. OF CHICAGO,'ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION 0F NEW JERSEY.
TRUCK SIDE FRAME.
Continuation of application Serial No.` 433,412, led December 27, 1920. Now Patent No. 1,377,704', dated K May 10, 1921. This'application filed April 18, 1921,'*Seral No. 462,179.
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatV I, JOHN A. LAMONT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements `in Truck Side Frames, of which the following-is a specification.
This invention relates to 'a truck side frame and more particularly to a side frame for a six-wheel truck,
This application is a continuation of applicants co-pending application, Serial` No. 133,112 filed December 27, 1920.
The object of this invention is to provide a truck side frame which is simple, relatively light, andyet durable inr construction, and having aplurality of portions adapted to cooperate with journal boxes, bolster' members, equalizing members, etc., in a manner to meet all the requirements for successful commercial operation.
This and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement disclosed on the accompanying sheet of drawings in whichi Figure 1 is a side elevation of a truck side frame embodying` my invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the same side frame;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of said side frame;
Figure 4- is a fragmentary -view showing an inside elevation of the side frame at one of the bolster openings; and,
Figures 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 arerespectively sectional views taken in the planes of lines 5-5, 6--6, 7 7, 8 8 and 9-9 of Figure 1.
The various novel features of my inven-- tion will be apparent from the following description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the figures of the drawings, it will be noted that I have disclosed my invention in connection with a six-wheel truck side frame cast in a single 'piece and forming a beam 10. This side frame is provided with a middle pocket 11, for the reception of intermediate journal box and equalizer parts and with two other pockets 12 intermediate said middle pocket 11 and the end of the frame for receiving end journal boxes. The middle pocket 11, has side walls 13, bymeans of which the associated middle journal box is guided in its relative vertical movement. This middle pocket 11, also has side walls 14 for limiting relative lateral movement between the middleV journal box and the side frame. As shown, the
and is narrower at the top than atV the :in--
termediate and lower portions of the side frame, upwardly converging portions 16 connecting the wider and narrower parts of the slde frame at this section. f
Each of the pockets 12 for receiving end journal boxes has downwardly extending walls 17 for guiding Vthe associated journal boxes in their relative vertical movement with respect thereto. The roof of each of the pockets 12 is provided with a recess 18 for the reception of a rib formed on thev upper surface of the associated journal box. Formed integrally with the guide wall 17 and on one side thereof are walls 27 depending from the main portion ofthe side frame and being circular in plan, as shown particularly in Figures 2 and 3 for the reception of springs which are interposed between the side frame and associated journal boxes. The depth of these spring poele ets 27, increases toward the guide wall 17 of the pockets 12 and are formed to retain the springs in question. spring pockets, downwardly extending lugs 19 are formed forcentering the springs,
Intermediate the middle pocket 11 and each of the end pockets 12 arepockets 2O for bolster' members. In this particular instance, the pockets extend upwardly within the side frames and have side walls 21 which act as vertical guides for the bolster ends and also cooperate with the bolster members yfor taking all thrusts and shocks incident to In the roof of these y each bolster pocket 20 and the adjacent end pocket 12 is a depending portion 22 terminating in a bearing 23 formed by drilling an opening 211 for the reception of a `pin 26 which pivotally supports one end of an asso'- ciated equalizing lever.
This single piece integrally formed sidi` frame 1s shown quite generally in fchannel and in bei; sections throughout its length but itwill be understoodtliat the sections may be Varied at different points without departing from the spirit the scope or" theinvention.
It is my` invention to dover all modifications falling within the terms of the lfollowing claims.
I claim:
Il. Aniiiteggfraily formed sidel 'frame forma six-wheel 'truck v having filormed.v ytherein l erinediate and end journal pockets for ,boxesfandhaving depending ,wall portions forming pockets roil the reception of sprm at the sides of associated journal boxes.y
2. An integrally foi-.ined 'truck side frame having formed? therein pockets :tor journal boxes and having` depending wall portions forming' pockets for the reception ol springs at the sidesiof associated journal boxes.
L3. An integrallj7 formed side frame for. a six-wheel,- truck lhaving :formed therein pockets `tor intermediate and end journal boxes and having' depending wall portions forming pockets 'for the reception oi, springs at the sides of associated journal boxes, said side frame also having supporting means for v an equalizing lever.l
l-L An integrall 'formed side frame for sixywheel truol; `having formed therein ,six-wheel truck pockets for intermediate and end journal boxes and lor'bolster membersy and having depending wall portions forming pockets `tor the reception o springs at the sides of associated journal boxes.
5. Anintegrallv formed side frame Jfor a having,` formed therein pockets yfor intermediate and end journal boxes and for/bolstermembersand having *depending wall portions 'forming pockets for the reception of springs at the sides of associated journal boxes, saidside frame also having supporting means for an equalizing' 1 6. An integrally. formed side frame for a lormed therein poelretsiztor intermediate and end journal sixfwheel truelr having JOHN ALAMONT.
