Be it known that I, MORTON M. Wait, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton in the county of Lackawanna and State of Fennsylvania, have invented an limprovement in Collars, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in collars and more particularly to the type of collar of the turnover form and soft or unstiffened variety. In this type of collars, as heretofore constructed, it has been customary to weave the material from which the collars are made in strips and to cut the collar entire from the strips of material and then to connect the parts of the collar along the edges thereof by a suitable binding. In this type of collar also the material has been so woven .as to provide a weakened curvilinear line along which the parts of the col lar are folded to give the same a predetermined set to conform to the neck of the wearer; Now the object of my invention is the provision of a collar which is not only woven in one piece to shape but is woven in a folded and set position, and also with the band member and flap member so reinforced as to provide in the collar a means for strengthening the same-and retaining it in position on the neck of the wearer to cause the collar to have the appearance'of the usual type of starched stiff collar.

Referring to the drawing, and particularly to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 6, the collar made in accordance with this invention comprises a band member 10' and a flap member 11. These parts of the collar are woven to shape in a folded and set position in the form indicated in Fig. 2, and. the material is preferably woven solid and in strips so thatthe strips may be out transversely along lines of any desired configuration to form the collars from the strips of material.

The edge of the band member 10 is preferably reinforced as indicated at 13 by crowding the wa'rp's or otherwise in the weavmg, and in the weavin this reinforced 'sec tlon of the band mem or is also provided with spaced lines of threads representing stitches indicated at 1%. This reinforced section of the band member strengthens the same at the points of greatest tension and wear. In a similar manner the edge of the flap member 11 is preferably reinforced as indicated at 15 and provided with rows of threads representing stitches 16. This reinforced section of the flap member assists the parts of the collar in retaining their shape when in use. The line of division between the band member and the flap member is indicated at 17 and the neck band of the collar is preferably reinforced as indicated at 18 to strengthen the same adjacent the fold line. In the weaving the band member 10 may also be provided with a longitudinal reinforced section indicated at 19 to add additional strength to the band member and also to coact with the reinforced edge 13 of the band member to form a channel for a scarf which may be worn with a collar.

The collars as cut from the strips of material made as hereinbefore described may have their end sections turned over and stitched along the lines indicated at 20 and 21, or if desirable these end edges of each collar may be provided with a suitable binder which is secured thereto by these lines of stitches. The collar is furthermore provided with suitable button holes indicated at 22 and 23.

Referring to the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, it will be seen that the end sections 24 of the band and flap members may be woven tubular, and after the strip of material has been out along the transverse lines to form the collars there I from the extremities of these tubular end members as indicated at 26 and 27 may be turned in and connected by suitable stitches. As indicated in Fig. 5 there may be'a line of stitches 28 passing through these inturned ends and also through the outer portions of the fabric, and a second line of stitches 29 pessing only through the enter members ot the tebric ndjecent to the extremities of the interned members so es to form n hose for these interned members to prevent the some from freying or nnreveiing.
