STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
.Applicationy ledvAugust 21, 1919. Serial No. 318,942.
To all whom l? may concern Be it known that We, BENJAMIN E. D. STAFFORD and llnnnnnrci; l. LANDGRAF, citi- Zens oi' the United States, and residents oi Pittsburgh, in the county oit Allegheny and State oi? Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useiul improvements in Staybolt Structures; and We do hereby declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact dcscription ot the invention7 such as will enable others Skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. Y
rlhis invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers-one object of the invention being to provide a mounting for the headed outer end of a staybolt which shall be approximately flush at its outer end with the outer :tace et' the boiler sheet; which shall eifectually resist inward pull of the staybolt; which may be quickly applied, and which will eifectually enclose the bolt head and its bearing.
l/Vith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations ot parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view showing` an embodiment of our invention, and Figures 2, 3 and 4 are views illustrating modifications.
1 represents an outer boiler sheet having an opening 2 in which the outer end portion et sleeve or bearing member 3 is mounted.
The sleeve or bearing member may be made slightly conical and ie formed inleriorly7 near its inner endlwith a curved eeat Ll- :tor the rounded. head, 5 ot a etaybolt (3, and the inner end ot' the opening in the sleeve or bearingl member is made flaring to accommodate the swing7 olf the staybolt.
rlhe outer end of the sleeve or bearing; member 3 is made with a flaringv portion 7 which forms an inclined shoulder 8 which rests against an inclined or flaring vvall 9 ol? the opening' 2 in the boiler sheet and the major portion oi said. sleeve or bearing inember projects inwardly beyond the boiler sheet. By mounting the sleeve or bearing member il in the boiler sheet as above described, it Will eiiectually resist or withstand inward pull of the staybolt. The outer end ot' the 'wall oli the sleeve or bearinn' member is formed with two beveled Faces l() and ll and the beveled lace 1U forms, With a portion of the inclined or liarn ing Wall 9 of the opening :2, a groove in lWhich a Weld 12 is located, said weld intenrally uniting the sleeve or bearing; member to tbe boiler sheet. l l
The interior of the sleeve or bearingl inember is formed (near its outer end) With an annular recess 13 forming a shoulder A closure 15, which may be made in the form of a concave convex disk or plate, is disposed at its peripheral portion in the annular recess 13 and is seated on the shoulder lil. The dimensions of' the sleeve or bearing member and the form ot the closure are such that a clearance 16 is formed for the bolt head.
The closure is sealed Within the sleeve or bearing member and integrally united thereto by a Weld 17 between the beveled face 11 oi the latter and the outer face olf' the closure.
lt will be seen that the sleeve or bearing member is secured Within the opening of the boiler sheet by Welding and that said sleeve or bushing' is closed and Sealed by a closure made rigid Within the same by Welding. The bolt head being' permanently sealed 'Within the sleeve or bearing` member7 the bolt should be provided with a tell-tale hole accessible from the inner end of the bolt. Thus, the bolt may be provided with a tell-tale hole 18 extending from the inner end and terminatin at its outer end Within the headed end oi the bolt.
ln the construction. shown in ure 29 a removable closure 19 is empl '72d made in Athe forni olf a threaded. the
interior et' the sleeve or bearingl member be ingA 'threaded as at 2() to receive the same. A gasket 21 may be disposed between the plug or closure 19 and a shoulder 22- formed in the sleeve or bearing member. rlhe outer end of the sleeve is formed -vith an annular enlargement 23, which provides the beveled i'aces 9 and 10.
ln the construction shown in figure 3,) a bearingsleeve or member Q-i-t is employed having its lower or inner portion cuivre(VV as at and the 'upper or outer end portion o'l the sleeve is mounted in the opening in the boiler and Welded to the latter and a reiner able plug or closure is employed as previously explained in connection with the con structionfshown in Figure 2. rEhe portion 2b' o'l' the sleeve shown in Figure El is approxand v3, the removable closure is provided.`
with en angular enlargement 2?' to receive e wrench and the threaded portion in the sleeve to receive said closure may terminate inwardly from the outer end ot the sleeve.
ln Figure Ll, e tapering sleeve or bearing member 28 ie employed and it is thi-milled interiorly et its outer end, esv :it 29 to reeeive a` closureA 30, the outer end et weich approximately flush with the and olf the sleeve and it is mede with an :ingule r recess 8l, to receive e wrench.
When the construction shown iu Fi 2, 3 and i ere employed, in which removable closures are used, the bolt may be mede solid,-viz: without tell-tale hole.
Having fully described our invention., what we Gleim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. The combination with :i boiler sheet provided with en opening` hivinge flaring well portion, of e bearing member provided at its outer end with en annuler enlargement disposed intermediate the surface of vthe sheet, seid enlargement having two beveled portions, one of which is seated on the beveled wall portion of the opening in the boiler sheet, a weld between the other beveled portion of seid enlargement and the beveled well portion of the opening in the boiler sheet, e bolt heed mountedl in seid bearing member, and a closure in the bem'- -ing member. over the bolt heed.
2. In' e steybolt structure, 'the combine.- tion with e boiler sheet provided with an opening having ai Hering wall, of e beering` member having, an inclined shoulder neer one end seated on seid flaring wall, the end of seid bearing member having two oppoeitely beveled faces, a stevbolt having a. heed mounted in seid bearing' member, e closure seated within said bearing member, a. weld between one o1Ll seid beveled 'feces or' the bearing member and the Haring well oi the opening` in the boiler sheet, and e weld between the other ot seid beveled aees and the Closure.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence oi? e witness.
