SELF-LIGHTER FOR CARBIDE LIGHTS.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that EMANUEL A. Vl ISIN- 'IAINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barnhill, in the county of Tuscarawas and State oi Ohio, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Selt- Lighters "for Carbide Lights, of which the "following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved gas lighter, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a lighter which may be ren'iovably connected with the gas jet and which will light the jet or burner at a predetermined time.
i. further object of my invention is to provide a flint operating mechanism for lighting a gas burner or jet through suitable. mechanism adapted to be connected with an alarm clock.
A. still further object of my invention is to provide a safety mechanism so that in case the flint fails to ignite the burner at the time set for same, the valve in the burner which has been opened under the influence of an alarm clock will be brought to a closed position. An additional object of my invention is to provide means for holding the valve in an open position after the burner has been ignited.
lVith these and other objects in view my invention consists of certain novel combination, construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings in detail, like numerals will be used to designate like parts in the diflerent views.
In Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4t, the numeral 1 1922. Serial No. 555,533.
indicates a platform which is adapted to be supported in any suitable way on a gas pipe 2, the outer end of the pipe 2 being bent upwardly at right angle to same and provided with the usual V-shaped cap or burner 3. Positioned at a suitable point in the gas pipe 2 is a valve 1, having a valve lever 5 secured to the stem of the valve. Mounted on the upper face of the board 1 is an alarm clock of the usual construction designated by the numeral 6. The alarm shalt o'f' the clock 6 is provided with an eX- tension 7 that has one end journaled in a bracket 8 which is also mounted on the upper surface of the board 1, and a winding drum 9 is keyed or fastened in any suitable manner on the shaft 7, the pur pose of which will be better understood as the description proceeds. Positioned in a tube 10 that is supported by means of brackets 1111 carried by the gas pipe 2 just below the burner 3 is a flint 11. a sparker 12 is supported above the flint 1.1 by means of a bracket 13 secured to the sleeve 10. The periphery of the sparker adapted to be held in engagement with the flint 11. A sparker 12 has an arm 14 coming oft from one side of same to which is fastened a coil spring 15 and the opposite end of the coil spring 15 is secured to a winding wire 16, which passes around a. pulley 17 supported by the gas pipe 2, thence around a pulley 18 mounted on the face of the board 1 and then has the free end. of the winding wire or cable fastened to the drum 9.
A second winding wire or cable 19 is made fast at one end to the valve operating lever 5 and the same passes around pulleys 20 and 21 and has the free end of same also made fast to the winding drum 9, thus it will be seen that if the alarm of the clock set to sound at a predetermined time, the
drum 9 will be caused to rotate on a sounding mit the flow of gas in the pipe 2 through the valve 4, I have secured a bracket 22 to the pipe 2 just below the burner 3 and have attached to the bracket 22 a cord 23, which is attached at its opposite end to a sliding weight 24:, the cord 23 running over a cable 25 before being connected to the sliding weight at. It is to be understood that the cord 23 is positioneddirectly over the burner 3, so that upon opening of the valve l and lighting of the burner 3, the cord. will burn thus allowing the weight 2a to drop down and engaging the valve lever 5 to prevent a complete turn of the valve thus shutting off the flow of gas through the pipe.
From the foregoing description of my invention, it will also be seen that in case the burner 8 fails to ignite, that the cord 23 will not he severed, and that the valve lever 5 will make a complete turn. thus shutting off the flow of and preventing anyone sleeping in the room from becoming asphyxiated.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a slightly modified form of invention, wherein the sparker 12 is mounted on a shaft 26 and is formed at one end of the shaft with a clutch 27 and mounted. on the shaft 26 between the sparker 12 and the clutch 2'7 is a coil spring 28. A second clutch member 29 is also positioned on the shaft 26 and the lower end of same, is connected with a lever 30 and the free end of the lever 30 is bent at a right angle as indicated by the numeral 31., the purpose of which will be better understood as the description proceeds. The gas pipe 2 is also provided with a valve 4i as in my preferred form of my invention and connected to the stem of the valve 4t is an approximately L- shaped valve lever 32. A winding wire 33 is connected at one end to the lever as indicated by the numeral 3i and is then con nected to the right angled end 31 of the operating lever 30, then to the opposite end of the lever then around a. pulley 35 carried by the gas pipe 2 and then connected with the winding drum as shown in Fig. 1, thus it will be seen that when the alarm is sounded. that the drum 9 will wind the cable 33 thereon. thus opening the valve at by ineai'is of the lever 32, and at the same time pullii'ig the lever 30 in the form of a circle, thus causing the s iiarker 12 to ignite with. the {lintin the sleeve. 1t) and ting th burner 3. As the winding wire o is only loosely connected to the end of the lever 30 at 31. the spring 28 will. thus cause the sparker the lever 30 to return to its normal position. In this modified form of invention. I have also provided means for holding the valve lever '32 in an open position. by the use of a cord 36 positioned above the burner 3 and attached at one end to a le er 3'7 having a weighted arm. 38. so that when the cord is severed, the weighted arm of the lever 37 will drop downwardly thus engaging the valve lever 32 and holding same in an open position.
In view of the foregoing description of my invention taken in. connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that any further explanation as to the objects of same, operation, etc. are unnecessary.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I realize that various minor changes may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed, therefore, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction shown, nor to the combination and arrangement of parts.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described comprising a base plate, in combination withthe gas pipe and burner, a valve operating lever. a spark making mechanism socured to said pipe, means positioned on the base plate for operating the valve lever and sparking mechanism and means positioned over the burner and connected with means for holding the valve lever in an open position when the burner is ignited.
2. In a device of the character described comprising a base plate, a'gas pipe and burner. a valve operating lever. a spark mechanism supported by the gas pipe adjacent the burner, a winding drum operated by an alarm clock positioned on the base plate, means to connect the valve lever and sparking mechanism with the winding drum for operation upon the sounding of an alarm. and a cord positioned above the burner and supporting a weight at one end adapted to be severed upon lighting of the burner to permit the weighted member to contact and hold the valve lever in an open position.
3. A device of the character described comprising a base plate, a gas pipe and brnfner, an approximately L-shaped val to operating lever, a spark mechanism. a winding cable connecting said operatin lever and valve lever with a winding drum to open the valve and operate the spark mechanism on the sounding of an alarm.

A device of the character described comprising a base plate, a gas pipe and burner. an approximately L-shaped valve operating lever. a. spark making mechanism. a. lever connected to said spark ineclrniisin. a winding wire fastened to one end of said valve lever and loosely connected to the operating lever of the spark making mechanism to operate the lever and spark making mechanism upon sounding of an alarm. and means for returning the spark making mechanism and operating arm to its normal position. b
