To all whom it ma y concern Be it known that I, ERICK LEONARD Ax, a citizen of the United States, and resident of North Braddock, in the county of Allegheny an'd Stat'e of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Safety Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wire cutting pliers, and has for "its particular object, the provision of such pliers having safetymeans for-holding the wire that has'been cut.

Referring particularly to the drawings, the letters A and'B designate the two limbs of my improved pliers, which are constructed to form gripping jaws or heads 2 having serrated gripping faces 3, handle portions i, and disk-bearin joint portions 5. The diskbearing joint portions 5 are formed in the usual manner by forming an enlarged circular bearing disk portion between the jaw or head 2- 'and the handle 40f each limb, and

The portions 5 are cut away to form notches 7 and 8, the inner edges ofwhich act as cutting blades to cut wire or the like, the notches 7 and 8 of the pair of limbs cooperating to form a continuous upper and lower grooves or recess for the reception of the wire to be cut. v
The disk portions 5 of limbs 'A and B have substantially triangularly shaped slots 10 and 9, respectively, formed therein, the
slot 9 having its widest opening at the rear of the jaw member 2 and converging up-' wardly and rearwardly, forming a small opening in the forward face of the upper notch 7, while the slot lOhas its widest opening atthe forward end of the handle portion and converges upwardly and forwardly, forming a small opening in the rear face of the upper notch 8.
Clamping pins '11 are mounted loosely within the slots 9 and 10,'and are of sufficient' length toengage the rear and front faces, respectively, of the upper pair of notches? and'S when the pliers are closed.
vThe pin 11 within the slot9 hasiits lower end pivotally mounted in a depression or slot 14 in' the jaw portion of the limb opposite the one in which it reciprocates, and the pin '11 within the slot 10 has its lower end pivotally mounted in a depressionor slot 14 in the forward end of the handle portion of the limb opposite the one in which it reciprocates.
In Fig. 4 I have shown the lower pair of notches 7 and 8 also equipped with my improved clamping means. This construction is a duplication of that already. described,
with the exception that two slots, 9. and 10,
are formed in each disk and a pin 11 is mounted in each slot so as to provide a pair of clamping pins for both the upper and lower pairs of notches 7 and 8.
The operation of the device is as follows lVire or the like is passed through the notches 7 and 8, which are in alinement when the pliers are in open position. Pressure is then applied to the handle portions 4;, and the pliers are closed, which will cause the inner or cutting edges of the notches to grip and cut the wire. Simultaneous with the cutting of the wire by closin the pliers, the clamping pins 11 will move through the narrow or small end openings of the slots 9 and 10, and either engage the wire being cut, clamping it against the Walls of such notches, or it the'wire be of small diameter the pins will pass over it and hold it from flying. I.
It will, of course, be understood that one or more pins may be used as desired. Either one or both pairs of notches may be equipped with clamping pins to hold both ends of a cut wire, or only a single pin may be used. If desired the pins 11 may be mounted on a spring base to accommodate large diameter wire. Such construction would permit further movement of the limbs A and B upon their pivot pin 6 after the pins 11 have clamped against the wire. I
It will also be understood that many other nio'dificationsin design and construction of the pliers will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the ,art, and may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the appended claims.

Pliers comprising a pair of limbs pivoted together, each of said limbs comprising a jaw portion, a handle portion, and a disk {oint portion formed between said jaw and iandle portions, said disk portion of each limb being provided; with wire-cutting notches, the notches of each disk being adaptedto aline with the notches of the other disk when the pliers are in open position, pins adapted to reciprocatethrough suitable slots formed in said joint disk portions and communicating with said wire-cutting notches, said pins being adapted to move into and out of said notches to hold the ends of the cut wire.

Pliers comprising a pair of limbs pivoted together, each of said limbs comprising'a jaw portion, a handle portion, and a disk joint port-ion formed intermediate said jaw and handle portions, said disk portion of each limb being provided with 'wire-cutting notches, pins adapted to reciprocate through suit-able slots formed in said disk portions and communicating with said notches, said pins having one end pivotally mounted in the limb opposite that in which operate, and being adapted to move into notches as said pliers are closed to-cut position to thereby hold the cut Wire as said pliers are moved to open position to thereby release Sald wlre.
