PATENT UFFICE.
` LUDWIG sTUEFEE, or CINCINNATI, .oHIo.
HosE-oouPLlNe.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 772,975, dated October 25, 1904.
Application filed July 9, 1904.
To [all whom it may concern:
B e it known that I, LUDWIG STUEFED, acitizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvemen ts in Hose-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in hose-coupling.
One of its objects is to provide a simple and reliable coupling which is quickly connected or disconnected and whichis not liable to injury when being drawn over the ground.
Another object is to provide acoupling with a swiveljoint, vsothat the hose willmy improved coupling online fue of Fig. 3.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 vis a section on line e 2 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan View of one-of the coupling-sections detached. Fig. 5 is a plan View of 'the opposite coupling-section, showingthe reverse side from Fig. 2.
A represents the male, and B the female, section of the coupling, and Dthe hose-sec# tions, which may be secured thereto in any approved manner. The meeting ends of the two sections are preferably beveled, so that one fits tightly within the other, and may be provided with an elastic packing-ring or not, as desired. Projecting from one side of the section B is a tongue B', to the opposite sides of which are hinged the clamping-sections E F, the three parts B' E F forming a ring which embraces and locks the sectionA in its `adjusted position relative to the section B.
* In order to insure -this looking action, the
`Serial No. 215,877. (No model.)
*section A is provided with a raised annular rib G, which seats in a corresponding groove g in the parts B' E F. A spring-arm or strap II vis secured either to one of the hinged sections E F, as indicated in full line in Fig. 5, or preferably to the tongue B', as indicated in Fig. 3, and its free end provided with an opening 7L to pass over the stud e' to lock the free ends of the hinged sections together.
The action of thefrib G and groove g is such as to force the two coupling-sections together swivel Vor be turned relative to the section B, so that kinks or twists may be taken from the hose without uncoupling the same. By employing a broad tongue B', rigidly connected tothe coupling member B, this tongue takes the major part of the strain, thereby relieving the hinged sections from undue strain. The coupling herein shown and described is capable of considerable modification without departing from the principle of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claimis- A 1. 'In `a hose-coupling, a coupling member having a seatingface and an external annular rib, a coupling member having a registering seating-face, a tongue projecting beyond said face, clamping-sections hinged at opposite sides of said tongue, a groove in said tongue and clamping-sections to receive the rib of the opposite coupling member, and means for locking said olamping-sectionsover said rib. 2.- In a hose-coupling, a coupling member having a seating-face and an external annular rib, a coupling member having a seating-face vto register with that of the opposite coupling member, a tongue projecting beyond said face, clamping-sections hinged at opposite sides of said tongue, aV groove in said tongue and clamping-sections toreceive the ribof the adapted to engage av stud on one of the clamping-sections to lock the free ends of the clamping-sections together.
opposite coupling member, and a spring-armv and at the Sametime permit the section A to 3. In a hose-coupling, a coupling,` member tongue, and means for locking' the free ends of having a seating-face and an external rib, a said clamping-Sectione` together. lO coupling member having` a Seatingnface toregln testimony whereof vI have aiixcd my sig'- ister With that of the opposite coupling memnature in presence ci two uitnesses.
ber, a tongue of substantially one-third of the circumference of the coupling member Titnessesz projecting beyondsaid seating-face,clamping- C. W. MILES, sections hinged at opposite Sides of said A. MCCORMACK.
LUDW'IG S'ITUVICFIGAIC.
