IMPROVEMENT IN HOSE-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 143,51L-dated October 7, 1873; application filed March 10, 1873.
joints, one of which fits over the end of the other, and in providing the two with suitable straps, which can be linked together when the joints are held at an angle, and when they are brought into a line these straps will so draw the parts together that they will fit and be held closely, a suitable packing being employed between the two.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my coupling. Fig. 2 is a side view,
showing a section of one joint.
A and B are the two sections to be united. The section A has its mouth beveled or scarfed out, so that it will fit and have a motion about the end C of the part B. This end C is provided with an elastic ring or stuffing, D, and is made small enough to fit into the end of the section A. A strap, E, partially enoircles l the section A, and has two pieces, F, extend- Ing along each side of the section, as shown,v
and secured to it at one end, at G. At the other end of the piece is alpin, H, which projects inward, and serves as a point of attach- `ment for the strap I, which is secured to the section B, as shown. This strap has a slot cut into it, as shown by the dotted lines at J, so that the slot upon each part of the strap can be passed over the pins H upon the side piece F of the strap E, when the two sections A B are held at nearly right angles to each other. The two sections are then brought into a line with each other, which operation will lock the pin H into the slot J. rlhe ends of the strap I are beveled, as shown at 7c in dotted lines; and a beveled shoulder, correspondingly placed upon the side pieces F, serves to receive the beveled end and prevent the pipes being turned too far. As the sections are brought into a .line they will be drawn so as to fit snugly, and
without leaking,by the aid of the elastic ring D, which also allows the parts some motion.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hose-coupling consisting of the sections A B, with their ends fitted as shown, and provided withthe straps E I, with the pin H and corresponding slot J, respectively, and having the beveled shoulder at It', the whole constructed and operating as described.
