trash and weeds within the ditch, and means for raising the burner out of the ditch when desired. It is also the object of the invention to provide flame shields on each side of the burner whereby the flames will be prevented from damaging plants growing on either side of the ditch.
With the above and otherobjects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine SllOWlIlg the burner disposed in a ditch.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the machine.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the burner, and the pipes leading thereto.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a frame, said frame being provided with a transversely disposed axle 2, 0n the ends of which wheels 3 are rotatably mounted. The forward end of the frame is provided with single trees 4, to which draft animals may be attached for moving the vehicle as a whole forwardly during a ditch burning operation. The vehicle is adapted to be moved longitudinallyover a ditch5 and in such a position as to straddle the ditch, as shown in Figure 2. Mounted on the 1 frame 1 isafuel tank 6 in which the fuel oil utilized for burning'theweeds out of the ditch is carried and supplied to the burner.-
A seat 7 is secured to-the upper face of the tank: 6 forthe occupancy of the operator of the machine. I i
. Extending rearwardly and downwardly from the rear end'of the tank 6 is a flexible. feed pipe 8 into which oil passes on its way to the burner, said feeding of the oil being controlled by a valve 9 carried in the horizontal portion of the pipe 8. The lowerend of the downwardly and rearwardly extending portion of the pipe 8 is connected by means of a T 10 to a transversely disposed pipe 11, said pipe llhas connected to its ends longitudinally disposed pipes 12, which pipes are in turn connected to a transversely disposed burner pipe 13, the burner pipe 13 is in parallel relation to the pipe 11, thereby extending transversely of the ditch 5 in which weeds have collected and which ditch it is desired to be cleared by destroying the weeds and trash that may have collected therein. The burner 13 substantially centrally thereof is provided with a downwardly extending segmental bend so that the flame from the burner will be projected against the entire transverse surface of the ditch and at the same time as the machine advances it will be seen that the ditch will be entirelycleared of weeds and the like. By providing the burner with a centrally disposed segmental portion it will be seen that the portions 13; will overlie the side banks of the ditch and burn the weeds therefrom.
ing crops, the contact of the flame or the radiation of heat to said growing crops will be prevented by the vertically disposed shields 14: which are secured to the vehicle axle as shown at 15. Extending upwardly the pipe 8 and they also form means for Where the machine is used adjacent grow nected as at 11 to a bell crank lever 11% Bell crank lever 11 is pivotally mounted on the axle 2 and has connected to its arm 11 a connecting bar 11 Connecting bar l1 is in turn pivotally connected as at ll to an operating lever 11*, which is pivoted to the side of the tank 6 and is provided with a dog 11 which cooperates with a toothed rack 11 It will be seen that by manipulat ing the lever 11, the burner may be raised clear of the ground when the same is not in use, for the reason that the pipe 8 is a flexible one. Lever 11* also provides means whereby the burner may be adjusted and held in relation to the ground or the bottom of a ditch.
In operation the weed burner is placed in the position shown in Figure 2, that is in a position to straddle the ditch 5. In this position it will be seen that the semicircular downwardly extending portion of the burner willbe disposed in said ditch, also that the portions 13 of the burner will overlie the edges of the ditch so that the weeds adjacent the ditch will also be destroyed. However it is to be understood that the entire burner may, where a ditch is very wide,
' be disposed in the ditch itself as shown in Figure 1.
1 ,asaass The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is A weed burner and destroyer comprising a frame, a transversely disposed axle carried by said frame, a fuel tank disposed on the frame, wheels for supporting said axle, a transversely disposed frame formed from piping and disposed below and rearwardly of the axle, the transversely disposed frame being rectangular shaped and provided with apertures in the rear section thereof, thereby forming a burner, a flexible pipe connection between the transversely disposed frame centrally of the forward portion thereof and the tank, arms pivotally connected to the axle and to the forward side of the transversely disposed frame, a bell crank lever pivotally mounted on the axle to one side of the tank, one arm of said bell crank lever having a linkconnection with the rear side of the transversely disposed frame, a lever pivoted adjacent the side of the tank and a connecting rod connecting the lever to the other arm'of the bell crank lever, said lever forming means whereby the bell crank may be rocked on the axle.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
