GinsoN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheels, of which the following is 'a specification, reference being had to the drawings herein referred to, which are made a vpart hereof.
This invention relates to wheels, Vand more particularly to the means foi-'securing the rim to the periphery of the wheel. Among the particular objects are to produce a simple and economical device of this character, which will' be most effective lin securing' the rim and avoid accidental dislodgment of any extraordinary strain.
lWhile my invention may be embodied in various forms, its construction or design maybe made universal, that is, to it a variety of all kinds and'shapes of rims in connection with which it is likely to be used,
the original form in which I have embodied it is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

The-main member D of the securing device, has a heel a? engaging the side or the felly, which may, however, be any peripheral portion of the wheel iixed with relationto the main portion of the wheel, and at the other-'end it has a 'toe or wedge shaped projection d', the upper face ofv which CZ is `inclined with respect to the felly-'band B. The second member E of the clamping device has a surface e bearing on the surface ci, and at one end has a portion e adapted to engage the rim, which Serial No. 103,635.
preferably is at the up-turned side of the rim at a point having a larger diameter lthan the` minimum inside diameter of the rim. At the other end of E, which mav be called the heel. produce an enlargement 6 in the modified form shown in Fig. 5, l while in Fig. 4 the end e may be of uniform thickness. In either case the member E is adapted for engagement with the side of the rim preferably at two points, the one more 'or less under the rim and the other point at the up-turned portion at the side.
The second part of the securing means E, as shown'in Fig. 5, has the enlarged .projection 6, which I call the heel, with the object ofhaving that end tapered so that the pressure of the first member D of the securing device when being forced in,
will tend to hold the second member E snugly againstvthe rim and press it in laterally to maintain it in lined relation with the rim. The upper end of part D, namely,
`the flanged', moves when the securing porvbelow the bearing surface 6.
As shown at K, the aperture L in the member D is enlarged at one side so that when the clamp is loosened it may be withdrawn, so that the lip or wedge iiange Z clears the edge ofthe felly or fixed portion of the wheel, and the entire securing device can then be turned laterally, and will drop away, or can be forced towards the centre of the wheel so that the sides of the securing means will not obstruct the removal of the rim laterally.
The clamps, however, may be so proportioned that the opening L will permit of suiicient movement so as to allow the rim to be laterally displaced without interference.
ln embodying my invention in a continuous wedge ring, that is, on a plurality of individual clamps or lugs, but one piece split individual, or the part D may be continuous and the members E a plurality of separate pieces, or each of the parts E and D may be a split ring.
lVhile my securing means in any of its various forms is inserted at one side, on the other side of the wheel periphery, and as 'shown in the accompanying drawings, the
telly-band has a projecting ridge which engages the other side of the rim. This, however, may be modified in various Ways. lndividual .stops or abutments may be used, or engaging ribs or collars under the rim, in any manner adapted to co-operate with my securing device. rlhe securing device may also be shaped in its parts so as to engage on one element, that is, along a circumferential element of the rim, or it may have two points of engagement, as illustrated in Ithe accompanying drawings, or so fashioned as to have a degree of' surface contact to suit desired conditions.
Primarily, however, the secondary meniber E engages and retains a fixed position laterally with respect to the rim and the wheel proper', in conjunction with the abutment engaging the other side of the rim,- and by engagement of the rip-turned side will with perfect certainty prevent the lateral displacementof the rim over the securing device. Vith this the other member D of the securing device is afforded two obliquely disposed surfaces between which the wedge shaped end d may be pressed, and may be moved to any extent that becomes necessary in order to properly eli'ect the locking of the rim. In other words, one portion of my clamp performs the Yfunction of absolutely preventing lateral displacement and the additional 'function of presenting in conjunction with the edge surface of the folly-band, a perfect seat for the wedge which effects the actual clamping. The co-operation of the parts is' such that the radial clamping is effected with certainty, because the flange of the member D presents a straight surface, so that it will be forced into position until the actual radial strain stops it, whereas some clamps for rims now in use will be prevented from moving to the desired extent to create radial pressure, on account of the engagement on the iup-turned side of the rim, thereby resulting in only lateral pressure of a greater degree, and not the perfect securing effect obtained by my invention. i
The securing device may even be duplicated on opposite sides of the wheel. Manv variations may be made in details ot con)- struction or dimensions, as well as material. In the preferred form the parts are made oi metal of quality best suited for cheapness rand strength and facility of manufacture.
Without confining myself to the particular form of constructions herein shown and described, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In combination in a wheel, a fixed peripheral element on the Wheel so positioned as to form an abutment for the detachable rim to prevent its movement in one direction, a plurality of' two-part clamps disposed at spaced intervals about the periphery between the fixed wheel element and one side of' the detachable rim,v one of the parts of each of said clamps adapted to engage thc rim and the other part of each of said twopart clamps adapted to move laterally with respect tothe fixed peripheral wheel element to cause the locking of' said detachable rim in position, and means for 'forcing the second part of each of said clamps laterally and for securing it in locking position.
2. In a wheel, a detachable rim, a peripheral fixed element on the wheel proper having a fixed abutment for engagement of the detachable rim when moved in one direction, a plurality of clamps disposed in spaced relation about the periphery between the fixed element and one edge of the detachable rim, means for drawing one part of each of said clamps against said peripheral element, a bearing face on each of said clamps inclined to the peripheral surface of the fixed element on the wheel and a movable element associated with each of said clamps slidable on said inclined bearing face and having its opposite face adapted to engage the detachable rim for the purpose of locking the same in position on the wheel. 3. In combination in a wheel, a tire rim securing means comprising a plurality of clamp elements in spaced peripheral position around the periphery of the Wheel and movable laterally with respect to the Wheel periphery, and a clamping block associated with each of said clamp elements and slidable thereon adapted to engage the rim on one side and' means to force the engagement of said clamp elements whereby they remain immovable with relation to the wheel when said tire rim is secured.
4. A tire rim clamp having a bearing at one end adapted to engage a side of a fixed peripheral part of the wheel and having a wedge-shaped flange at the other end adapted to be inserted between the periphery of the wheel and the over-hanging portion of the rim, a hole in said clamp, an abutment on the side of the wheel proper, means to move said clamp with relation to the peripheral portion of the wheel, and an enlargement on one side of the hole adapted to permit limited lateral movement of said clamp witlrrelation to said abutment.
