To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr A. NEAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SeparatingDevices for Sawing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to re-sawing ma chines, and has for its object'to provide a simple, efiicient and inexpensive device for yieldingly holding apart the" pieces of stock separated by the saws so as to keep the kerf open and prevent binding action of the stock upon the saws, together with means for sup porting and .guiding'the material as it is passed through the machine and means for holding the material down in proper position for the action of the saws with a yielding and variable pressure.
The invention will first be hereinafter more particularly described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specifiction, and then pointed out in the claims at the end of the descrip superposed hold-down device being removed; v y

Referring to said drawings, inwhich the same reference letters are used to denote. corresponding parts in different views, the letter A may. denotethe machine frame, which may be of the form shown, .or' any ordinary construction, and to which may be secured laterally and vertically adjustable mandrelsupporting frames B, carrying circular saws C.- Said frames Bare preferably, of substantially the same construction as the man'- drel-supporting frames shown in my Patent No. 1,340,286 dated May 18, 1920, but any suitable form may be employed, On the frame A are mounted a pair of guide bars D, D", between which the material orwstock to be operated on by the saws is guided and held in proper position for the action of the saws as it passes through the machine. Rotary separat'ng devicesor disks each journaled at the inner end of a longi tudinally movable rod G, protrude through the side slots in the guide bars D, D, in position to enter the cut made by the saws and hold the cut pieces apart The rods Gr are each slidably fitted and housed within a casing H, attached to the outer side of the guide bar D, said housing being preferably of tubular form and having on the inner end thereof a flat faced plate It, extending at an angle thereto and provided with openended slots 71 on opposite sides (Fig. 4) to receive set screws or bolts for securing it to the outer side of the guide bar, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In order that the disk may be held in proper position to enter the kerf or cut made the saws, a stud 01' pin 9' on the lean protrudes through an oblong slot h? in the housing H, parallel with the axis of the disk, to prevent the rod from rotating while permitting movement thereof in the direction of its length. T he free end of the rod G passes through an aperture in the outer end of the housing 25 H, which forms an abutment for one end of a spring I, placed on the rod G between said abutment and a nut c screwed on the rod, so that the spring will yieldingly force the rod toward the flied end of the housing and thereby force the disk into the kerf made by the saws. While I have shown and preferably employ a pair of separating devices one arranged on each side of thematerial opal--- ated on by thesaws, and a pair of hold down devices or presser-feet together with a supporting bar or bed-plate on which the material slides as it is advanced toward the saws it may be desirable in some cases to use a single separator or a single hold. down device or presser-foot and various other changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts wlthouii departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and. I therefore do not desire to belimited to the exact construction or arrangement shown and described. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I p I r l. In a sawing machine, means for yieldingly holding apart or in separatedrelation the two pieces of material acted on by the saws, comprising disk journaled at onc end of a rod extending at an angle intersecting the path of movement of the material through the machine, a spring adapted to yieldingly force the disk in tothe kerf and means to prevent rotary movement of said rod while permitting movement there of in the direction of its length. 4

A yieldable separating device of the character described, comprising a tubular housing having at one end a plate extending at an angle thereto adapted for attachment to a guide bar extending longitudi nally of the machine frame, said guide bar having an elongated slot therein, a longitudinally movable rod within said housing carrying at one end a disk protruding through said slot and having the other end thereof protruding through the outer end of said housing, aspring adapted to yield: ingly force the rod toward thefixed end of the housing, and means to p'rev ent rotary movement of the rod ,whue permitting movement thereof in the direction of its ng ,t a

of means for supporting and guiding through the machine material of different thicknesses and widths to be acted upon by the saws, together with means for separating and holding apart the pieces cut by the saws; said supporting and guiding means comprising a pair of laterally adjustable guide-bars having oblong slots therein near their delivery ends and a vertically adjustable supporting bar arranged between said guide-bars at their receiving ends, and said separating and holding means comprising knife-edged devices protruding through the slots in said guide-bars and secured to spring-pressed rods slidably fitted in sup porting members which project from said guide-bars at an angle to the path of movement of the material through the machine.

In a sawing machine, the combination with means for supporting and guiding material through the machine in position to be acted upon by the saws including a pair of guide-bars having oblong slots therein near their delivery ends, of means for separating and holding apart the pieces cut by the saws, the latter means comprising knifeedged devices protruding through said slots and adapted to enter the kerf on opposite sides of the material, springs for yieldingly forcing said separating devices into the keri, and means for varying the tension of said springs.

In a sawing machine, a yieldable kerf opener comprising a pair of rods arranged at an angle to the path of movement of the material through the machine, said rods carrying separating devices which protrude through guide-bars between which the material moves, springs on said rods for yieldingly forcing the separating devices into the separating the pieces of material cut by the saws, said means compr1s1ng a hollow housplate extending at an angle thereto, means for securing said plate to the outer side of one of said guide-bars, a rod slidably fitted .in said housing member, said rod carrying a separating device at its inner end which protrudes through an opening or slot in the gulde-bar into position to enter the kerf, i
