ROBERT R. RETOVVSKY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FO R CLEANING PRIVIES, SINKS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,420, dated October 7, 1873 application filed September 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT RIcRARD RE- TOWSKY, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Privy- Pumps 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The object of this invention is the removal of the contents of privy-boxes by means of a privy-pump, herein described.
Figure 1 represents a perspective and partially interior view of the machine, and Fig. 2 represents an end view of the same.
A is an air-tight tank, having a man-hole, l3, and mounted on ruiming-gear C. D is a discharge-pipe, having a cock, E. F is a detachable hose, having metallic ends, and fastened to the tank by means of a connection, G, having a cock, H. "M is an air-pump, the handle having a horizontal rod, N, running through it, and fastened thereto by means of washers O. The rod extends to the outer edge of the wheels P, where it is bent at right angles, and extends down to the rim of the wheels 1, where it is fastened to the wheel in such a manner that the wheel may revolve and operate the air-pump. On top of the cylinder of the air pump is placed a cap, Q. On top and at one side of the cap is placed a furnace, R, connected with the inside of the cap by means of the tube S. The furnace is to burn the gas as it comes from the tank through the air-pump.
Everything being in readiness, the machine will operate in the following manner: The motion of the running-gear in moving from one place to another causes the air-pump to be worked by means of the rods U. If the (listauce is sufficient, enough air will be removed from the tank to make a partial vacuum. In case the distance is not suflicient, the rods may be disconnected from the wheels, and the airpinnp operated independently by means of the handle V. Sufficient air being removed from the tank, one end of the hose is put in the privy-box, the cock H turned, and the atmospheric pressure forces the contents of the box into the tank A.
The tank may be emptied at the proper time by means of the discharge-pipe D.
hat I claim is 1. A privy'cleaner composed of tank A, with discharge-pipe D and hose F, and three valves and exhaust-pump on the top of the tank, and rods N N, connected to the wheels, as and for the purpose setforth.
2. The combination of the tank, pump, gaschamber, and furnace for hull li lglthe gas, arranged substantially met forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of August, 187 3.
ROBERT Witnesses E. P. WHEELER, BENJAMIN N. MEED.
RICHARD RETOWSKY.
