POLE OB, POST BASE MOLD.
Application filed October 10, 1921.
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, MATT Minosnviorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trinidad, in the county of Las Animas and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pole or Post Base hiolds, and of which the following is a speci fication.
This invention relates to molds for plastic material and has for its object the provision of novel collapsible mold adapted for use in molding the bases or foundations for posts, poles and the like whereby the post or pole will bc'lirmly anchored in a mass of cement or concrete and be partially protected against'decay by dampness.
i -ln important and more specific object is the provision of a mold for this purpose which is formed as a sheet consisting of a plurality of flexibly connected slats, the sheet being provided at its ends with novel fastening means whereby it may be held in cylindrical form when its use is desired.
Another object is the provision of a de vice of this character which may be used for casting pole bases in place, or which may be used for casting cored out blocks for subsequent use.
A further object is the provision of a mold of this character which is provided internally with a spacing member which operates to hold the assembled form in proper shape and to prevent inward collapsing prior to the disposition of the plastic material therein.
An additional object is the provision of a mold of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to use, highly eliicient in service, durable and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and ad vantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illus trated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my mold in set-up position.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through the securing members.
Figure 4 is a view showing the device collapsed into sheet-like form.
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view through a base cast about a pole or post.
Serial No. 506,607.
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view through a cored-out base.
Figure 7 is an elevation of the core.
Referring to the drawings in detail, I have shown my mold as comprising a sheetlike body of rectangular form consisting of a plurality of elongated slats 10 which are secured near their ends to a pair of flexible bands 11. the securing means being preferably rivets 0r bolts. It will be seen that these slats 10 may he formed of wood. or metal, as preferred, and if desired they may be of slightly different widths at their ends whereby the completed mold, instead of beingpurely cylindrical, may be slightly tapered.
Pivoted at 12, upon one slat and near one edge of the sheet, preferably upon the slat next to the last one, are swinging latch bars 13 which have their free ends connected by a bar 14 which carries a loop-like handle 15. Extending from these latch bars 13. near the connecting bar 141-, are outwardly extending pins 16 which are for a purpose to be described.
Secured upon the other endmost slat a." metal plates 17 which are formed with up struck tongues 18 beneath which the latch bars 18 are engageable, these tongues being formed at one edge with depressions or recesses 19 within which may be engaged the pins 16 whereby to prevent the latch bars from subsequently slipping out of engagement with the tongues 18. V
Projecting inwardly from certain of the slats or from all of them. if preferred, are projections 20 which may be small nails and which serve as supports for a disk 21 of circular shape which is for the purpose of holdingthe form in proper position.
The'use of the device is as follows ssuming that a hole has been dug in which. it is desired to plant a post or hole, my device is rolled into cylindrical form and the slat bars 13 are engaged beneath the tongues 18. The disk 21 is then inserted within the device so that it will seat upon the projections 20 and this disk will serve to expand the rolled form slightly so as to spring the pins 16 into engagement with the notches or recesses 19 so that displacement of the latch bars will be prevented. The disk may then be removed. A small quantity of concrete or cement is then poured into the mold and the post or pole is placed therein,
completely the concrete as will be readily apparent.
The dish. 2]. need not be used. it preterrcd.
except to hold the parts in place when the device is not in use so as to prevent injln'y. It will be observed that in use the mold is inverted with respect to Figure 1 so that the base will be larger at the bottom than at the top, as shown in Figure 5.
If desired, the mold may be used for easting bases to be subsequently placed in position, in which event I make use of atapered, tin-sheathed core 222 which. is placed in the mold prior to casting and which is subsequently withdrawn by means of suitable handles 23. This feature is shown in Fig ures 6 and 7.
From the foregoing description and astudy of the drawings it will be apparent that l have thus provided a. simply constructed and consequently inexpensive mold which is particularly adapted tor use in forming the bases or foundations oi posts or poles, the use of my mold resulting; in the provision of a cylindrical anchor or foundation in which the postor pole embedded, the cement surrounding the post or pole serving to a great extent to prevent the decay of the latter on account ol'inoisture.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
What is claimed is 1. A mold of the character described com prising a plurality or flexibly connected p arallel slats, a plurality of flexible bands se cured to and connecting the slats, the sheet formed by the connected slats being adapted to be rolled into cylindrical form, spacing means located Within the form and engaging all the slats, and aplurality of latch 1i. rcane? bars pivoted at or near one endniost slut, and offset tongues mounted upon or near the other endmost slat and with which said bars may engage.
2. A mold of the character described comprising a plurality of flexibly connected. parallel slats, a plurality of flexible bands secured to and conecting the slats, the sheet formed by the connected slats being adapted to be rolled into cylindrical form, spacing means located Within the form and engaging all the slats, a plurality of latch bars pivoted at or near one endinost slat, oit'set tongues mounted upon or near the other endmost slat and with which said bars engage, outwardlyextending pins carried by said latch bars, and the edges oi said tongues being formed with recesses for the accommodation of said pins.
3. A mold oi the character described comprising a sheet-like member formed of a plurality of slats flexibly connected together, said sheet-like member being adapted to be rolled into circular shape to-define a cylinder, projections extending inwardly from said slats and constitutinga support, a circular disk seated upon said projections and engaging against the innermost slat, a plurality of latch bars pivoted on a slat one end otthe sheet and connected'for simultaneous movement, and keepers mounted upon a slat at the other end of the sheet and eiigzzurealile by said latch bars.
el. A device of. the character described con'mrising a plurality of slatsjllexibly connected, a retaining member located within the enclosure formed by the slat and serving to prevent inward collapsing of the latter, a, pair of latch bars pivoted upon the slat at one end ot' the series, a crossbar connecting said latch bars for simultaneous movement and provided with a handle, a pair of metal plates secured upon the other endmost slat ot the series and formed with upstruck ottset tongues beneath which said latch bars may be engaged, the outer edges of said tongues being formed with recesses, and pins extending upwardly from the latch bars and adapted for engagement with said recesses.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
