Be it known that WILLIAM H. Fox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and use ul Improvements in Demountable tinis; do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en" able others skilled in the art to-wliieh it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in deinountablc wheel rims; and, to this end, it consists of the novel devices and combinations 'af devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, likecharacters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

The numeral 14 indicates the telly of a wheel and the numeral 15 indicates the casf a pneumatic tire, of the type having straight sides and secured to the telly by the invention. Rigidly secured to the felly 14, is a metallic w one of its integrally formed cam flange 17 and on its other edge a multiplicity of circumfcrentially spaced cam lugs 18, that are beveled both circumferentially and transversely. Also integrally formed with the wheel rim 16, between two of the cam lugs 18, is a lug or abutment 19, the purpose of which will presently app Removably flange 22 1s detachably secured to the other edges thereof by a multiplicity of bayonet joints 24, the lugs of wh' h are integral with the flange 22 and the slots of which are cut in said rim. These bayonet joints 24 require first an axial ment and then a. circumferential movement og'lthe flange 22, with a) formed in the tire-retaining flange 22, is a lock notch 25, the purpose of which presently appear.
Integral with the inner face of the deinountable rim 20. on the same edge portion thereof with the flange 21, is an annular cam flange 26 that is reversely beveled from the cam flange 17 on the wheel rim 16 for cooperation theroivith. multiplicity of transverse passageways 27 is formed in the cam flange 26 for the the demountablc rim onto or from the wheel rim 16. in the cam flange 26. is a transverse passageway 28 for the lug 1... This lug 19 and passageway 28 correctly position the demountablc wheel rim for application to or removal from the wheel rim 16.
An inwardly projecting flange 29, integral .eel rim 16, having on will with the inner face of the demountable rim 20, covers the adjacent joint between thetwo rims 16 and 20. This flange 29 is located laterally inward of the slots of the bayonet joints 21. Also integral with the inner face of the demountable rim 20, at the inner face of the flange 29, is a multiplicity of circumferentially spaced cam lugs 30 that are beveled, both eircumferentially and transversely, for cooperation with the cam lugs 18. The engaging surfaces of the cam lugs 18 and 30 are reversely formed, so as to bear directly, the one upon the other.
In applying the demountable rim 20 to the wheel rim 16, the same is first given an axial movement to carry the cam lugs18 through the passageway 27,- the lug 19 through the passageway 28 and the cam flange 26 into engagement with the cam flange 17. Then a slight circumferential movement of the de mountable rim 20, with respect to the wheel rim 16, will carry the cam lugs 30 into engagement with the cam lugs 18. The engaging cam flanges 17 and 2t; and the cam lugs 18 and 30 place the two rims 1G and 20 under strain for reverse axial movement. thereby securely locking the same together and, at the same time, properly alining the demountahle rim 20 on the wheel rim 16. These engaging cam flanges and cam lugs also truly center the (ll-mountable rim 20 on the wheel rim 16 and lceep the same in true annular form.
To prevent a circumferential movement of the demountahlc rim 20 on the wheel rim 16 in a direction to release the engaging cam lugs 18 and 30, a key 31, in the form of a wedge, is mounted in a seat 32 formed in the flange 29 and adjacent edge of said rim 20 and inserted between the lug or abutment 19 on the wheel rim 16 and a lug or abutment 33 integral with the lug 30 adjacent to the seat 32. Obviously, these two circmnfcrentially spaced abutments 19 and 33. the one on the demountable rim and the other on the wheel rim, engage opposite edges of the key 31 and thereby hold the two rims interlocked, to prevent a circumferential movement, which would release the engaging cam lugs 1.8 and 30. The key 31 is held in its seat 32 by a single nut-equipped iholt 34 passed through alined bores in the wheel rim 16 and an inwardly projecting lug 35 integral with the key 31. Tntcgral with the key 31, is an outwardly projecting lock lug 36 arranged to enter the lock notch 25, when the tire-retaining flange '22 is interlocked with the demountable rim 20 by the bayonet joints 24, and thereby hold said flange against a circumferentia movement to release the bayonet joints.
