ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING MACHINES.

Be it known that 1, Louis LIEBMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Sewing Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an attachment for sewing machines and is particularly designed for the purpose of manufacturing waistband linings for trousers.
The invention contemplates an attachment for use in connection with a sewing n'iachine which comprises a means for folding the covering strip and assembling therewith the stifiening strip for presenting the same in assembled relation to the sewing machine mechanism for stitching the same together.
The invention further contemplates and has for an object to provide an attachment of the character described which is adjustable for the accommodation of waistband linings of various widths.
The invention seeks as a further object to produce an attachment of the character set forth which is extremely simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which is highly efiicient in its purpose.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and ar rangements of parts set forth in the following specification, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein, to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed and by variations in the phraseology of the same.
In the, drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of the attachment illustrating the same associated with a sewing machine.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is an end view as observed from the inlet end of the attachment.
Fig. 4 is a similar view as observed from the outlet end of the attachment.
Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the covering and stiffening strips in assembled relation, and the point at which the same are stitched together.
Serial No. 462,833.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, A. designates the table of a sewing machine, B the presser foot, C the needle, and D the feeder plate for advancing the material. The attachment is designated generally by the letter E, and the same comprises a pair of tubular guides 10 and 11 connected together at their inner side edges. The guide 10 is provided respectively with an inlet mouth 12 and an outlet mouth 13, and the guide 11 with an inlet mouth 14 and an outlet mouth 15. The guide 10 is provided with a telescopic section 16 constituting its outer side edge whereby the width of said guide may be adjusted to accommodate material of' various widths. The stationary section of the guide 10 is provided with laterally projecting lugs 17 having upstanding threaded studs 18. The telescopic section 16 of the guide is provided with laterally projecting ears 19 which overlie the lugs 17 and are slotted as at 20 to receive the upstanding threaded studs 18. A binding nut 21 is threaded on each stud 18 for engagement with the ears 19 whereby to lock the telescopic section 16 in its relatively adjusted posit-ions with respect to the stationary section of the guide. The guide 11 is provided with a telescopic section 22 constituting the outer side portion thereof whereby the width of the guide 11 may be varied to accommodate material of various widths. The stationary portion of the guide 11 is provided with a laterally projecting lug 23 and the telescopicsection with the laterally projecting ear 2 1, which is slotted as at 25 to receive the upstanding threaded stud 26 upon which the binding nut 27 is mounted for coacting engagement with the ear 241 to secure the telescopic section 22 in its adjusted relations with respect to the stationary section thereon. The attachment is provided with a depending slotted bracket 28 through which the fastening screws 29 are designed to be passed for associating the device with the sewing machine table A. The guide 10 is fluted as at 30 and the fluted portions thereof are gradually brought closer together from the inlet mouth 12 to the outlet mouth 13 where they are arranged in superposed sinuous relation, as illustrated at 31. The inner side portion of the outlet mouth 15 of the guide-11 is disposed between the lowermost sinuous fold 32 of the guide 10, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4:.
. adjusted to coincide In manfacturing waistband linings for trousers, use is made of a stiffening strip F and a covering strip G, as illustrated in Fig. 5, and in this particular formv of lining it is desirable to face the lower edge of the stiffenin strip with the covering strip by a plait which faced edge constitutes an edge member by which the lining is secured to the trousers. It is also desirable to provide an apron for concealing the attaching member and the stitching employed for securing the attaching member to the trousers, therefore, the plait I is provided which is preferably of a greater width than the plait H. The inner bights of the loops H and I and the free edge of the plait H are secured to the stiffening strip by a line of stitching J which also passes through the out-turned body of the covering strip, the latter being later turned over, as illustrated by the dotted lines, concealing said line of stitching.
In the usual operation of the attachment, the stiffening strip F is fed through the guide 11 from its inlet mouth 14L to its outlet mouth 15, the telescopic section 22 thereof being properly adjusted to coincide with the width of said stiffening strip. Thecovering strip G is fed through the guide 10 from its inlet mouth 12 to its outlet mouth 13, the telescopic section 16 being properly with. the width of said covering strip. As the strips F and G pass through their respective guides the fluted portions 80 of the guide will gradually fold the inner edge of the strip G to arrange the same in superposed plaits or folds, while the inner edge of the stiffening strip will be fed between the lowermost plai't or fold in proper relation to assemble the strips in the path of movement of the needle to receive the line of stitching J. After the strips have been stitched together, as illustrated in Fig. 5, the body of the covering strip G is folded over the stiffening strip F and the waistband lining in strip form is then completed and ready for the trade.
It will thus be seen that an attachment for a sewing machine has been provided which facilitates the manufacturing of waistband linings for trousers which will automatically fold and assemble the elements thereof and present the same in assembled relation to the sewing machine mechanism. The feeder plate D of the machine will accomplish the feeding of the strips of material through the guide after they have been initially presented to the sewing machine mechanism.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1..A. n attachment for sewing machines for the manufacture of waistband linings constituting means for folding, assembling and presenting the elements of said linings to the sewing mechanism of the machine for stitching the same together, comprising a tubular guide through. which a stiffening strip is passed, and a tubular guide through which a covering strip is passed, said latter guide having a fluted inlet end merging into a sinuous outlet end between two of the convolutions of which one of the side edges of the oulet end of the stiffening strip guide is arranged whereby the stiffening strip will be disposed between the folds of the covering strip, as said strips merge from the outlet ends of their guides. a
2. An attachment for sewing machines for folding, assembling and presenting the elements of a waistband lining to the sewing mechanism of a machine for stitching the same together, comprising a tubular guide having a fluted inlet end merging into a sinuous outlet end through which a covering strip is passed for producing overlapped folds at one edge, and a tubular guide through which a stiffening strip is passed,
one side edge of the latter guide being disposed between the convolutions of the sinuous outlet end of the other guide whereby said strips upon emerging from the outlet ends of their respective guides will dispose one side edge of the stiffening strip between the folds of the side edge of lt he covering strip, the said guides each comprising laterally telescopic outer side sections for rendering the same adjustable in width to accommodate strips of various width.
3. A device for facilitating the manufacture of prepared waistband linings for trousers, constituting an attachment for sewing machines for folding, assembling and presenting the elements of a waistband lining to the sewing mechanism of said machines for stitching the same together, comprising a tubular guide through which a covering strip is passed, said guide having an inlet end provided at one side with a fluted portion, and an outlet end provided at one side with a sinuous portion which merges into the fluted portion, and a tubular guide through which a stiffening strip is passed having an inlet end and an outlet end, the outlet end of said latter guide having one side thereof disposed between the convolutions of the sinuous portion of the outlet end of the other guide whereby upon passage of the strips through their respective guides, one edge of the stiffening strip will emerge from the attachment between the folds of the folded edge of the covering strip, as and for the purpose specified.