For the purpose of this case, it is not thought necessary to illustrate the valve stem, but it may be here stated that the neressary openings in the two rims and felly will he provided and that the openings in the wheel rim and felly must be of sufficient size to permit the required circumferential movement of the demountable rim 20 on the wheel rim 1G to and from a locked position.
Referring to the modification, illustrated in Fig. 13, which takes the place of the key 31, shown in the remaining figures, the abutment 33 is beveled at 37 and a set screw 38, mounted in a fixed nut in the felly 14, impinges against the beveled surface 37 and circumferentially forces the cam lugs 30 onto the cam lugs 18, as shown. When this construction is used, additional means will, of course, have to be provided for locking the removable retaining flange 22 in place.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a wheel rim, .of a demountable rim therefor, said two rims having on one of their corresponding edges cooperating cam flanges and on their other corresponding edges a plurality of circumferentially spaced, pairs of coooperating cam lugs, the cam flange on one of said rims having a plurality of circumferentially spaced passageways for the cam lugs on the other of said rims to permit an axial movement of one of said rims to and from the other thereof, said cam flanges and lugs arranged to be interlocked by a circumferential movement of one of the rims with respect to the other to prevent axial separation thereof.
2. The combination with a wheel rim, of ademountable rim therefor, said two rims having on one of their corresponding edges cooperating cam flanges and on their other corresponding edges a plurality of circumferentially spaced pairs of cooperating cam lugs, the cam flange on the demountable wheel rim having a plurality of circumferentially spaced passageways for the cam lugs on the Wheel rim to permit an axial movement of the demountable rim to and from the Wheel rim, said cam flanges and lugs arranged to be interlocked by a circumferentlal movement of one of the rims with respect to the other to prevent axial separation thereof.
3. The combination with a wheel rim, of a d-emonntablc rim therefor, said two rims having on one of their corresponding edges cm'iperatmg cam flanges and on their other corresponding edges a plurality of circumfcrentiallyspaced pairs of cooperating cam lugs, the cam flange on the demountable wheel rim having a plurality of circumferentially spaced passageways for the cam lugs on the wheel. rim to permit an axial movement of the demountahle rim to and from the wheel rim. said cam flanges and lugs arranged to be interlocked by a circumferential movement oi one of the rims wit? respect to the other to prevent axial sop. ltion thereof, and a key for locking the two rims against circumferential movement to release the cooperating cams.
4. The combination with a wheel rim. of a demountable rim therefor, said two rims having on one of their corresponding edges cooperating cam flanges and on their other corresponding edges a plurality of circumferen t ially spaced pairs of cooperating cam lugs, the cam flange on the demonntahle wheel rim having a plurality of eirenmferentially spaced passageways for the cam lugs on the wheel rim to permit an axial movement of the demouniable rim to and from the wheel rim, said cam flanges and lugs arranged to be interlocked by a circumferential movement of one of the rims with respect to the other to prevent axial separation thereof, said pairs of cooperating cam lugs having engaging'surfaces that are beveled both circumferentially and transversely of the Wheel rim.
5. The combination with a wheel rim, of a demountable rim therefor, said two rims having on one of their corresponding edges cooperating cam flanges and on their other eorresponding edges a plurality of circumferentially spaced, pairs of cooperating cam lugs, the cam flange on one of said rims having a plurality of circumferentlally spaced passageways for the cam lugs on the other of said rims to permit an axial mow-om t of one of said rims to and from ihe 'iini' thereof, said ram flanges and lags arranged to be interlocked h a circumferential movement of one of the rims with respect to the other to prevent axial separation ihereoi' am] a joint flange on one of the rim arranged to rover the eir ilmferential joint hw tween the two rims on the opposite ei ie thereof t'rom said passageways.
